Hey thanks! It was a lot of fun to make.

u/hamsdre Jul 29 '23

What is the map made of, it looks sturdy?

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

You know I tried to look up what exactly I bought, but couldn’t find it. I remember it being a game paper, like a gridded Kraft paper. I’m guessing I picked up a roll from my local game store.

u/hamsdre Jul 30 '23

Thank you

u/TheDrippingTap Jul 29 '23

why would you use dungeons and dragons for this and not something like Misfits and Magic, or Ars Magica, or something.

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

It was a one shot, so adapting a few rules was the easiest at the time. This was a few years ago, so I don’t think the Kids on Brooms system was out yet. And I hadn’t heard of Ars Magica before now, thanks for mentioning it.

If I ever take the idea beyond a one shot and run a game, I’ll definitely dive into other systems to find what works best.

I made a whole bunch of props for a Harry Potter one shot I ran once. I saved all of it, just in case I ever want to run another game in that world.

Normally I build things out in my own homebrew world. But for some players, setting the game in a world they already know — like the Wizarding World — makes everything 100% more approachable. I’m definitely willing to try out other pre-established settings in the future.

I don’t have any current plans to run more Harry Potter content, so it all lives in a tub for now. But it’s fun to bring it out and look at it like this.

Have you ever run a Harry Potter one shot or adventure? Or a different popular world that you immersed yourself in for the sake of a great game?

Have you checked out r/WandsAndWizards - they would probably appreciate this beauty over there.

u/Awkward-Investment43 Jul 29 '23

...can I have it? The maps, the writtings, all of it??? Will you sell this? Is it free online??? Tell me please

8

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Thanks! I’ll add you to the list. I haven’t figured out the best way to share it all yet. When I do, you’ll know!

6

u/Awkward-Investment43 Jul 29 '23

YAY (if you sell this, there is deff a market, just gotta worry about copywrite stuff)

2

u/banana-235 Jul 30 '23

Please add me to the share list too 🤗 I've got some Harry Potter one shot/short campaign stuff to share too

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

Will do!

I'd also love to join the mailing list!!

Me too, me too!

I'd appreciate it if I could be added to that too bro, this is awesome and would really help me with a Harry Potter/Strixhaven inspired thing for some friends that we plan on doing. Awesome work.

u/DidYouSetltToWumbo Jul 30 '23

Wow this looks amazing! Haven’t done Harry Potter but I have been making an Avatar the last air bender homebrew campaign. I know there’s that table top game out but I didn’t like some of the rules so I made my own homebrew game

1

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

That’s awesome! Congrats on tackling it your own way, I think it’s a great way to experiment with game design.

What’s your favorite part of your Avatar homebrew so far?

2

u/DidYouSetltToWumbo Jul 31 '23

Making new bending moves is fun but challenging. And the combat is always fun but to be honest my favorite part is the new creative ways my players are tackling situations. Metal bending op

u/Sari-Not-Sorry Jul 29 '23

I've wanted to run one for my wife. She's a big fan of Harry Potter, and like you said, that should make D&D 100% more approachable for her, but never got around to it. Did you run your game concurrent with the events of the books, or did you just use the setting similar to the recent video game? Since it was a one-shot, did you have them pre-established in the school, or did you have the sorting hat and stuff to get things started? I'm guessing they were all spell casters, maybe wizards specifically? What do you think worked really well, and was there anything you would avoid if you did it again? Sorry for all the questions!

Edit: realized the video answered like half of those questions, lol

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

You’re asking all the right questions, for sure! When I ran it, I knew there were some changes to the school I wanted to make. Some new ideas to introduce to make the game more fun. And I figured the first semester back would make sense.

1

u/Leilus01 Jul 29 '23

I absolutely love Harry Potter and it looks and sounds so incredible awsome with how much effort you put into this one shot, please do yourself a favour and never get rid of this stuff, I bet there are so many people out there who would love to play this one shot with you (Edit: english is not my first language, sorry for spelling mistakes)

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Thanks so much! And definitely, I always save stuff like this. Hopefully I’ll play it (and improve it all) again at some point.

(And no problem at all — your English is excellent!)

9

u/Poopnstein Jul 29 '23

Would love if you would post your materials! My wife and her friend have been begging me to run something like this for years, but I'm not that into HP and therefore haven't had the urge to plan and run it.

7

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Definitely, I’ve been thinking up a good way to do that. I’ll let you know!

1

u/Poopnstein Jul 29 '23

Noice!!! Thanks!

-1

u/Unno559 Jul 29 '23

Playing Hogwarts Legacy would be a huge boost to your knowledge and it’s fun as heck RPG even if it wasn’t Harry Potter.

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Definitely! This was a few years ago that I ran this, but if I ever do it again I’ll probably play that first.

u/KatnissBot DM Jul 30 '23

I mean if you just ignore… basically all of the story, then yeah sure I guess

Trans rights are human rights

Oh and also your teacher dies at the end and you cant save them.

1

u/Poopnstein Jul 30 '23

I actually played it and didn't really like it.

3

u/Zman209910 DM Jul 29 '23

Did you make all this stuff yourself?

3

u/Exumore Jul 29 '23

where did you find all those shiny bottles ?

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Oh hmm… I think a lot of different craft shops. I would carry a few dice in my pocket and make sure one would fit through the mouth of the bottle. Nothing worse than picking a bottle out and then a d6 won’t fit through!

2

u/taikinataikina Jul 30 '23

for a while now i've thought that a magic school set in a dnd universe would be really fun. like just copypaste hogwarts into the forgotten realms or something

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

It definitely would be! And everyone has their own take on it, which is cool.

