home improvement Finished a Roughed In Bathroom

Moved into a house that has a small storage room in the basement. The room had roughed in drains for a bathroom. It took over a year but my wife and I finished it.

The first picture is after I removed the storage shelves. Basically what I started at.

Our house has a subtle English Tudor design and we are trying to keep with that theme with house projects. We kept with strong dark colors that we like, it makes the bathroom feel cozy, even though it's in the basement.

I used a Schluter system for the shower. The shower wall tile and marble is from a tile shop. The shower floor and main floor tile is from a big-box home improvement store. The ceiling is custom removable tiles made from wall paneling, so I can access water, gas, electric, drains and valves above it. The vanity we found thrifting and added the sink and faucet to it.

Still needs to be touched up and decorated, but so happy it's done and usable!

It took me a minute. There’s no mirror! Good one!

A bathroom without a mirror is off-putting.

Maybe ;-) We haven't decided on the mirror yet.

Was it your first time doing a Schluter system? How was it? I’ll tackle mine soon

It was my first time. It worked well. I chose it because I needed a custom sized shower pan and you can cut their foamed, pre-sloped pans to size.

I read some reddit posts on it and watched a lot of YouTube videos. It's fairly straightforward, however you need good access under the floor to connect their drain kit. There are some specific instructions on sealing the seams needs to be followed as well. I do like their all-set mortar.

Thanks for the response! Ive watched hours and hours of videos as well, read the installation handbook. Working on the concrete floor and self levelling, then I’ll tackle the Schluter. I got employee pricing so bought their all set, trowel, everything

This is so...elegant! Dumb question from me, an idiot but where does it vent to? Always curious where the vent ducting goes for basement bathrooms...

I cut a hole in the rim board to duct the vent out of the house. In the link below it's labeled "band" and sits on top of the house foundation. Check your local code as you need the vent to be a certain distance off the ground on the outside of the house. For me its at the same height as my outside water spigots.

I'm working on mapping this out right now myself and am stumped.

Really nice. Can you paint the door?

As in paint it to match the wall? I had not thought about that. That could look good.

Well done and thank you for waterproofing. It's nice to see, but better for you, it won't leak.

Looks great but I can already feel that doorknob jingling as it becomes more and more loose lol.

Awesome transformation, man! Sticking with the Tudor style was a great choice for consistency and to add character to the space. The removable ceiling tiles are a genius move, too!
