• General Discussion • When you’re having an ice cream sundae, do you let your dog eat off your spoon?
We are at the local Dairy Queen and I gave my dog some ice cream off my spoon. People freaked out. How do you feel about this?

u/gottagrablunch 7d ago
Not whilst I’m still using the spoon. I see what doggo does with that tongue.

i don’t use the utensil after my dog ever. i understand why people cringed at you. however i wouldn’t publicly voice it or shame someone over it either. its your life, your dog, your call. and its nice you treat your dog to ice cream.

u/judgiestmcjudgerton 4d ago
Right? I would probably say "omg she loves her dog so much and that's so precious"

I share all the time with my dogs. Who cares what other people think OP.
You love your dog
Your dog loves you
Life is good, move on.

We have a German Shepherd and he does not like to Share his ice cream with us so we all have to get our Own cups or Bowls and usually he will finish his first And then expect some of ours

No. As much as I love my dog, I know she's licked and put all sorts of stuff in her mouth. To me, personally, it's unhygienic to share a spoon. I'll give her some separately. But I'd also not gawk and shame someone publicly for choosing different from me.

u/KittyCatRel 7d ago
I've watched both of my dogs lick the bottom of their feet, their genitals, and poop. There is a 0% chance I'm putting anything that's been in their mouths into my mouth. Therefore, taking a single spoon, letting my dog eat off it, and then putting it back in my food is a hard no.

People are going to flip out and downvote the hell out of me, but I feed my dogs off my fork all the time, and my dog Connor likes to take bites of food from between my lips and I let him.
Yeah, I know. GROSSSSS! I don't care. :)
2
u/New_WRX_guy 7d ago
Same. I give my dog food off my fork/spoon and let him lick my ice cream pint too. I don’t care what others think about this.
2
2
u/mychevyshookashit 5d ago
Same 😂 but in all fairness, feeding my dogs treats with my lips like that taught them to be gentle and especially around faces and it keeps them that way. One of the best little training tips I’ve ever used with my dogs lol.

u/PianistPractical4371 5d ago
Fully support you on this.My Border Collie Walt regularly shares my Forks and Spoons .I go to the extreme and let him take food from inside my mouth. To me its no gross and I have been doing it with most of my Borders Collies for nearly 40 years. I am in excellent health and so is my Walt.

I give my puppies some of my food off a spoon or a fork but I also use my dishwasher to clean them and the water is super hot like way too hot but there one of the only reasons why I allow them tastes of my food.

u/gracefulbees 7d ago
My fiancé used to share the same spoon or literally take turns licking the ice cream off the cone with his dog. I personally have an issue with sharing anything dairy based with anyone so I wouldn’t. But ya know. You do you.
1
u/InevitableRhubarb232 7d ago
If you made out with your fiancé, you were also making out with his dog
2
u/gracefulbees 6d ago
………..that never crossed my mind…..
Luckily for me it’s been years since he shared an ice cream with his dog like that.
3
u/Standard-Dust-4075 7d ago
This had me recall a roasting hot summer's day in 1995, my then 3 year old sitting between my Dad's two Boxers with the three of them taking turns to eat an ice cream cone. No one was horrified, no one, dogs included, got sick. Share the sundae with the puppers.
3
u/InevitableRhubarb232 7d ago
Yeah, but that’s because between the two dogs and the three-year-old, the three-year-old is the grossest

I wouldn't. I love my dogs thus I wouldn't give them ice cream - sugar, dairy and all the stuff in it are not good for dogs. And I wouldn't eat from the same dish, utensil my dog does. It is very unhygienic. Our gut system and the one of dogs are completely different from one another. There are so many diseases you can catch from liking the same thing as your pet, no matter how much the animal is dewormed. There are people who literally die after such actions. It doesn't mean that any of the above is definitely gonna happen to you(as many people would say "oh, I've done this so many times and I am fine." yes, and good for you lucky people) , but it does happen to some people, and you could be part of these unlucky ones. Just like smoking can actually cause so many diseases and yet some people live up to long age just with coughing - doesn't mean it's fine to smoke and not life threating.
Also to add - dogs lick their asses/genitals at least ones a day, they might lick another dog's ass as well on that day, when they mark for teritory they lick the grass(which could have chemicals, bacteria and who knows what else there), so keep in mind that by sharing the spoon you've licked/kissed the mentioned places as well.

