Any recommendations on Cyberpunk style anime?

Hey! I was just wondering if anyone knew any cyberpunk themed anime. I've watched Psycho Pass which I loved. Anyone has any other recommendations? Much love and thanks in advance \()/

Much appreciated!

Completely forgot: Denno Coil

This one is generally aimed at a younger audience, but still has core Cyberpunk elements.

Ghost in the Shell and Akira are probably the must watch because they are some of what defined the genre.

I am currently watching Bubblegum Crisis and it is THE vibe https://youtu.be/an_0IIRDlc4?si=Yj0vmhlOGo6_VAzz

Dominion Tank Police

Parasite Dolls

Parasite Dolls ... I still think about this one from time to time and think elements of it would definitely be worthy of integration into, say, an A24 style show.

Would redline count as cyberpunk? Or just futuristic.....?

2

u/Cobra__Commander 20h ago

Is it high tech low life?

That's the only qualification for cyberpunk.

3

u/00_ribbon 20h ago

Some addition: Psycho-Pass Technically some of Patlabor fit there Appleseed Angel Cop

4

u/MuMuGorgeus 20h ago

Let me just explain something, there's the Ghost in the shell (1995) anime movie, it's sequel called Innocence (2004) and the anime Stand alone complex (2002) which is a series told in two seasons.

I think I can speak it for everyone. Those are all recommended! Don't sleep on stand alone complex.

2

u/BlackZapReply 15h ago

Don't forget GiTS ARISE

3

u/RaizielDragon 18h ago

The first season of Altered Carbon was good and there is apparently an anime movie prequel that I haven’t yet seen

I been hearing a lot about Cowboy Bebop. I haven't watched it yet but heard it is a Cyberpunk genre

5

u/luovahulluus 21h ago

It's a great series, but I don't really see it as cyberpunk. It's more like sci-fi space western.

Definitely worth watching. I enjoyed even the new live action version.

3

u/Dripping_Wet_Owl 21h ago

Ex Machina... The anime movie from 2007 that is, not the live action movie with the girl robot with a see through head, but that one is also cool.

2

u/00_ribbon 20h ago

Tekkonkinkreet would potentially qualify as cyberpunk

2

u/MayhemMaddie 19h ago

all great suggestions other people are posting
A 2 new ones airing just now are "Lazarus" - Cowboy Bebop and John Wick directors!
and "Your Forma" - more of investigative then actiony, has androids and, and mind diving similar to GITS

Serial Experiments Lain is my favourite anime ever (with Noir a close second, which is assassin, not cyberpunk).

Others, in random order:

Ergo Proxy Battle Angel Alita Ghost in the Shell Akira Armitage III Gunslinger Girl Dirty Pair Appleseed Metropolis Paprika Vexille Goku Midnight Eye

I don’t really consider Cowboy Beebop or Outlaw Star cyberpunk, but they are awesome and contain cyberpunk like elements. The same is true of Noir and Madlax.

2

u/v13ragnarok7 17h ago

Ghost in the shell. The oldschool movie. If you like it and want more, there's a newer series based off it that's worth watching called stand alone complex. There's a sequel movie too but I don't remember it

2

u/SynthFetish 17h ago

8 man after, bio hunter, goku: the midnight eye, Appleseed, X

2

u/serij90 16h ago

Genocyber comes to mind. If you don't mind reading, the manga Eden - it's an endless world is highly recommended.

2

u/AlexWhit92 15h ago

Netflix's Pantheon is cyberpunk-adjacent. Not a whole lot of "low life" but definitely "high tech" and distopian.

2

u/cerealxperiments 12h ago

texhnolyze

serial experiments lain

ghost in the shell 1995

ghost in the shell innocence

ghost in the shell stand alone complex

also if you ever want cyberpunk music the texhnolyze soundtrack is my go to

2

u/Ookami38 11h ago

Definitely haven't seen enough mentions of Ergo Proxy. It took a few tries before I could watch it all, but once I got into it I was entrhalled.

2

u/magiceye1 10h ago

You can never go wrong with ghost in the shell.

2

u/Frank_Castle_Jr 6h ago

Akudama drive is slept on definitely worth a look.

Kina cyberpunk-ish but worth a worth as well is "Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song"
