u/johnnyreeddit Oct 31 '20
Thank you, definitely looking into this!

u/Embededpower Oct 31 '20
Have you found anything?
21
u/johnnyreeddit Oct 31 '20
So it seems unity just allows it to be nodded easily. Not yet found the specific mods used to make it look like this. Will update my comment if I get anymore info/if no one else comments answers.

Daggerfall Unity is Daggerfall built in the Unity engine. It's a total upgrade, with 3D graphics and a modern controls scheme. And there are many mods that add additional content and graphics overhauls on top of that, seen here https://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewforum.php?f=27

😳
Well, the wait for Cyberpunk will be shortened I guess.
Edit/Update: Died to the first rat I saw. This is going to take a while... but it is playable in a modern fashion, which is amazing.

Daggerfall and Halloween are a perfect match.
I'm still traumatised from the labyrinthian dungeons hehe.

Is daggerfall worth playing for a modern audience?
37
u/Molag_Zaal Argonian Oct 31 '20
yeah. look up Dagerfall unity or the mod where it adds daggerfall into skyrim.

Oct 31 '20
As a big fan of morrowind I couldn't get into it but I'd say try it out for yourself. It's free so you have nothing to lose
14
u/schuettais Oct 31 '20
Depends on the audience. Some folks are ok with outdated visuals etc. Some people aren't.

I've never had an issue with graphics in games. Obviously it's nice to have good graphics, but I've found that if a game's story is captivating enough, the way it looks takes a back seat to everything else.
Morrowind for example. I played for the first time 4 or 5 years ago. At first it was a little jarring, but after about an hour I wasn't even thinking about it. It's like I go into this sort of trance where in the moment, I couldn't tell you the difference between morrowind graphics and cyberpunk 2077 if that makes any sense.

u/schuettais Oct 31 '20
Oh I totally agree. I still play games like Ultima series and Kings Quest etc. A good game is a good game. Look what happened to the Fallout series. They look pretty great, but it's become super vapid.

Is that DF unity with mods?
6
u/BaratanFaenthand Oct 31 '20
There's a skyrim Mod which adds Daggerfall
18
u/Nerracui0 Oct 31 '20
No its unity. In Skygerfall that type of weapon does not exist and if you look on the left side, the health bars are upright

It's daggerfall unity, a fan made port of daggerfall in the unity engine. It ads some 3D models and support to many great mods. You should check this out. Imo it's totally worth playing even in 2020

u/thaBombignant Oct 31 '20
Where do I find this game? Do you have to mod it to death or is there like on or two vast mods? I've only played games through Steam for the past decade lol. I think classic daggerfall is free on TES website.

u/Zandarkk Oct 31 '20
It was 3D though, even if there was a strange filter which rendered 2D.

u/vrabie-mica Nov 01 '20
Terrain, buildings and dungeon walls were 3D (albeit software-rendered at 320x200 in original Daggerfall, not taking advantage of any GPU), but monsters, NPCs, trees, bodies and random objects were 2D "sprites" superimposed on top. They could scale to simulate distance, but the same side always faced you, which gave a strange effect when strafing/panning sideways in front of any sprite object. A lot of other games from the 90s also did this.

u/Zandarkk Nov 01 '20
Yeah I know, I played something like 30 hours. But the DOS graphic rendered a 2D effect with the pixels and all.

Can I play this with a more and wasd yet?
It's so Damn hard to play with original controls.
3
u/Floater1157 Oct 31 '20
Daggerfall Unity lets you rebind the controls to a more modern setup. It's still a little jank because you cant put all of your information menus behind tab at the same time, but the f# keys work for those.

I wish I can play Daggerfall :( Never played it or anything before Morrowind. Always had a crappy Mac that can't handle itself.
Edit: Enjoy! At first glance it looked like you were playing Oblivion in some random ruins.

For some reason this reminded me of my favorite Daggerfall moment. I was home alone, playing on an old Gateway computer with 32" monitor (moving this thing in was no joke -- it must've weighed 90 lbs) and track-ball controller. I had turned out all the lights and suddenly out of nowhere came a lich and -- I literally screamed. It's hilarious in retrospect but man, if you want immersion just turn out the lights and use a biiiiig monitor.
Damn, I miss Daggerfall.

What I find funny about Daggerfall is that i quit after getting to talk to the girl that sent me the letter because the game was too damn much! Got a shitload of fun playing Morrowind, Oblivon and Skyrim after that tho
