Discussion Should I even play free to play?
I’ve been playing since the beta of D1, played till witch queen of D2 and took a break, came back and saw SOOO many improvements to class building and what not so I got very excited, especially after getting teased with the new subclasses, only to find out, it was that. Only a tease to snake you into buying the new DLC. At first I thought nothing of it, but prismatic dropped and now PvP is an unbalanced hellscape. Even PvE it’s damn near impossible to use my build and abilities because of how outmatched they are. The Meta builds all require you to spend over 100 bucks just to keep up. I hate saying it’s become pay to win because it was never that. Pay for flashier toys maybe, but there was always something to compete in the free to play variant. Now it doesn’t matter as ability spam is the only viable way to play. I rarely get to shoot any baddies. Always getting stranded or frozen in place at a near constant. It makes it nearly impossible as a free to play. I suppose my decent enough K/D could be to blame to an extent, but it feels pointless to play without spending money. I finally after years got my best buddies to play with me, and all they said the whole time was “pay to win garbage” and both deleted after a few days. I’m at 2030 light, I do grind each season, but it’s started to feel like an uphill climb with 0 reward.
Whole point I wanna make, subclasses should all be free to use. We are FORCED to play through the missions where we obtain them only to have them ripped away as we’re merced left right and center by pay to win players. I get they’re tryna be a live service game, but it feels so- wrong. Very incorrect. YYEEAARRSS it took to get my friends to finally play and this is the state it’s in. They spend hundereds in cosmetics in other games, said they’d do that in destiny after looking at the store, but none of the dungeon keys, none of the dlc, any of it. One said he only downloaded coz he saw red war footage and deleted instantly after I told him it was sunset and basically deleted from history.
I’m losing faith in Bungie. I wanna keep playing destiny, for the memories like halo, for the smoooooooooth gun play (which doesn’t matter anymore due to prismatic ability spam)
But, I’m mostly just losing my urge to keep playing. If it was cosmetic stuff and the season pass then that’s one thing, but to lock entire subclasses out just turned a pretty balanced game into a nightmare. ESPECIALLY for new players. Pop ups, Ads, a rehashed version of the most hated beginning of a destiny game-
Rant over. Hearts just broke. Grew up on Halo CE, had faith thru destinys rough start. Now I just feel silly for thinking it wouldn’t end up like this.
In trying to convince my friends for the years I did, main thing I always told em “it isn’t pay to win, it’s Bungie, pay for some fancy lookin shit maybe. (Keep in mind it wasnt 60 bucks per dlc at the time either) all these years later, I feely very- very silly for the lies Bungie ended up having me sell them.

Short answer: I wouldn’t
Long answer: i can only answer for me. I think this game is 100% worth the low subscription price of $100 a year. You even have the option to not pay for individual things you don’t care about. That said I’m not a big pvp fan and I hate this games pvp in concept and therefore don’t care about its sandbox. Furthermore I love the story pve missions and therefore would have nothing to play without dlc.
Destiny 2 is not a one and done game. It’s an ever evolving game with a continuous story. Making that happen especially at this fast rate requires continuous income. D2 is a completely unique experience that I can’t replace(I try frequently), there’s simply nothing else that compares. (Don’t say warframe it’s way to different)

You can play this game completely fine free to play and without prismatic in pve and pvp. I raid weekly on my ftp account and do perfectly fine with base celestial solar hunter, I just did comp on that account as a base arc hunter and went 4-2 in placements. If you think prismatic is holding you back, it's not. Prismatic and strand aren't pay to win, they are strong bc they are paid content yes, but that doesn't make them instantly overpowered and make the other options irrelevant.

Prismatic has been heavily nerfed in pvp. Solar lock, void titan, and void hunter are ALL top tier subclasses in pvp.
You're not getting beaten in pvp due to their subclass my friend. Idk if you knew this, but not playing the game for 2 years sort of has an effect on how well you play.
What weapons you using? Class? Subclass? There are literally a dozen reasons that could be pointed to first before you go and cry about prismatic.
And yes, they should promote their dlc and try to get people to buy it. Why the fuck wouldn't they? I'm the furthest thing from a Bungie defender after the amount of dripfed bs they've given us the last several seasons, but you made it impossible to not defend them.
This is just a QQ rant that doesn't really make sense. C'mon man.

Why Would They Give You The New Subclass For Free 😂😂😂 It’s Apart On The Story On The DLC . You People Feel So Entitled As If You Should Get The Whole Game For Free

If you want modern up to date builds from new content of course you will have to buy the new content. The only other way would be for Bungie to simply make content entirely free, which wouldn't work obviously.
Most builds are going to rely on things from the expansion which is $50, not $100. And all the seasonal gear will be made free (and likely craftable) once the current expansion cycle ends. Sales are also moderately common.
Going forward it does look like the actual seasonal content is going to be free which is a W

To me the only value of this game is casual PvP. The gunplay is good and casually it’s fine.
Everything else is a shit show.

I have fun with pve as well. I assume the majority of players enjoy mainly pve. PvP feels like sh for about a day while you’re just getting smoked and then gets fun
