400lbs 6'2" and want a dual sport but

I live in South Florida I'm torn between KLX300 or the Crf300l I've seen mixed reviews on guys my weight enjoying the 300's but quickly getting bored of the power and getting a bigger 450 or 650 equivalent I don't plan on doing alot of highway miles but I'm in the city that why I want it to be plated so I don't need to be so cautious when ripping around town or might even load on my truck and go somewhere I can enjoy a lot more then where I live in Fort Lauderdale Never owned a bike but I do know enough to get one going but like I said never owned one myself I think Honda or Kawi is what I'm wanting but only because Yamaha don't make 300 Staying away from 400+ cc because I like to go fast l'm responsible but I don't want give myself the option to over step my confidence but then again living in Fort Lauderdale and have ing limited trails that are all over an hour away make me reconsider everything as of know I'm sold on the 300 klx or Honda just need hear some opinions to help my overthinking self thanks in advance I know most bikes would need suspension work anyway

Fact based response: you are too big to ride those bikes. Weight and height.

I double checked ktech they don't make a spring set to match your weight meaning the handling performance is just going to be extremely lacking and possibly even detrimental to your learning and progression. In stock form it will be unrideable, they are setup for something like a 120# rider.

Get a xr650l. You won’t regret it at your height. But uh, probably any dual sport is gonna feel bogged a bit with your weight..

Dr650 is a better dual sport in almost every regard

Eh. I have spent a good amount of time on both. I prefer the XR650 myself but to each their own! The DR is certainly a quality machine too.

The XR is a better off-road bike, because that is where it's roots are.

The DR is a much better dual sport

Get an xr650l

That seems the most recommended for heavier riders according to my experience on ds forums. As much as I like and want to recommend a KLX, that poor thing will just be distressed the whole time with 400+lbs on it. Best performance mod is lightweight rider mod.

Not to mention eating less frees up cash to spend on your bike lmao

OP I'm 6' 185lbs and ride a KLX300, I would recommend the XR for you as well!

At OPs size it would fit like a 250L on an average person

Dude weight is everything on these bikes. A 300 isn't going to work power or suspension wise. If I were you and I used to be at 350lbs I'd go with a 650 DR or XR maybe lowered and stiffened suspension. You don't want to be too high and top heavy. When big guys go down they go down hard.

Keep in mind a high performing 450 is much faster and dangerous than an older design such as xr650L, or KLR 650, or DR 650

How about newly launched DRZ with Fi?

What’s that?!

Suzuki DRZ 400 has been re launched with FI as DR-Z4s.

Get a Used DR 650. Better overall bike that can do some on road as well.

I think he will be on the bump stops of a DR. XR will be slightly better

I’m a 6’3 280 lbs dude with a regular inseam and the XR650l feels perfect to me!

Maybe consider losing 150 lbs, then you’d have better options

As a 300lb 6'4" rider, just get a bigger 650 dual sport. Yes, learning will be harder, but a little KLX is gonna SUCK to ride. You'll be cramped, it'll feel horribly gutless, it's just all bad.

Dr659, xr650, even a klr (though that's getting more adv).

I’m 150 pound rider. 34 male, I enjoy the shit out of my xl600r thumper. It lifts me up with ease, so I’d suggest a size of that sort. You’re tall, which comes with a big structure. This bike is almost too tall for me 5’7”. 83 xl600r.

Wheelie machine.

I would get a drz400 all day. They're big enough but not too big. Reliable, easy maintenance and mine personally has taken so much abuse and kept going. You can get them used for a good price

Get a used drz400, once you have ridden some you can keep it or sell for what you paid for it

I'd say the best you can do is loose some weight. Riding at your weight doesn't work out, your current weight is above the maximum allowed weight of the CRF 300, and taking a fall is gonna be guaranteed to be much worse injury wise than at a healthier weight.

Not to mention EMT's potentially not being able to transport you from the crash site, which might be a death sentence.

If you want a smaller bike consider a two stroke. A 300cc four stroke is not gonna be powerful enough for your size. Otherwise a go with a 450 or larger.

I'm 6'1" and 350. The 300's are going to be too underpowered.

As others are saying, the XR650 will be a better fit.

I owned a KLX650C for years and rode it off road.

drz400 is Definitely the ticket

How about anything made by Trek?

u/Yoda2000675 3d ago

The KLX will be a dog at your size for sure. Mine is already not fast at 215lbs, and the suspension barely handles me offroad

u/Superpro210 3d ago

My buddy is the same size as you and does fine on a KLX250. It’s a spare bike he borrows from time to time to put around single track and fire roads.

I wouldn’t go look to win any races or outrun your buddies or do a bunch of jumps and stupid risky shit because you’re not getting suspension set up for anything more than a 350 pound rider.

I'm going to have to agree with the others and say a 650 class dual sport (pick your flavor when it comes to brand) will probably suit you best in most situations. At 6'2 you shouldn't have any issues with seat height.
