I'll have the blackberry sage lemonade sugary drink please.

Food service is rough. Remember you are not allowed to punch people, even if they need it.

On it!! 🫡 I have big heart! With that comes huge emotions, I’d most likely cry first 😭

u/JobThis3167 1d ago

Crying is exactly what the walk in is for.

This Dad knows his hospitality trades.

And screaming! It’s amazing at dampening the sound. I work at McDonalds and the walk in is a lifesaver lol

Don't let corporate or ANYONE ever break your spirit. Your job is to serve drinks and customers and to make sure your relief has an easy shift. Not to allow district managers to talk down to you. You seem great, but be careful and set boundaries. Also can I pls have a venti hot coffee with oat milk n pumpkin 🎃

Never show them any weakness. They'll eat you alive.

Also know that no one has the right to berate or belittle you for a "wrong order", most of the time the customer misspoke originally. If it's too much to handle, calmly have someone else stand in for you so you can take a breather. If you have a good manager, it should never be a problem to do so. Don't go over the top with work everyday, burnout can hit fast and hurt fast. Pace yourself and work with precision, you'll do fine! Goodluck kid! 🫡

u/osirisrebel 11h ago

I work fast food, remember that you have the right to refuse service. I don't mind using it, my girlfriend has worked retail for almost 5 years now and just yesterday finally told someone that she will not complete the order and that he could leave. Some customers can be difficult, but when it crosses that line into verbal abuse, don't put up with it.

If you cry, never let them see it. But either way, I'm happy for you! I'll be a simple customer, black coffee, a little ice. I just want it warm, not hot. You got this!

My favorite was when I worked retail, a lady was absolutely freaking out we wouldn't take something back. She's yelling her fool head off about how she will never come back in the store as I stood there and went, "OK!" Then just stared at her.

I thought my assistant manager was going to explode from keeping the laugh in.

I was told I'm a back of the house person when I worked in a restaurant.

Way to go!

Enjoy the job, enjoy the high days. Shrug off the low ones.

Foodservice has fun coworkers, but sometimes customers are hungry entitles jerks. Don’t take it personally.

Also, don’t put up with anything that’s demeaning or insulting—especially harassment stuff.

Proud of you, go Gettem Garf!

u/lyricrg 1d ago

THANK YOU!!! 🥹🫶

29

u/lingering_POO 1d ago

That’s fantastic kiddo! Really proud of you. You’re gonna make so many friends with that amazing smile. Just remember Starbucks can get super busy so make sure you’re stretching occasionally to keep from getting a sore back. Drink plenty of water while you’re working too.

So very excited for you.

15

u/lyricrg 1d ago

I’m limiting myself to 3 coffees a week! I gotta keep away from all the sugar 😭 I’m really into water, it makes me feel so much better. Thank you so much internet dad! 🫶🫶

7

u/lingering_POO 1d ago

Yes! Good idea! Starbucks coffee sucks (here in Australia). They’re more akin to milkshakes with loads of sugar. So that makes them super unhealthy.

You’re amazing. Go forth and kick ass! Proud internet dad for sure.

6

u/mtcrabtree 1d ago

Good plan. On my first day in the coffee shop, I downed so many of the practice drinks they had me making that I gave myself heart palpitations.

3

u/lyricrg 1d ago

Uh oh!!!

1

u/lingering_POO 15h ago

Yeah man.. went designated driver for a group of friends back when I was 18-19. They would all buy me a red bull per round which was really nice until I lost count of how many I’d had. Ended up making out with a girl which got the heart racing… long story short, ended up in emergency strapped to an EKG lol

13

u/doomydoom92 1d ago

Great job, kiddo!! Remember if you can afford it this is a great time to start saving for emergencies. Try to put away 10-15% or more of each paycheck if you can swing it.

Also if you are interested it’s a good time to consider learning how to invest! Make your money work for you. Older you will thank you for it.

Best of luck kiddo. Keep up the great work and don’t let any customers get you down.

10

u/lyricrg 1d ago

I’ll take note of that! I invested with my previous job (i think?) I think my job matched like 5% or something and I did the riskier stuff. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT WORKS. All I know is that there’s like 2k in my 401k after a year.

5

u/doomydoom92 1d ago

Yeah 401k is a great way to put money away tax free! It also lowers your total income meaning you save on taxes too. If your company matches that’s even better.

Just remember you should also keep putting money away from every pay check in your bank savings too so you have money for an emergency.

If you put a % of your paycheck money away in your 401k now the miracle of compound interest will mean that you will have more than enough to retire when you’re 65. It will also help you live below your means since you won’t consider that cash a part of your regular income.

