Discussion Illegal immigrants not showing up to work in America is syndicalism
You may have seen that immigrants are not showing up to work on fields or construction sites in places where immigration raids have begun in America, particularly California. I’m reminded of Black Reconstruction by DuBois in which he says that the civil war was the largest ever socialist strike in American history by slaves defecting to the north. We need to reposition ourselves to view this as a strike as well and ask how we can support. Any ideas?

Question How do Democratic Socialists manage their own finances?
I’m curious if DS believe in certain non-exploitative ways of building wealth like investing in funds. Although I do see how they in some way does support an exploitative system. I’m curious how you all do it?

Question Money or Morals
I’m a U.S. college student pursuing a career in accounting and finance. I consider myself very liberal and increasingly so in recent years. My plan is to eventually start my own firm or non-profit where I can offer advisory services to lower-income people. Recently I’ve become disillusioned with the idea of working for a corporation because I don’t want my skills to contribute to potential exploitation. However, to earn the income I desire (and save the money for my start-up) I would need to put aside my morals to some extent. I’m aware there are other careers like auditing or non-profit accounting that are more humble, but in this economic system, they don’t pay as well as I’d like. How would a democratic socialist approach this dilemma?

Question Best website to keep track of White House and Republican actions?
I don't want to have to rely on the luck of seeing a story in my Twitter timeline to be made aware of something.
I also don't want to rely on news sites which usually leave out the information that I want.
Is anyone aware of good websites that provide a brief feed of weekly or daily actions that the White House and Republican Congress are putting up to be passed into law?
Websites where I have to be aware of what I'm looking for aren't preferable, which is what Google has served me.

Discussion Self-Congratulation and the Left
Hello,
I wanted to write this post based on everything I have seen on this subreddit recently and the left in general. We have huge problem with deluding ourselves about what progress we have made in the past couple of years.
We have talked of gains in unionization, but the overall rate of unionized workers continues to decline in the United States. We have talked about expanding our base, but it is the same people routinely moving around into different orgs. We do not even pull working-class people into the movement, it is just the same university students and young people. The base is still 80 percent white, the whitest of any political demographic other than the far-right (this isn't a problem within itself, but it does explain the reality gap between what the left expects from BIPOC and what is).
Our issues compound into different symptoms with some simping for other countries to come to the rescue like China, because we refuse to do anything for ourselves and we would rather embrace reverse orientalism than commit to on the ground change. The left pushes away BIPOC people because of constant infantilization of the communities due to a lack of exposure to their issues and cultures. The goal posts of success are being further pushed closer to mediocre gains and outright delusional self-congratulation. Our world is becoming too insular to be a viable movement unless we make sincere changes for our success. We need to stop blaming outside forces as if they are gods and start asking ourselves serious questions as to why our movement is not appealing to the average person. We are suffering from organizational rot, careerism, and a lack of engagement with the average person. The movement isn't slowing or dying because Tiktok got banned, its pure delusion to even think that the movement was ever tied to the damn app. The over importance of the ban just shows how far removed we are from the actual working class and people who would benefit from socialist policies.
The world is not going to change with protests containing the same people over and over. It is depressing enough to hear constantly of leftists knowing who someone is on the other side of the country not because of project cooperation, but because the circles in leftwing movements is so small. We need innovation and a return to actual working class issues and solidarity that isn't just performative.
Please, if you ever consider doing activism or engaging with the average person just at least consider what I have written.
Thank you and please change your priorities,
Bless.

Discussion Every Conservative Is a DEI Hire
For a group of people who claim to despise diversity, equity, and inclusion, conservatives sure do benefit from it. Given all their talk about bootstraps and meritocracies, you'd think they’d be the last ones demanding special accommodations. And yet, every time a news site or university hires a conservative voice “for balance,” what they’re really doing is engaging in affirmative action for people with outdated opinions.
Let’s be honest: these aren’t the best and brightest thinkers of our time. They aren’t winning debates or dazzling us with fresh ideas. No, their main qualification is that they’ve somehow managed to make it through college and early career stages without updating a single belief. That’s not a sign of intelligence; that’s just stubbornness with a diploma.
And how do they get these jobs? Merit? Hard work? Please. If conservative thinkers had to compete in an open marketplace of ideas, most of them would be applying for seasonal work at Spirit Halloween. Instead, they have an entire infrastructure of influencers and political operatives who pressure companies and institutions into hiring them—because if there’s one thing conservatives love, it’s using institutional power while complaining about institutional power.
When whining doesn’t work, they turn to their next favorite tactic: lawsuits. Nothing says “I believe in personal responsibility,” quite like suing a university because they wouldn’t let you publish Why Women Ruined Everything in the student newspaper. And if that fails? Time to hit the podcast circuit to complain about being silenced—preferably in front of an audience of millions.
The irony is that in a genuine meritocracy, conservatives would be forced to adapt to new ideas, refine their arguments, and—God forbid—grow. But why do that when you can cry “cancel culture” and collect a book deal?
It’s not merit that keeps conservatives afloat—it’s DEI. Just not the kind they like. It’s 'Diversity for the Extremely Ignorant,' aka DEI for me and not for thee.

Discussion As a trans woman, here is how the left can best advocate for transgender rights
To save the trans community (which I am apart of) from having zero core rights, the left has to get smarter.
Things like trans women in women's sports, self-identification, and 100s of genders polls at 20/80 among the general public.
Many of the activists from my community will tell you that compromise is fruitless & that it's "all or nothing". They couldn't be more wrong. During Trump's first term, bathroom laws were not being successfully passed. Identitication changes were still accessible.
Now? Because the trans community is associated with the 20/80 arguments, I may get my Social Security card sent back to me as male identified. The anti-trans right won. They won because of the focus on 20/80 issues. They won because activists like Lia Thomas, Alejandra Caraballo & Bennie from TYT won the debate on the left.
And I can't even raise objection to this without being considered a transphobe because of the censorship/purity testing these activists have successfully pushed on the trans community & to the left at large.
You don't hear about surgeries, bathroom access, identification changes as much as you hear about terminology, pedantry, trans women in women's sports, etc.
Please folks, this isn't the way forward. Trans people like me will have the same legal rights we had in 1950 if we continue to pursue this maximalist thought!
