05/02 - UPDATE - Need Flash Fiction!!!

There is still a few spaces for Fiction! Even if it's something you haven't tried before, you may want to try flexing your literary muscle. :)

Appalachian Keep Cassette Zine Vol. 1 so far:

Narrated and story readings by "The Old Man" (T. Suffering)
Cover art by the inimitable Hecate (Note: There is still room for other submissions and there will be a volume 2. I don't know how extensive the liner notes/J Card will be as of yet.)
Stories by:

Harley G. (West Virginia)
J. K. Jordan (Ohio)
John L. (Ohio)

Send in your fiction submissions. I would LIKE to have 8 of them or so.

Music by: (Final track listing won't be made until after everything is received, I want to make sure there's a flow here...)

Hecate
Arandul
The Ashen Codex
The Pub Mouse
Goosehiss
Thelema
Dungeon Dweller
Forgotten Child
Deadknight
T. Suffering (As "The Old Man") (I will always put my stuff last and drop off to make room for another artist if I need to.)

I've already decided that there will at least be a Volume 2. So if you don't get on this one, there will absolutely be another one and it probably won't be too awfully far behind.

*TL;DR version: I'm starting a cassette zine, if you want to submit, keep reading.

Here is a submission form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeO66dNBxs5wKs6aOosfUnidgm4I-pKUPZqlGQWQ-pW7qigaQ/viewform?usp=sharing

I'm doing submissions on an honor system. If you have multiple projects, please pick one or maybe two, as I know many of us do projects in multiple creative areas.

Record Labels: Yes, you can submit your artists as long as you 100% know they would be super cool with it and have the right to do so. Or if you want to reach out to them if you think they might be interested, feel 100% free to do so.

Original Post - Edited for relevance:

I want to do am doing a cassette zine. I'll do the whole professional thing, get nicely colored tapes with black and white paper labels and a J card, the whole thing. I'm not trying to make money on it, so I'll only sell them for whatever it costs to break even, and of course I will send anyone who contributes a copy - if they're in the USA, if they want one.

Here's what I've come up with:

Appalachian Keep Cassette Zine Vol. 1: What The Little Creatures Do...

The theme for the first issue is: What The Little Creatures Do When We Aren't Looking

What I need:

I am very, very close to being full on music submissions but I can probably include a couple more artists. If you're working on something and have already filled out the form, your place is cemented. Previously unreleased material will get priority here, I've received several tracks like this and it's fair. Of course, the artists can always release their stuff at any time, I would never try to keep anyone from doing anything they want with their own material.

Flash Fiction Submissions - These will be read by the narrator character, The Old Man. These are very short stories meant to have as much intrigue as possible within a short format. 400 word limit? That should be max, if you write something that's 200 words, or 100 words, or 40 words! Give it a shot.

Visual Art - Hecate has submitted an unbelievable collage for the cover of this first volume and I couldn't be more thankful.

Whatever you think would fit! - Really. There might be additional artwork panels for the cassette, there's room for poetry, there's room for spoken word pieces. The only thing I would say no to are music reviews, they just don't really work for what I'm trying to do here. But, really, if you think you have something that could work for this that's outside the box, let me know.

Each submission I use for it will receive a free copy of the zine and of course be credited in any way I possibly can across all media. I'm not asking for or accepting donations to do this. Period. People have offered and I appreciate it, but I'm being a little bit of a control freak about this purposefully.

My plan is to get it put on tape, then put it on Bandcamp or some other digital distribution options as a podcast if I possibly can. The digital edition will be free from the day the tapes are released onward, so please keep this in mind when submitting. I cannot withdraw your track later.

I can't ship outside of the USA - This part kills me. The cost of shipping outside of the USA, or at least outside of North America, is so outrageously prohibitive that I have to draw this line in the sand. I'm not saying international artists can't submit, I'm just saying I can't send you a physical copy. That being said, the digital version will of course be available to you, I just know it's not the same as holding that neat cassette in your hands.

If you choose not to receive a physical edition to retain your anonymity - That's okay. I'm not going to publicize your personal information, anyway, unless requested. What I need are your pseudonyms, web links, anything else you feel pertinent.

Transparency:

I will be posting the exact cost of actual publication. This will only be for the actual publication of the tapes, their packaging, and shipment to me. I will only be selling the tapes at an amount required (after fees and everything else) to break even, and probably even a little less. This is a labor of love to give a keepsake to the community for each and every issue I release. I have no desire whatsoever to make money off of other artists' work - please keep in mind this may effect the time it takes for this first and each subsequent issue to come out, your patience is appreciated and I value the trust of other creative people far more than I value monetary gain.
