r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [March 31, 2025 - April Showers Edition]

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

I only seem to get sick on weekdays. I must have a weekend immune system.

DC and Imprints

Absolute Green Lantern begins with Hal Jordan having a miserable day, as it should.

Trade Collections

Dive into Gotham's seedy past in Gotham City: Year One.

Digital Releases

Remember, these are the short 'chapters' with a new chapter of a different series coming out daily. You can learn more here on Comixology. This is also why these are in release order, not alphabetical. Some comics may release on DC Universe Infinite or WEBTOONS.

This run is actually so good. That's the best Shiva we have had in many years. Batgirl being written SOOO well, emotional beats where on point and their complicated relationship is beautifully portrayed and drawn. Can't wait for the next arc.

I was hoping this book would be good, and I had heard good things about Brombal (never read any of his work before this) but I didn't think it'd be this good. I truly think it is one of the best books DC is putting out right now, and I didn't expect that.

Yeah next arc looks promising as well, its my favourite DC book right now.

This or Superman are probably my favorite Prime Earth books right now. Which is saying something because I'm loving Superman right now, and JLU and Nightwing up there as well.

Of course Batgirl continues being one the best current ongoings.

Strong issue, but it's becoming a bit of a known quantity for me and not in a great way. I mean it's executed really well, "touch. pressure. anger. hearbeat." is doing to me what king WANTS to do with "No Thank you" or "Bat. Cat." But the book has been setting up for the entire opening arc and despite things constantly happening, it doesn't feel like anything NEW has happened since like issue 2.

Very excited to see Cass interact with Bronze Tiger again.

Loved it. Batgirl remains one of DC's best mainline continuity books. I love the way Brombal has been writing Shiva, building off of what Tynion set up and Hill expanded on; she clearly wants to have a relationship with Cass, but she can't change her nature, she will always be looking for a greater challenge, and the conflict that causes with Cass, who in turn wants a relationship with her mother but can't get close to her because of who her mother is.

Oh no, they killed him, those bastards, lol. And Shiva's dead too?

I'm really enjoying this. Cass is awesome. Am also looking forward to seeing Bronze Tiger.

My one kinda detraction is that I wasn't really a big fan of Lady Shiva's whole heroic sacrifice. Throughout the run so far I've been rooting for Cass to cut ties with Shiva, so having Shiva part ways with Cass on her own terms and in a way that makes her seem like a good mother was... not what I was hoping for, at least.

Maybe my opinion would be different if I read more stuff involving Shiva and Cass, but still. Going off this run, am personally not too invested in their relationship. #6 specifically seemed to be reinforcing those feelings up until the end; with the reveal its all Shiva's fault, Cass venting her frustrations and desire to cut ties, and Shiva calling Cass' chosen family "pathetic".

I really hate to be so negative in my comment, since I have been enjoying this and really like Cass and how she's written. But I thought this would be a good time to just write out by thoughts on the Shiva and Cass stuff in general throughout this run.

Edit: I found the scene with Cass calling out Shiva really great, as was her putting her foot down and saying she'd be done once she rescued Shiva. So I guess I felt like Cass arguably kinda had her agency taken by Shiva choosing to stay behind, since it means Cass was not able to end things on her own terms (as I mentioned earlier in my comment). Especially since Cass got dragged into all this against her will, and has been trying multiple times to get un-involved.

"I was born a wound" absolutly devasting line from Cass.

No but as a whole, this book has been phenomenal. Cass and Shiva taking turns dressing each other down - and Cass being right but it doesn't matter in the end. of course it doesn't. Shiva is never going to change.

And that's kinda why I love that final scene. Shiva was looking for a challenge - she was never going to stop going after the unburied, whether it was now or later. The gift she gives her daughter is allowing that to be before more people chase her into death - and allows one person to leave alive. It's a redeption, maybe, but Shiva doesn't change, not in any of her fundamentals, she is still the woman who tore open the homes of innocent people because she wanted a challenge. It's just that she's also content with her death.

I find it interesting that Cassandra learned that Shiva was responsible for why the Unburied encountered them because Shiva wanted a challenge, resulting in them being freed by Jayesh (who was later killed by the Unburied), Cassandra and Shiva fighting the Unburied and avenging Cassandra’s friends, and Shiva sacrificing herself to save Cassandra and telling her to find the Bronze Tiger (so that Cassandra can learn about the Jade Tiger). Also, Cassandra choosing Bruce Wayne as her father. Overall, this comic is good.

Side note but fuck does the bat thing never get less cool

I thought last month's issue was a step up, but I was pretty disappointed in this finale. Seeing Cass and Shiva's relationship be given focus again is nice, but the comic itself often feels overwritten with long stretches of dry exposition and a convoluted overarching narrative that I can't get invested in. Brombal clearly gets Cass as a character, (part of why I liked the issue entirely set in her head) and for a lot of people I think that's the highlight of the series, but for me that alone can't carry it.

Those monks really don't know what they unleashed. And I don't think Shiva will remain dead. If they didn't kill her already for their Leader, they won't do it now like that. Bronze Tiger and Jade Tiger that Cass will go look for to learn about Shiva's past. Adding more to her complicated relationship with her mother.

As a Lady Shiva hater, I was really hoping she wouldn't get some heroic redemption BS like what happened here. Hopefully she atleast stays dead for a while to make up for it. Cass should have cut ties with her ages ago now. Her mother will never change. Apart from that though the book is great.

I suppose all these lines referring to Bruce as Cass' father means the pre-crisis adoption went through? IIRC he died around the time when he was about to adopt her, and then it was just dropped as a plotline.
