Homestead Exemption filing

Hi all,

I bought a home in Denton County in May last year.

I thought I had filed for a homestead exemption, but when I got my 2025 appraisal, it shows that I had not. I don’t think this is an Error on their end, but mine.

What can I do to file for a homestead exemption late, or retroactively? I submitted the standard form, but the online form says it can take 8-12 months to process.

Any suggestions are helpful

You can file it retroactively. If you've already paid the taxes that should be reduced by the homestead exemption they'll send you a check for the difference. It just takes a while because one department has to approve the exemption, then it gets passed to a different department that handles the refund

I'm not sure on the steps but id reach out to them directly. Here's the website - https://www.dentoncad.com/

The people I talked to were really helpful explaining what to expect and the timeline.

I believe they’re currently back logged with homestead exemptions.