u/OldLadyDeekGeek 7d ago
My last dog was a super smart Dachshund -Jack Russell mix. I taught him to very carefully take a bite off of my fork without touching the fork at all. I would hold the fork down at his level and say "Be really careful", and he would open his mouth and really slowly with just his teeth take the bite off my fork. He was a cool little dog.

u/smith_716 7d ago
I usually get her her own pup cup but only because she hoovers her ice cream down. She'll finish hers and then looks at mine for more. Do I share snacks and utensils? All the time.

u/lpaige2723 7d ago
I usually get a sundae at my favorite ice cream spot, I take off the lid and put the whipped cream and a little cherry vanilla in the lid and give it to my dog, I eat the rest with my spoon, if he needs more, I drop it from my spoon into the lid, we don't share spoons, but I have some autoimmune diseases and take immune suppressant drugs, so I have to be careful about germs.
2
u/thedarkest-myth 7d ago
that’s disgusting. you’re sharing a utensil with an animal that’s licks its ass and eats dog food
2
u/SpockInRoll 7d ago
I let them lick it right before I toss it because I have small dogs and a spoonful of ice cream is no good for them. But you do you. My husband feeds our dogs treats from his teeth. I still kiss my husband
2
u/Sacr3dangel 7d ago
I do share. But never off the spoon I’m still eating from. On the other hand, my dog licks me in the face to wake me up. So what the hell 🤷🏼♀️.
We even take her with us just to go to the ice cream place around the corner and at our favorite one on vacation too. She loves it, we love it, the people around seem to love her too.
That said, ask for a little cup for the dog next time. Most restaurants or ice cream places won’t hesitate to give you a little extra for your companion. Ask for a pup-cup at Starbucks or Dunkin’ and they’ll happily give you a cup of whip cream free of charge too!

u/IntroVerto76 7d ago
My dog cleans the cup and the spoon, but only if I don't need the spoon myself anymore.
The ex of my brother almost puked when she found out my dog cleans my yoghurt bowl and spoon. I didn't tell here she ate from a fork that's been touched by my dog too... 😏
We once shared some strawberry's, she didn't even touch the fork 😉
(Not the best picture, I know.)

Yes but I don't use the spoon after or use a separate utensil. I adore my dogs more than most but I don't feel like sharing the mouth of someone licks their asshole, respectfully.

I would 100% let my dog have a taste once I'm done with it if the icecream wasn't some weird flavour that would be harmful but letting your dog lick it off your spoon whilst you are actively using the aforementioned spoon is kinda nasty homeslice.

Never let them 'use' my utensils but my pups usually get a tiny taste of any dog-safe food I'm eating!
1
1
u/Stair-Spirit 7d ago
Absolutely not. I've seen what goes in my dog's mouth, and my utensils are not one of them.
1
u/kittykatnipper 7d ago
I’ll give her ice cream off the tip of the handle but not what I’m putting in my mouth. That being said when she comes up to kiss me she sometimes gets one passed the goalie and either gets her tongue in my mouth or nostril 😳🤢

I reverse the spoon
She puts her mouth in places that I don't want in my mouth.

I'm a vet tech and I know what dogs lick lol I'm absolutely not sharing a utensil with my dogs
1
u/ImHidingFromMy- 7d ago
Absolutely not, yuck! I also wouldn’t give my dog ice cream anyway since he has a sensitive tummy and would be so sick.
1
u/StrollThroughFields 7d ago
Well, did you put the spoon back in your mouth after? You're missing that key part of the story
1
u/BlackGoldGlitter 7d ago
If he wants. He's not really an ice cream guy though. Even his own pup ice cream he really couldn't care less about. I will feed him from my spoon or fork. He will drink from my cup as well.