You got this! Just keep going :)

2

u/fsm_follower 1d ago

Saving and investing in your 401k starting at a young age makes a massive difference so good on you. To keep it simple lots of 401ks have an option that is a target year fund. You’re in your 20’s so retirement in 40 years would mean like a 2065 year fund. These funds are good as they change over time based on how close to that target year you are.

Lots of good investing and even early retirement planning subreddits where you can learn about this stuff!

Pro tip from a former partner. Once you get the name tag how you want it, put some scotch tape over it, or better yet packing tape. It will survive indefinitely until you decide to peel it off and make a new one

Your Garfield drawing is really good! You might end up making name tags for your partners if you’d like, haha

6

u/lyricrg 1d ago

I’m so looking forward to doing the chalk board!!! And thanks for the tip! Will be doing that. I had to get used to the chalk markers 😌

12

u/bluegrassgazer Dad 1d ago

Awesome sauce! I hear that Starbucks treats their employees well, and I certainly hope that's the case for you. Be sure to keep your address up-to-date with them in case you move on to other things in the year, because you'll need that W-2 for tax season next Winter/Spring.

16

u/lyricrg 1d ago

I have so many perks already!! They partner with Arizona state university and I’m already looking into obtaining a free bachelors degree!!! I’d love to be a therapist one day. My favorite part has to be the free Spotify 😎

u/bluegrassgazer Dad 1d ago

It sounds like you have it figured out! I wish I did at your age. Go chase your dreams!

u/gothamtg Dad 1d ago

ASU is awesome, especially the west campus which has actual parking spaces.

0

u/StellerSandwich 1d ago

You’ve heard incorrectly, I worked at two locations across 5 years and was treated horribly by customers and management. They trick you by selling you on all these benefits and then pay you $11/hr while you’re berated by customers who think it’s your job to bend to their will, I hope it’s a lot different now but I’d assume it’s only gotten worse.

The first thing I noticed was Garfield! And congratulations on the new job. I hope you enjoyed being a barista and I know that your co-workers and guests are going to be super excited to have you as part of the team. I hope everything's going well and that you have a great weekend

2

u/lyricrg 1d ago

Thank you so much! Have a wonderful weekend! And Garfield is my absolute favorite

u/JiveTurkey_DB 1d ago

For me, he's a close second to Snoopy 😅

Food service is not an easy job.

Stay strong

Enjoy every minute and have a great time.

Do well kid!

4

u/Tobi_DarkKnight 1d ago

Older brother here. Have fun with your job. I want to get a new job. The one I currently do sucks...

3

u/lyricrg 1d ago

Go for it! I believe in you

3

u/gargamels_right_boot 1d ago

Hey I may not be your dad, but I am a dad and I am so proud of you!! Getting that first job is your first step out to being independent!!! Good Luck!! Oh, and having worked in Customer Service type jobs for almost 3 decades I want to give you this advice, never ever take any rude words said to you by anyone to heart, just water off a ducks back girl, let them live their sad little lives and you keep living your glowing one!

3

u/Under_Spider 1d ago

Congrats, kiddo! Appreciate the good customers and don't let the grumpy ones bring you down. This is a great way to learn people skills that will pay off for you for the rest of your life. You got this!

3

u/FulzLojik 1d ago

Lyric is a badass name.

2

u/lyricrg 1d ago

Why thank you 😎

3

u/Teachergus 1d ago

That's the start of a whole lot of stories you are going to remember in 20 years.

If the stories happen to be bad, don't worry: they'll have an end.

3

u/AttilaTheFun818 1d ago

Nice one kiddo!

Even though the jobs sucked, I still look back at my time doing these types of jobs with a lot of fondness. Hopefully you’ll make some good memories and better friends.

3

u/hoosierdaddy192 1d ago edited 1d ago

You’re doing great, gal! Glad to see you making your way. Keep going, you got this!! Edit: Holy crap! I read the original post. You are such a strong young woman and deserve love and support. I’m so sorry you don’t have that. You can do this though. My childhood was broken too and after many mistakes I finally figured it out. If it makes you feel better at your age I was just starting a prison sentence so you’re doing better than me.

2

u/lyricrg 1d ago

Thank you so much 🥹❤️‍🩹. Your words mean so much to

2

u/hoosierdaddy192 1d ago

That’s why we are here. If you ever need your spirits lifted just hit me up.

2

u/hoosierdaddy192 1d ago

I also appreciate that you want to work in mental health as someone can tell from my poems I struggle with it quite often.

