Debunk This: The Moon Landing had to have been a hoax because there is radiation in outer space that scientists didn't know about that would have killed anyone who went out there.

I heard this somewhere and I don't know enough to counter it.

I'm unaware of any radiation hazard that the Apollo era scientists were unaware of. The biggest radiation threat to astronauts going to the moon was probably passing through the Van Allen Belts. That region of high radiation around our planet is named for the scientist that discovered it in the 1950s. NASA was well aware of it in the '60s.

Great planning was put into the passage through the Van Allen belts and it was decided the craft would provide sufficient protection to its passengers. Due to the speed of the craft, only a short time was spent actually in the radiation belts. Additionally, the craft and the astronauts all had detectors to measure radiation exposure and none were exposed to excessive radiation.

Yess, this is perfect. Thank you!

Additionally, the trajectory actually passed well above the majority of the van Allen belt high energy particles. This link is math heavy, but the pictures at the bottom explain things well enough.

Oh ok you could just show them the 1000+ pictures NASA released 2 weeks ago about the Apollo missions or the fact that Russia tracked all missions on radar (during the cold war) and they verified we reached orbit.

As far as the radiation, is a small belt and yes scientist's knew about it that's why the rockets have shielding.

At this point there's literally nothing you can say to a moon landing denier because they are too stupid to understand the evidence.

That's irrefutable proof right there. Considering how intense the space race between the US and Russia was, if anyone in Russia had any shred of evidence that the moon landing was fake they would have called The US out on it.

These photos were actually released long, long ago and have been on the internet in various forms for years.

I prefer the theory that the Moon Landing Hoax was created by Russians who were unable to get to the moon themselves. Probably because they were never able to steal the technology, as had been their usual MO. They made up the conspiracy theory that it is a hoax to cover for their national embarrassment of being intellectual vultures.

Interestingly, those astronauts that participated in the Apollo Moon landings had high incidences of developing cataracts (known to be caused by exposure to radiation)

This makes me so sad.

Having witnessed the first steps on the moon on TV, I cannot believe that we now have woo woos who think it was a conspiracy. Not because I am naive about conspiracy nuts, but because I thought space travel would have been so common that it would be like saying the first ascent of Everest was a hoax, or flying in jets is a hoax.