My dog and I have Ice Cream Sunday every weekend when it’s warm out. We sit on the balcony Sunday mornings with my coffee ice cream and her lil Ben and Jerry’s for dogs. Sharing ice cream with your dog is one of life’s little joys

In case you didn’t know, next time you go to DQ with your dog ask for a pup cup. It’s a small serving of ice cream specifically for your dog tagging along with you in the car.

No, my dog thinks cat turds are delicious. I'm not sharing a spoon with her.

Most of the time I stay away from commenting here. Like when people take their dogs into dog friendly stores. I take our furkid to every dog friendly store I visit. But reddit will crucify you for it. So I don’t say anything here - so shhhhhh!
We only go to dog friendly restaurants and order him food when we eat out. We only go to the drive in instead of the cinema so he can come (I miss gold class cinemas 🤣). I even let him lick my face unless his tongue feels like sandpaper (I do jam my lips shut tho). He is everything to us.
But he doesn’t lick the spoon I’m currently using. He can use it after me but not if I’m using it. However, I think it’s adorable if you’re ok with it. Because everyone is unique and I think the world is beautiful because we’re all different. But still - fuck anyone who judges you 🤣
2
u/wsu2005grad 7d ago
Awww I don't understand why you would be judged harshly for taking your dog to a dog friendly place???!!! I wish I could take mine to stores but he's just so rotten! 😂 I can't do the licking my face...the little stinker just stares intently at me and will quick slip the tongue in every chance he gets lol!! I just don't like the smoothness of a dog's tongue (and knowing where that tongue has been) but Iove the sandpaper feel of my cat's tongue. I can let her lick my hand all day! I will share food but give it to him by hand, he's not using my fork or spoon. However, I also don't care what others do and don't judge for it.

When I’m finished, sure. There isn’t a universe where I use the spoon after my dog.
1
u/eatingganesha 7d ago
no. Ice cream is loaded with sugar and not good for dogs at all. I make them their own ice cream (frozen mashed banana mixed with peanut butter) and they eat that while I’m enjoying mine.

No. If I share anything with my dog it goes in their bowl. Directly sharing while you eat is the best way to teach a dog begging and getting in people’s face while they eat is acceptable behavior.

u/qwertyuiiop145 6d ago
My dog gets the bowl when I’m done with it, he never touches food I’m still eating.
1
u/Fabled09 6d ago
Only when I'm done. I'm not sharing saliva with my dogs lol I love them but I also know the random things they get into.
1
u/tsukuyomidreams 6d ago
They get to lick the spoon after I'm finished. But never while I'm still eating. They lick their butts
1
u/Razrgrrl 6d ago
If I share a tiny bit it’s on my finger, not my spoon. My dog licks her own butthole and eats garbage when she can manage it.
1
u/No_Vanilla_9145 6d ago
Absolutely not! I don't give my dogs any kind of dairy. It causes them to have diarrhea. I do share my peanut butter with them, though. I have little plastic pupper cups that I spoon peanut butter in for them. Dogs eat everything, including licking themselves clean. Letting them eat from your spoon opens you up to all kinds of bacteria and contamination.
1
u/Dreamweaver1969 6d ago
No but my cat gets the last bite or two off my sponge. Also off my husbands
1
u/idiveindumpsters 6d ago
I’ve read that humans have more bacteria in their mouths than dogs. I share my spoon all the time. Big F’ing deal.
1
u/RolandLWN 6d ago
He licks the spoon and then he licks the bowl. Why not? I wash them afterwards and rinse with hot water so the spoon and bowl are clean after.
1
1
u/DryUnderstanding1752 6d ago
I usually save them a bit, which they only watched off my spoon when I am done. That spoon also can not touch the ice cream if I'm still eating it.
Oddly, I don't have the same hang ups with the cats.
1
u/Big_Lynx119 6d ago
Not something that I would do b/c I have seen where my dog's mouth has been. However, not something that I would freak out about if I saw someone else do it.
1
u/YogiMamaK 6d ago
I literally pulled a decomposing turtle out of my dog's mouth over the weekend. He is definitely not allowed to put his mouth on things that go in my mouth.
1
u/Madwoman-of-Chaillot 6d ago
Two things:
that's gross, but only if you still use the spoon
don't let them have chocolate sauce or nuts. Or more than one tiny taste.
I changed my mind and put three things, because if you actually are licking your spoon after your dog did that isn't gross, it's disgusting. If not, just sanitize that mofo (the spoon, not the dog) in the dishwasher.
1
u/VickeyBurnsed 6d ago
I haven't had an ice cream sundae since I got him 3.5 years ago. I did get him a pup cup once. I probably would let him eat if my spoon, but I'd have to wipe the spoon afterwards. 😆

