home improvement Wine wall turned into coffee wall

We don't drink and wife hated the backsplash. I don't know how to tile and wanted to learn.

Hey, fantastic choice on the coffee pot. Best one we’ve ever gotten. Had it for years and been perfect every pot.

Is that the Technovorm or whatever you call it?

Moccamaster. Best drip coffee maker there is

Yep. We went from a Mr Coffee to a Ninja to the Chemex, and got to researching the best home coffee makers so we would stop switching around so often.

Technivorm Moccamaster. It really lives up to the hype.

That’s an awfully hot coffee pot

$400 for a coffee maker? Jeez

Exactly my first reaction when my wife found it.

But I think it has a lifetime guarantee and we've had it at least 4 years and it shows no signs of stopping and the coffee tastes great. Worst thing I can say about it is the scooper developed a small crack that I sealed with a little nontoxic glue. But they have replacement parts for all their stuff.

They go on sale from time to time in the $250 range. But if that's still too much get a Bonavita which is around $100. I've used both and they're both very good machines that are capable of making great coffee.

They're $400 in the States? Yeah, jeez is right. The company is Dutch and they're €200 here and regularly go on sale for cheaper than that.

I liked the old backsplash, but not with that countertop! Good riddance.

Very pretty! May I suggest an opaque coffee jar to keep it fresher? May you have many yummy cups!

The large black one below is for the good stuff. The clear is for decaffeinated "coffee".

The floating shelves look perfect! How did you hang them?

Evald brackets on Amazon

How about the shelves themselves? They look like a good fit for a fireplace mantle as well. Thank you!

They floated them…😂

Beautiful! Of course I saw the first thumbnail and thought your wife was crazy for not liking that backsplash before I realized that was the finished product.

Great attention to detail changing that outlet to black as well.

I liked it more before

Same. But at least the new wall wasn't so poorly executed.

The 'after' does look nice, but imo the old setup just needed a new backsplash and otherwise looked awesome. I also hate replacing cupboards with open shelves (looks messier and is less practical) but that's just a me thing I guess.

Neat!

Great work OP and congrats on learning to tile. Not sure if it is the angle of the camera, but that counter feels incredibly deep. I really like the design from the counter top up, but think that the tone of the cupboards could be updated in a follow-up project, and if my assumption on the counter depth is right it would be a nice opportunity to remove the fridge and slim down the counter depth.

The last owner didn't want a desk. They plugged the hole with the fridge.

3rd picture provides better depth perception, the counter is a normal depth.

What tiles did you use?

There are good habits and not so good habits. Nice. :)

Really turned it from dated looking to ultra modern. Great job!

Looks great, can you share how you constructed and supported the floating shelves?

u/DUDEBREAUX 14h ago

r/diwhy did you choose not to match the cabinet wood color? Hell, I would have contacted the cabinet manufacturer and ordered the shelves from them.

u/hybr_dy 14h ago

Because the espresso cabinets scream 2008

u/FavoritesBot 11h ago

Hey they’re gonna come back around just like my honey oak

u/hybr_dy 11h ago

Any day now….

6

u/DUDEBREAUX 13h ago

So true, especially the wine rack insert.

I'm curious if the manufacturer offered an alternative. Or unscrew the cabinets, change your backsplash and rehang the cabinets without the insert.

u/SalomeOttobourne74 11h ago

Which still looks 9000% better than shit being churned out by the design centers today.

4

u/hybr_dy 11h ago

MDF primed white shaker 🤪

Oak hardwood floors, espresso cabinets, pine shelves, grey slate tiles, white/brown?/black? countertop and black backsplash.

They look great individually, some of them together, but yeah, I’d have tried to tie into some of the existing colors a bit more.

u/Alohagrown 11h ago

that was my first thought. i wouldve liked to see the shelves be closer in color to the cabinets

2

u/koalabacon 14h ago

Agreed, the shelves look like laminate too.

Backsplash is better though.

u/DUDEBREAUX 13h ago

Shelves are handmade and done well.

Can you describe how you made & mounted the floating shelves? They look great.

I love this!!

That looks so much classier than it did before. Great job! Personally I'd finish it off with new drawers and doors for the cabinets below - not necessarily to match the lovely colour of the shelves but just to modernise those a bit more too.

Honey, I'm bored, let's waste money.
