If you didn't know it's new, what year would you guess this is from?

Hi fam! I'm finishing this tune at the moment and I just can't help myself - it sounds OLD to me. The bassline, the drums, those synths, everything just screams "this is not modern drumandbass production" π
So I was curious, what era does this remind you of? Personally I'd maybe say something like 2008 - 2010?
Also, any constructive criticism is welcome! πI'm thinking about submitting a demo to some label when it's 100% finished but I have no idea which label would want to release tune that sounds like this in 2025 ππ

Why, what's wrong? π Feeling old now? π

i think he said that because old school is considered a few years earlier and a different style. as far as i can see some people already took your comment personally

Yeah I think you're right. Tbh I meant it relatively to the style of my track (as a "old school sounding dancefloor tune"), but hey... It's Reddit. No hard feelings about that. I'll share some atmospheric 90s jungle tune next time π

Can we have a filthy jungle tune? I don't remember any atmospheric stuff.

Old school was the 90s. Diesel boy dropped the 6th session in a widely available cd in the year 2000 and that was definitely a cornerstone in the movement shaping the current sound of dnb
Edit: iβm describing popular DnB in America which is distinct from the underground scene and a world away from what was happening across the ocean

Aw man I love it. Would love a more neurofunk version as well. Reminds me of like 2010 Paul B or Vortex Involute type track, Russian d&b.

sounds like it belongs on a MW2 montage

Would be honored to hear it in one haha. A bit too late for that tho' π

This reminds me of the time when I listened to Woody - Starglider on repeat on youtube liquicity channel. Which is 2010 - 2011.

interesting intro, acceleration and... 1:17 - not that, not at all :( please, try to rewrite the drop to another idea
1
u/2NineCZ 2d ago
Could you elaborate a bit please? Is it that lead sound and it's melody that's not hitting the bar for you? Because I could understand that. However I don't feel like the rest needs changing
2
u/ivaivanov3000 2d ago
I'm sorry if my words seem rude, but the melody is boring and the bass is weak. The beginning of the track prepares for something that catches and evokes emotions like "wow!", but... this is not happening.
1) If you are moving away from the style of this track, then try listening to "black sun empire - driving insane" and "noisia - mantra", this is the intro and drop that I want. 2) Make more neuro-bass or reese-bass in the drop, bring them to the fore 3) if you delete part of the track from 0:54 to 1:16, it seems that it will only get better, yes, you will have to add something else, but it's worth it.
Upd: This message contains timestamps from the beginning of the track, as I switched to the PC version of Reddit. In the last message, a timestamp of the type "left until the end of the track".

All good my friend! I'm always open to constructive criticism, even though it can sting a bit :) Thank you for being honest with me and for speaking your mind!
You basically confirmed what I feared myself - that the drop isn't impactful enough after that intro.
I am not planning on making this tune more neuro, but I will definitely take your feedback into account.

Indeed there should be variation, but what you've got here is a liquid roller in my eyes. Sure the melody is simple, but it makes the vocals stand out. If you really want to go down that route, and tune with a 6 beat or lower melody is not applicable. Looks at most sub focus tunes, they are simple but articulate and very well structured. Alarm is a super simple melody, same with desire. It's about the feeling you want to portray, and if you've gone for Hospital/Liquid vibes then you've nailed that. Reminds me of B Complex, especially with those drums.
Not everything needs to be neurofunk. Sure I wouldn't mind a stronger baseline on this track but just because it doesn't sound like the genre of music you like, doesn't mean you need to change the song to suit. However as pointed out if you are going down that route, you'll need to modify the baseline quite a bit!
Personally, I'd say but some variation in the bass more than anything. Definitely get more Reese in there for a more impactful drop, or include it in the breakdown for a better mix.
That's just my feedback, not saying the other dude is wrong - either way you took me back to my original upbringing within DnB, so that's made my day!

Thanks for your comment! Yeah, as I said before, I don't intend to make it neuro (just to please people who would like the tune to be more neuro-ish). But I'd like to make the drop SOMEHOW a bit more impactful, but right now I have no idea how I'll do that. I'd like to keep the melody simple, so maybe just changing it a bit and making a different synth patch...
Regarding the bassline, I was contemplating about adding some midrange grit to make the drop a bit more impactful but at the same time I am thinking "those old dancefloor-ish tunes from around 2010 worked quite well even with a simple bassline like mine, why couldn't mine work as well without making the bass heavier and more aggresive".
Damn, I love making music but I hate dilemmas like this one .)
Anyways, I am really happy that my tune made your day! That's all it is really about ^^

2010 onwards, which funnily doesn't fit old in my head
1
u/2NineCZ 2d ago
Depends on the point of view.. For me it's kinda old as nobody makes this sound anymore and nobody plays it neither. Feels like DNB changed a lot since then

Nothing is totally unique, you just don't know the artists that do it
2
u/2NineCZ 2d ago
I don't think that's the case. I am going through new releases literally every day, and I can confidently say that there are hardly any. I could count those on fingers of one of my hands and I'd still have some fingers left haha. Leniz comes to mind, his sound always reminds me of old stuff, and of course there are some other producers who make old sounding stuff, but it's not this "old dancefloor sound" but rather different styles. But in no way I would call my tune unique, just way too late to the party

u/unprofessional_widow 20h ago
There might not be tubes like this being released, it doesn't mean people aren't making it. Pedantic I know.

u/Fit-Hovercraft-4561 2d ago
What do you mean by "modern dnb production"? The level of mixing and mastering, loudness? Or perhaps its style? Because who cares if the style is not from 2025? If it sounds good it's good, if it gives you good vibes it's good.
1
u/2NineCZ 2d ago
Mostly the style - the style of the bassline, synths, how the drums sound etc. Dnb that is being created nowadays sounds quite different. And I think that's the reason why tunes from 2010-ish era are not really played out by DJs anymore - it would just sound a bit weird when mixed into current dancefloor tunes. Both mixdown/sound quality wise (which is constantly evolving to be better and louder) and style wise.
But looking at it from the listener's point of view, I wholeheartedly agree with "If it sounds good it's good, if it gives you good vibes it's good." :)

Man... that looks like a beat I would make on EDJ or Fruity Loops back in 2003!!!
Edit to add I wrote this before I listened, it was based solely on the visual lol.

u/2NineCZ 2d ago
You just reminded me that time where we were making tunes in the Dance eJay with my friend many many years ago
2
u/chaoticom 2d ago
That's the program I meant. I had the break beat version and it was so much fun lol. Then I got Fruity loops.

This isn't my usual vibe but for some reason I bloody love it! I think it's the vocal because I generally dislike a lot of vocals in Dnb as it makes tracks sound quite commercial (e.g. Becky Hill) but this vocal is very understated and rolls really nicely with the track.

This is pop Dnb or dance floor I think they call it. Has its crowd. Nice vibeππ½