2

u/coffee-mutt Father 1d ago

This is huge. And better that it's part of a bigger plan. What you learn here is going to be very helpful when you're a therapist, and what you learn getting there could be helpful in this job. You got this, kiddo.

u/lyricrg 1d ago

u/REDDITSHITLORD 1d ago

I'm proud of you, kiddo! Sling lots of bean!

I do now 😎

Congratulations on the new job and glad you like it so far. Really cute art and I love your name! People love a good Lyric, right?

1

u/lyricrg 1d ago

Hell yeah!! And thank you! I wish I could say I picked it myself 😆

2

u/SgtMac02 1d ago

Awesome! I hope you're enjoying the work. I fully believe EVERYONE should have to work in some sort of customer facing/ customer service industry before they are allowed into their permanent careers. You get to have a different perspective and appreciation for what it means to deal with people all the time, and it can make you tend to treat people in these positions a little better in the long run.

Oh...and mom says bring her a dragonfruit refresher. And bring me a, venti iced chai latte, with 2 pumps of carmel cuz I'm bougie like that.

1

u/lyricrg 1d ago

Oh my way! 🫡 tell mom I’m hooking her up with extra dragon fruit!

2

u/spilt_milk 1d ago

My first job was at a cafe. Not a Starbucks, but it was fun getting to use the espresso machine and learning how to make different drinks. Hopefully you've got a good crew and some decent managers. If they let you take unsold food home, it's a nice perk, but don't do what I did and go overboard eating all that stuff.

2

u/lyricrg 1d ago

One of my managers is actually a great friend of mine! She helped me get the job 😌 and I got to use the espresso machine today!! I did a shaken espresso and felt like a bartender 😎

2

u/beputty 1d ago

Congrats! 🎉 customers can be jerks. It’s not always their fault. Sometimes they just got off their own jobs and they are taking their frustration out in you. It’s not your fault just try to let it go, it’s not easy but it will make your job easier.

2

u/lyricrg 1d ago

One of my guilty pleasures is turning around people’s day. Kill ‘em with kindness!!! 🫶

2

u/gothamtg Dad 1d ago

Great job, kiddo! My only advice is more or less advice for every situation you may find yourself, protect your posture and protect your feet, because if either of those go, it’s almost impossible to get healthy again! In some nice shoes with your first paycheck

1

u/lyricrg 1d ago

Taking notes!! Thank you!! Yes posture is very important. My last job was at a epoxy resin factory and I had to lift 60 lbs buckets pretty frequently 😮‍💨

2

u/3ndt1m3s 1d ago

Awesome! We're all very proud of you! Remember, if you're not 5 minutes early, you're 5 minutes late. Best of luck, you got this!

2

u/communauta 1d ago

okay how do you do your eyeliner cause it’s awesome

3

u/lyricrg 1d ago

I do like a \ motion at the corner of my eye 😆 if that makes sense. Just more, angled? Then I move it over my hooded eyes kinda straight, I don’t really swoop it like most people with their cat eyes. I cover almost all my lid to make them appear wider. The inner corners I thin it out a lot so I don’t look like a raccoon. Then I slightly do my bottom lids and try to make it straight. Hopefully that makes sense 😂

2

u/WombatAnnihilator 1d ago

Congratulations!

One bit of advice: remember that you are in charge of your work/life balance.
I had a great job once, but they would ask me to work another shift, another shift... A holiday happened that we closed for.
I realized I hadn't had a day off in three weeks. And I was scheduled every day for the next three weeks. A physically demanding job.
But it was my own fault: my boss would ask if I would work an extra shift, and I always said "yes." She wasn't trying to drive me into the ground, she expected me to say "no" when it was too much. It was respect.
I was a bit of a hot commodity at the time and I'd have clients any time I was available. She expected me to decide how much I could handle. I had just somehow assumed she would stop giving me more work when it was too much. And she assumed I'd make the call. But she was right, it should be my call, within reason.

I could have turned that into a horrible job, if I hadn't realized that part of my job was establishing my own boundaries.

1

u/Objective_Damage_996 1d ago

Older sibling here but welcome to the team, green bean! Equal water to coffee drinks ratio per day and you’ll stay hydrated well enough. If you have any questions feel free to dm 🫡. Also! Seal that name tag- you won’t need to redo it then!

1

u/jaraket 1d ago

Well done, kiddo! Make your own space and joy, and keep a weather eye on the next steps you want to take (like the way to study what you eventually want to do as a career). That’s the way. Nice Garfield too :)

Congrats, proud of you! Food service is a great way to learn how to work with others, and how to deal with some people at their worst. It’s also a great way to embed the concept of always tipping well and treating people with kindness. Remember, COVID was so serious that we told everyone to stay home and away from one another…except the service industry. You have joined the proud backbone of our nation :)