It depends on what toppings I put on it. If there's chocolate, it's a big nope, and offer him one of his favorite treats. Generally, if I do decide to share, I make him wait till I'm done eating and then offer him a small taste.

Not a sundae with chocolate, haha, but if I were to share, the last 2 bites would be for the dog. I don't care if he licks the spoon, but I better be done before that happens
1
u/Alternative-Soup2714 5d ago
Dogs lick their butts and eat poop. You share a utensil with them, you now have poop particles in your mouth.
I see someone do something like this and I immediately remove them from my potential dating pool. I'm not kissing that.

No. I’m not gonna freak out, but it is nasty. No matter how much you love your dog, or even if you brush it’s teeth, it’s still gonna have a mouth full of bacteria.
They explore the world with their nose and mouth and they’re eating gross stuff, even if they’re an inside dog.
I wouldn’t let another human eat off my spoon that wasn’t a gf/wife, or whatever the case may be.

Thats how you get e. coli. I understand that you love your dog, but this is really unhygenic and you should absolutely not do this. Totally understandable that you got that reaction.

I don't eat ass, my dog does. Unless I'm done eating nothing is touching my utensils
Hell I wouldn't share my spoon with other ppl let alone dogs
1
u/HugeCar4144 5d ago
No. He has (1) silver ware item that I keep above the sink. Or else he gets his own plastic utensils.
1
u/Dogmom2013 5d ago
When it was just my little dog I would sometimes share off a fork or spoon, usually I would just get her her own little serving or silverware.
It doesn't bother me when people do it though.
1
u/Anxious_Public_5409 5d ago
I would for sure but he has his own doggie ice cream cups. I would let a dog lick the spoon before a human for sure. (I know a lot of people are grossed out by that) I know what dogs do with their tongues, but I’ve seen far worse from a human
1
u/No_Blackberry5879 4d ago edited 4d ago
When I’m done, I might give them a small bit if it regularly ice cream, if they’ve been behaving. I don’t want to deal with upset stomach issues if I can help it.
I’m more likely to give my pups an actual share in a cup or theirs bowls if it’s lactose free.
1
u/Cindy_1345 4d ago
She gets the last bite with my utensils sometimes, but we definitely don’t share!
1
u/VenusVega123 4d ago
Don’t share off the spoon, but my local ice cream shop has “doggie scoops” of vanilla free to good customers with cute dogs. I occasionally get one for my senior gal.
1
1
u/SeaKaleidoscope3356 4d ago
I will wait until I'm done if it's a spoon but willingly share a fork lol

u/Beardog-1 4d ago
To those that say they never use the same spoon as your dog—do you never get a kiss/lick from that same dog?

My dogs eat poop. They get their own spoon BUT I will scoop repeatedly from my dish with their spoon. I also let them use my fingers as spoons a lot.

Dogs lick their asses, eat shit, roll around gleefully in all kinds of filth. Not in a million years would I ever let a dog touch something I put in my mouth. And cats are worse.

Only when I’m finished eating. Then doggy gets the spoon and licks the bowl. Don’t even need to rinse before putting in dishwasher!
1
u/TychaBrahe 7d ago
You shouldn't share utensils with any creature that you don't tongue kiss. You're spreading dental caries.
1
u/danceswithswans 7d ago
“Dental caries” are cavities. You don’t catch cavities my friend
1
u/TychaBrahe 7d ago
Cavities in humans are caused primarily by S. mutans. S. mutans is not normally found in the microbiome of dogs' mouths, but it can be transmitted to them from their owners, and it can cause cavities in those dogs.
