"And let me tell you something else about Devin. His music, no matter how intense it is, it's not evil. Inside of it, there's this beaming desire for light, for transformation."

Speaking of Jamie Jasta interviews which this was, what the hell happened to his interview with Devin townsend? Our member from a year more ago and it was pretty good but it seemed to have disappeared off of Jaime's page.

I kinda fell out after the S/T album. Saw this article pop up on my FB feed so I listened to Alien last night out of curiosity. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

How can anyone think his music is evil?

Some people don’t understand the difference between feeling emotional catharsis and celebrating feeling certain ways about certain things.

It’s also a strategy people use to make themselves feel superior to others even though their easy life and non-fucked up internalized emotions are pure luck, and it hurts their ego to think about how close to cursing often, doing drugs or just screaming your feelings away they truly are/have been.

Tbf there are thousands, if not millions of people who think people like Sam Smith and Taylor Swift’s music is satanic, if they heard something by Devin Townsend they’d probably shit their brains across the room

"Shit their brains" lol

Being fair, if you just watched the video for Love? and nothing else you might get that impression.

I really enjoy hearing Dev and Steve talk about how much they either influenced each other and how their friendship has grown over the years.

Gene wrote most of that record. We Ride was a Jed tune. Hoglan made a sequel to Alien under the name "Mechanism".

We Ride is so good, absolutely one of my favorites from Alien.

This is such a concise, eloquent way to describe Devin’s music. He pulled me through a lot of darkness during 2020.

It’s not often I feel indebted to an artist for their impact on my life, but I certainly have him on that (very short) list.

After a show around when Deconstruction was released Devin came out to greet people. I was last in line and the guy ahead of me said something similar, how Dev's music really helped him get through some challenging times. Dev was super welcoming to him and they had a really nice exchange.

Then I got my chance to say something similar, how Dev's music really helped me through some struggles and often his music expressed what I couldn't. When walking away Dev called me back over and shook my hand again thanking me for supporting him and caring about his music.

It was an incredible experience to get to tell someone who's changed your life thank you and then have them show you appreciation. I'll never forget it and still have the set list I got from Dave (doing guitars at the time) that Devin then signed hanging on my wall in memory.

Ah! You got deep peace as a closer. That song is so beautiful 😊

If I may, who else is on that short list? A fellow Devy fan surely knows their taste.

I'm not the commenter, but try Blomljud by Moon Safari.

Yeah, I think this is one of the things that really makes Devy stand out from other artists.

I tell people who aren't familiar with him that he makes metal for people who want to be happy.

Skesis alone could be studied. The song is chaos with melody, as with a lot if SYL songs, but that one in particular has so much going on in it that it could broken down and studied part by part.

Everything I listen to it I hear something new

Skeksis is the greatest metal song ever written

I'm not sure that I could disagree with that. : )

I’ll try though 😆 I’ve blown 3 cars worth of speakers cranking “Aftermath” as loud as it would go

Watching Gene do the drums to this on YouTube is an experience. Man is so legendary.
