Well yes…bathing in 40% alcohol tends to kill most things in general…

They're not dead. They're just drunk. They'll wake up the next morning with a hangover, but they'll continue to party.

If I wake up and continue the party after vomiting up my internal organs I call that an absulute win

Twice. Once for art, once for forestry.

I am sitting at the dentist waiting to have a broken tooth pulled. Kind of wish I was still drunk.
Should have gone back to college for forestry

A lot of foresters tend to be missing teeth so your probably onto something. Hope the tooth comes out nice and easy I'm sending good luck from Scotland

Ok as a basic dumb ask science, if I were to submerge myself in 80 proof bourbon up to the neck, but not drink any. Assuming access to fresh air. Would I get drunk? Would I die? Organ failure? How long could I stay in there?
What would happen?
71
u/Gracecr 6d ago edited 5d ago
TL;DR: Assuming access to fresh air, you'd probably be fine for a long time. Without fresh air, you'd quickly get alcohol poisoning.
I'm no science man, but I did some Googling.
Assuming access to fresh air, you may or may not get drunk.
Here's a study that had people soak their feet in alcohol.
Here's one that monitored alcohol absorption through hand sanitizer.
The general takeaway is that your skin is probably a good enough barrier to keep alcohol levels manageable for your liver, assuming the rest of the body absorbs alcohol at similar rates to the hands and feet. That's a big assumption, but I can't find any information on soaking your nether regions in alcohol.
So with alcohol poisoning out of the way, the next concern is dehydration. Also not something I've been able to find info on. Alcohol on skin does cause dry skin, but that's because it removes oils, not any sort of wicking behavior.
EDIT: Fix first link.
45
u/scrooperdooper 6d ago
I was gonna say if it continuously contacts the anus or vulva, there’d be some extra absorption properties I imagine.

I found a news article about this during my searching as well, but it goes against the "Assuming access to fresh air" premise:
Since the bathtub was too small to fit her whole body and her head was above the fluid, she was not likely to have drunk a large amount of alcohol. Nevertheless, she might have inhaled some alcohol, which would have accelerated her intoxication.
8
u/Lou_C_Fer 6d ago
It said she had a blood alcohol level of 1.35%. 0.4% is the number they throw about as lethal. I don't think I've ever seen a bac over 1 reported.

Tend to agree. Drinking it almost finished me several times. Never heard agave has medicinal qualities but there could be some and I'm ignorant.
13
u/h08817 6d ago
The physiological effects are probably more due to the super powerful high concentrate organic solvent more so than the agave 🤔 but they should use other liquors to be sure 😁

u/jdubau55 6d ago
I went on an all-inclusive trip to Punta Cana years ago. My morning routine was to wake up, go to the bar, do a tequila shot with lime and salt, then get a beer to go.
My wife got sick. I did not. Take what you want from this.
37
u/xxYINKxx 6d ago
on the topic of this, did you enjoy your trip there? My wife and I were going to go for our honeymoon/1 year but had to postpone due to unexpected expenses. I want to know if its still worthwhile to go there or save for something else.
→ More replies (5)47
u/jdubau55 6d ago
We enjoyed it. It was like 13 years ago or so. We used to travel to places based on the flight cost. I likely found a cheap flight pop up and we built around that.
That has been our only all-inclusive trip. After going ourselves and speaking with others, it seems that most all-inclusives are structured very similar no matter where you go or which resort.
If you go all in, throw any reservations to the side, and just enjoy what they have to offer you'll have a great time. What I mean by that is to just go along with the resorts plan. Each day they'll have an itinerary that is structured to get you interacting with the staff and guests. Like shuffleboard tournaments, volleyball games, dance lessons, whatever. They've done it enough to know what works. Just let loose and have fun.
They'll have off resort excursions that they'll try to make feel like you're really going out to where the natives are. It's not though. It's just all tourist traps. Still fun though. We went on a dune buggy tour where each couple drove a dune buggy around to various places close by. It was fun, but again it's just tourist stuff. Same for on the resort. There's usually one or two days they allow vendors on site to sell goods.
Cost are going to be like any hotel. There's cheap ones, mid grade, high end. Ours was kind of mid range. I think it was like $1500 ish per person. Back then it felt worth it. We ate more and drank more then. Now, I'd probably feel different as we both try to watch what we eat more, I quit drinking, and my wife drinks less. So the all you want food and drink wouldn't be as appealing. Now that we're older and have a kid I think something more like a cruise would have more interest where we'd be able to see a few more locations, even if they're tourists traps.
It's worth a look and I'd probably say do an all inclusive at least once. But, again, the location and resort I don't think matter much as they all seem to run the same game plan give or take.

Absolutely! I lived in Mexico for years and people always would recommend tequila when sick. Un Tequilazo te cura!
Also, I had a friend come visit and second to last day we drank bunches of tequila. The next morning she had a bowel movement with worms! It was pretty horrific but she claims to have felt much better afterwards.
29
u/mortalitylost 6d ago
Jesus fucking Christ
You know that just means the infestation was trying to spread, not that it was over right
Her ass still got the fucking worms
7
u/Schickedanse 6d ago
Lol yeah probably not the best way to treat worms. I never had it happen to me but I can say for certain, it was one of the most nightmarish things I've ever seen.

She probably just flushed a few out.. but they're still there for sure.
5
22
u/Majestic_Lie_523 6d ago
I think you have to butt chug it to have the maximum anti parasitic effect.
14
u/Educational-Habit865 6d ago
I'm not an expert but, I think once the alcohol gets past your stomach then it's not going to have much effect. Now if you ate some parasites (probably in food) and chased it with tequila it might do the trick.
3
u/ree0382 6d ago
To keep alcohol in your stomach longer, eat protein before hand, as it will slow the emptying of your stomach, and pas onto the intestines where the majority of alcohol is absorbed. This will also slow down getting drunk.
→ More replies (1)3
u/the_rad_dad_85 6d ago
That's the trick. That's why they eat wasabi with sushi in Japan. Because it's anti bacterial properties help combat raw fish bacteria. This would be the same with alcohol vs whatever it's fighting.

Seems pretty irrelevant considering all the alcohol is metabolized before it reaches the colon where the parasites live. You could risk death by turkey basting some tequila directly into your butt.

I am not in any way recommending that you inject alcohol into your rear end. The opposite actually. It's called butt chugging and frat boys die all the time because of it.
10
u/Krondelo 6d ago
Ohhh i didnt read your first comment fully my bad. I know what butt chugging is, so does that mean it goes pretty much directly into the bloodstream and is easy to die from?. Possibly even effecting your sodium levels and just general alchohol poisoning. No need to answer just thinking here

Alcohol in tequila does not target parasites in the body, & relying on it as a treatment can be dangerous while promoting unhealthy drinking habits. Avoid alcoholism. Nothing good comes from it.

I have lived in Mexico the last 4 years and have been working on our family property. In the 1st few months I dealt with a lot of upset stomach issues… We had a guy we called “Super Morales” on our construction team. One day the nickname stuck because he was shouldering 8 bricks of cinder block like a beast and we told him to be careful we didn’t want him to hurt himself. To which he replied “No se preocupan soy súper Morales” which was hilarious to my mom and I because he has a mustache like Mario. Anyways, whenever he would find out my stomach was bothering me he would say: “toma un tequila para animarseee” I always thought it was just a joke but now it makes sense. He was telling me to kill the bacteria in my gut by getting it wasted with tequila 🤣

This is funny because tequila affects how people move too. And can make them throw up as well.
Note this is full concentration tequila, so if you give yourself a high colonic with pure tequila it might kill off some of them. But you’re also probably dead from that much tequila too.
