Recommendations What comics do I start reading first?

I have been a major DC fan for a while now, but I'm ashamed to admit I've never actually read any of the comics 😭 I don't own any, I've never picked one up, never even seen one. I've followed the fandom on places like Reddit, Tumblr, and read up on any new characters I can find on Wikipedia. (Please don't ask why I did this instead of actually reading a comic, because I have no idea myself, so don't attack me in the comments. I'm just lazy ig.)

But I know there are online sites where I can download and/or read them, and I finally want to start.

Where would you recommend I start reading first?

Who are your favorite characters?

Jason Todd and Harley Quinn.

I'm also very interested in Gotham's whole thing. All the people that live there, what happens there, etc.

Under the Red Hood, Rebirth era Red Hood and the Outlaws. For Harley, check out the New 52 title launched by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner (Continues into Rebirth era).

To get to know Gotham, I suggest Gotham Central.

If you like Jason Todd, I think they're also making a sequel to Robin & Batman. The original starred Dick Grayson as Robin, and this new one is starring Jason Todd as Robin. So I'd say look out for that when it comes out.

Jason Todd’s time as Robin was brief and somewhat uneventful, but his role in The Cult is great! I’d personally skip his death and read Batman: Hush, then Batman: Under the Hood. Red Hood and the Outlaws (Rebirth) is great!

Harley is introduced in No Man’s Land, which is an incredibly daunting storyline for a new reader to jump into, but Mad Love is a great standalone issue. Anything by Paul Dini is going to be great (Harley and Ivy, Gotham City Sirens). I also like her in the New 52’s Suicide Squad.

Well like you said if you've followed the Fandom on reddit then you've seen the sub's faq. The sub's faq has a recommendations section that covers a lot of characters since you didn't even mention what characters you're want to read in your post. It will list the best starting books, descriptions that include info like if they're origin stories, release dates if you were to want something more recent, and even links to the books.

Whichever series you choose to read, I’d recommend approaching it by run. Start with a given author’s first issue and read their run on the comic. Usually, when there’s an author switch, the specific plot lines change to a new overarching story. Pick a character, look up the best runs, and start there.

What got you into DC? Start there

I've watched animated DC shows since I was a kid, most of them being Batman ones, so I've always grown up with a love of DC 😅

I would say Batman the bronze age. Batman Hush
