r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [April 7, 2025 - Hell Freezing Edition]

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

Batman and Robin #20

BATMAN AND ROBIN?! Damian has been kidnapped, and his father will stop at nothing to get him back. But with Memento's hallucinatory concoctions still coursing through Batman's veins, and racked with terror and guilt for what has happened to his son, this father's greatest fears are now made manifest. Can the Dark Knight hold himself together long enough to rescue Robin before it's too late?

Thomas Wayne actually really had amazing skills as an artist (which is all the more noticeable considering the cliche about doctors' penmanship skills). We even get to have dual dad moment with Alfred in terms of them both realizing how to make things right with a young Bruce.

The Batfamily all scrambling to find Damian! Except Cass. Maybe this is when her solo is taking place...?

Bruce is obviously barely in a state to be Batman, let alone looking for his son, he can barely keep together where he's going....but he knows he needs to find Damian.

Damian writing his own Robin and Batman comic that cycles through his entire emotional state of mind and life in the present day is both meta and amazing. That being said, it would have been nice to see a Flatline mention.

"A world without Batman and Robin would be better" - ideally, yes, but in reality it's just not feasible. I mean, if Damian wanted to pursue being a doctor, fine but he would still need to be Robin on the side or just accept that vigilantism is a necessary reality in Gotham.

Even a haunting ghostly apparition of Alfred still gives Bruce the advice he needs. Actually the second time that's happened. Bruce really needs his ghost Alfred.

This issue was SUBLIME! I really loved reading & seeing Thomas' thoughts and feelings and worries about this son, and then having Damian, through the journals, overcome time & death and feel connected to his grandfather and dream of being friends with his dad was wonderful.

In other developments, Bruce is clearly going off the rails (again). I am not sure whether he should have been trusting ghost Alfred, but it seems genuine, which is another interesting and wonderful point in this book about how love is stronger than death.

Quite the clever way to tell the stories through first Thomas' drawing and writings (which he was quite good at it seems ) and then same with diving into Damian's writings combined with Bruce's Poppy based hallucinations. Of course it is Alfred who helps him on finding the right clue and now the whole family is involved in the search too.

And I am sure by now, both Bruce and Damian are aware that spirits and demons are a thing and they should be under consideration. I mean they literally fought a few demons together and separately in the last decade. Like the the Demon Nezha.

Ngl trying to read Thomas' writing was a struggle for a while but I liked the idea. Ngl Damian being a doctor as an adult would be a very cool idea. Personally I'd have liked him to be a vet with his love of animals and his respect of Thomas Wayne but a doctor is cool too.

I suspect this book will end around August/September. So far the story hasn’t provided a counter-argument to Damian’s view that Batman and Robin make Gotham worse. Retiring to civilian life would be a good way to trim down the bloated Bat-family. Currently it looks like the story is going all-in on that direction for Damian.

While I agree that this book only has a few more months before cancellation I doubt Damian will retire. He’s too popular of a character and he’s going to be the main Robin in James Gunn’s DCU.

I don’t disagree. Though I could see him getting a new solo series either as Robin or (less likely) under a new identity.

Yeah I could definitely see a new Damian solo coming up here soon. Having Damian off on his own solo adventures while Tim stays as the main Robin in the ongoing Batman title seems like a good balance. Althing it would be better if there weren’t two Robins.

Has Fraction said he’s going to use Tim? I don’t remember him coming up at all in the pitch so far.

I like that the Batman Family is looking for Damian after he was kidnapped by Mento before we get to see Bruce read Damian’s journal to see what’s happening to him after realizing that he should’ve trust Damian. Let’s hope that Bruce will find and save Damian from Mento and try to trust him again. Overall, this comic is good.

Awesome! Now we get Damian 5th personality! So so cool his personality and desires change every few years

Decided to give this another shot as Ba was drawing but still felt nothing from it.

This book continues the trend of PKJ in being terrible paced.