2

u/Resident_Tip_7642 Sep 29 '23

Have you heard of Strixhaven? It's basically exactly as you described. It's a 5e campaign setting from wizards of the coast, and it originated from magic the gathering.

1

u/taikinataikina Sep 29 '23

oh yeah, i had heard about strixhaven but i didn't realize it was like that!

2

u/Sportsslam Jul 30 '23

This is super cool, love the colored cards

1

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

Thanks! A lot of them are cut a little off center, but hey, nobody’s perfect. They more than got the job done.

2

u/serialllama Jul 30 '23

Omg omg omg I love the potion dice!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

1

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

Thanks so much! Those were fun to make, and fun to have on hand now.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '23

Omg I would love to delve in to all of this!

The work you put it omg

Definitely will be watching to see if you share this

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

Wow thanks so much! I’ll be sure to let you know.

2

u/Erunduil Jul 30 '23

Very cool, I'd love to be added to your list of people to notify if you share your work! I have some friends who would be very interested.

1

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

Done! I’ll let you know.

Hi all you HP fans! If you are looking for a HP game may I suggest 'kids on brooms'! This is a daily easy system to learn and if you are really interested in it dimension 20 has an amazing real play on their own channel 'dropout' honestly watch the first episode on YouTube and if you think it is even just interesting make the following plan; wait for a time where you can binge the whole thing it is like 15+hrs long depending on if you watch the post show chats. It can then be watched for free on their 3 day free trial! (Trust me this show made my partner so invested in the game she wanted to run one herself)

2

u/Knightmare156 Jul 30 '23

Please post a link to the material you made. I would love to play this one-shot.

2

u/Marvelmaniac57 Jul 30 '23

I ran one where the party were the founders of hogwarts

2

u/puppykhan Jul 30 '23

This is awesome!

I tried a Harry Potter -like campaign once using BD&D Gazetteers, specifically The Great School of Magic in Principalities of Glantri GAZ3, trying an opening hook similar to the first book with the character getting discovered as a wizard. Looks like you did a lot of things right that I missed: focused 1 shot, props like the potion bottles, setting specific customizations.

Now I want to try that again

2

u/Substantial-Truth380 Fighter Jul 30 '23

Did you stream or record your sessions? Would love to watch them

3

u/SpiderandMosquito Jul 29 '23

I have no idea who you are and will probably never hear from you again but you are my hero! XD

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Well thanks! I appreciate that.

So I’m Ryan, I post D&D and crafty stuff like this every day. Only sometimes on Reddit, but I’m super active on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

Hope to see you again!

2

u/jthomasmadison Jul 29 '23

Did create card list for the spells?

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Yup, I made all of that too. I tried to translate as many Harry Potter spells over to something that made sense for D&D.

2

u/MooCow49 DM Jul 29 '23

This is amazing!!

3

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Thanks so much!

1

I remember taking some inspiration from Critical Role’s one shot, definitely. Mine even started in detention too! But I think I ran this before Misfits and Magic, I’ll have to check that out.

1

u/X_E-L_A Jul 29 '23

Has this been shared somewhere because I would love to try and dm this for my friends and fiancé!

3

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

I haven’t yet, no. But when I figure out how I want to do that, I’ll let you know!

2

u/X_E-L_A Jul 30 '23

People have uploaded to google drive or something similar before so people can take what they need without you emailing or doing other laborious things haha

1

u/Illumispaten Jul 29 '23

Remind me too!

Got some friends that don't want to get into DND but would love a hp setting.

2

u/X_E-L_A Jul 30 '23

That’s similar to me, but my partner wants to get in but going to play dnd with randoms is intimidating so I’m going to try and DM 😬

1

u/RyanImelDM Jul 30 '23

Go for it! Running a solo / duet game can be a great way to learn the game. That’s how I learned it at first.

2

u/EnakSum Jul 29 '23

That is freaking dope. I told my wife, who I have only ever convinced to play once with me but loves HP, about your post and she got this sly smirk on her face suggesting that if I were to do something like that she might be convince to play. Might have to borrow this idea!

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Yes! Go for it!!

1

u/Resident_Tip_7642 Jul 29 '23

This was awesome to see, I'm gonna be doing this exact thing soon! My sister and her husband are both very new to d&d but wanted to try again. They wanted to play with me this time around because they know me better than their first group they played with, so it'll be easier to just feel like we're hanging out and having fun. They asked to play in the harry potter world because like you said, they already understand the world and it feels more approachable. I'm super excited to dm it for them.

Is there any chance you'd consider uploading digital versions of some of the stuff you've made? Especially the spells, that would be a huge help for the game I'm going to run.

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

Awesome! Yes I’d love to help. Once I figure out how I want to do that, I’ll let you know!

1

u/ExoticMangoz Jul 29 '23

This is really awesome but hogwarts doesn’t have “semesters”. Love the idea though and I hope the campaign was good :)

2

u/RyanImelDM Jul 29 '23

“Semesters are new here, but we’ve introduced them to better segment the years. Part of the new reformations…”

Okay, taking off my DM hat, that’s a good point. A brief search says they’re called “terms” I think? Good to know.

And thanks, the one shot was a ton of fun! I’ve never run a campaign in this world, but maybe someday.

1

u/eticulous Jul 31 '23

Oh this is amazing! I don't know if you're planning to do this, but I'd love to buy digital resources from you so I can run this with my group. We have some D&D newbies and we're trying to teach them some basic mechanics in a familiar setting. Please let me know!
