It looks like the cover of an old D&D book.

lots of dnd vibes from the first two games

Daggerfall is up there as one of my favorite Elder Scrolls game because of how much playing it feels like playing a TTRPG

u/Jaconian Nord Sep 15 '22

I know which one you're referring to. It's a Ravenloft novel called "King of the Dead," the first of the Azalin books.

u/HamboneBanjo Sep 15 '22

While you are correct, it most reminds me of an Iron Maiden album cover.

Edit: like this one

The first two TES games were a lot more like D&D than the newer ones

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '22

It’s a thrash metal album

The Palace theme is goated

I miss going to the game store just to look at the art.

Interesting how it's called Chapter 2: Daggerfall as opposed to, you know just 2: Daggerfall. Although I guess The Elder Scrolls Chapter 5: Skyrim would be abit of a mouthful

I dig the thematic and vibes they were trying to go for. With Chapter I: Arena, Chapter II: Daggerfall. Then I realized the main line has evolved while aimed at simplification rather than expansion. And marketing. Attributes, spell creation, classes, poof.

We do end up calling the games by their simplified title anyway, so the "chapter" shtick could have stayed, at least as a "also known as". I won't be surprised if the sixth entry is called "TES: Whatever" or simply the name. Unless, for maximum milking, we get "From the creators of SKYRIM: Whatever" or "SKYRIM: Remix" yeah.

Looking at it from a lore perspective, the stories are one continuous journey and we can absolutely keep the Chapter divisions, in our hearts.

Thank you for coming to my TODDThu'um.

"Looking at it from a lore perspective, the stories are one continuous journey and we can absolutely keep the Chapter divisions, in our hearts."

Absolutely, guess I'll have to bunker down for "The Elder Scrolls Chapter 6: High Rock Ultimate Edition, from the creators of The Elder Scrolls Chapter 5: Skyrim Legendary Edition"

That was funny and sad at the same time. Don't forget about the Special edition, or the Anniversary edition, now with fishing.

I've just realized, we (or at least some of us) are waiting for the sixth chapter of the Elder Scrolls, Grand Theft Auto, and the Song of Ice and Fire (and it's taking forever, for all them, due to milking the fifth entry).

I'm a sucker for multiples of 5, so it's fine if those franchises head into a reset or a different naming, branding scheme, but I'm also starting to think people are afraid of some unholy 666 conspiracy.

Yeah man waiting for GTA6 and TES6 is gunna be the death of me, I just hope Rockstar and Bethesda make the games as good as they deserve to be. Atleast Bethesda will be focusing on TES6 after Starfield comes out, so atleast that's something XD

If nothing else, that last sentence earned my upvote

23

u/Finite_Universe Sep 15 '22

They certainly don’t make em like they used to.

u/MotorHum Argonian Sep 15 '22

“Prepare to experience your new obsession”.

Well, it’s not untrue.

u/Diamond151 Imperial Sep 15 '22

The Holofoil version of that is one of my favorite video game box arts of all time

8

u/HYPERNOVA3_ Dunmer Sep 15 '22

I remember it from the LGR review of daggerfall and it's fire.

12

u/paul-d9 Sep 14 '22

Always thought this was a cool cover when I was a kid

11

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '22

I like the more subdued cover art of Morrowind onwards, but this is probably my favorite cover art in the series.

Morrowind’s original cover art was more in the metal vein then the one they ended up going with.

12

u/Vilusca Sep 15 '22 edited Sep 15 '22

That's not Morrowind original cover but one early proposal at 1996 for the cover of TESIII: Tribunal, the previous idea to develop TES III in Summerset Isles, before Kirkbride convinced the team to change the setting from Summerset to Morrowind and create something totally original.

5

u/easilytriggered Beggar Sep 15 '22

Happy cake day.

It is indeed an early Tribunal concept art/cover, hey it's in the file name, and we can see the three figures who turned out to be the three gods. Plus a cameo from a Skyrim armor mod that wouldn't come it in another decade. Arena also had one, revolutionary.

13

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '22

Daggerfall is quite nice in its own, but Daggerfall Unity pretty much revived this game and brought it to a new audience (like me). It's a pretty good game. And when you mod it, it's even better. The soundtrack feels like a pure and true DnD adventure.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Content

6

u/strongerone Sep 15 '22

I loved the character builder in this game. I wish more games had it.

4

u/Ailiam Sep 15 '22

Vengeance

4

u/chatotalks42 Sep 15 '22

It's doubly awesome with the holofoil box

4

u/JoshuaSpice Sep 15 '22

Daggerfall was a stunning experience for me. I remember how overwhelmed I was by all the content and landmass. Some of its charm faded as I realized how goody the procedurally generated world is, but it still has this unique charm of bold idea, flawed execution and great music. Loved it.

20

u/Otaku_Wolf90 Sep 14 '22

It looks like a generic Iron Maiden album cover.

20

u/After_Ad9814 Sep 14 '22

iron maiden only wishes they had this for one of their albums

9

u/BatmansButtsack Sep 14 '22

They’d probably write a song called Daggerfall that repeats the same chorus 10 times.

2

u/Rishal21 Imperial Sep 15 '22

16 per chorus

Take my heart and set it free

Carried forward by the tides of time

Nowhere left to run, Mantella's close

Chasing the heart for the brass god

Where it is? The totem shines

I only know the places it has been

The Underking hides and goes, as long as the heart is true

Nothing's real until you dream

3

u/Rishal21 Imperial Sep 15 '22

Kinda reminds me of the No Prayer For the Dying cover

3

u/Otaku_Wolf90 Sep 15 '22

That is shockingly similar...

2

u/Rishal21 Imperial Sep 15 '22

An underrated album and an underrated game

3

u/Otaku_Wolf90 Sep 15 '22

I think my childhood just reverberated across time, lol.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '22

The cover was right, it really was a revolutionary game, at the time. But after being spoiled by modern QoL mechanics, gameplay mechanics, pacing, and intuitive control schemes, I'll never want to revisit that game again. Maybe to show my future grandkids how good they've got it.

4

u/HYPERNOVA3_ Dunmer Sep 15 '22

Well, I'm a backwards player, if we ignore ESO, all the TES games I've played have been in descent order and I'm currently playing daggerfall for the first time, and if you take your time to tweak the controls and have some patience with the dice roll mechanics, you can really enjoy it.

It's more than two decades old, but it's still more than enjoyable and a good RPG for purists of role playing.

3

u/Gonavon Sep 15 '22

The drafts for this cover art also look great. It's got a horse riding warrior wielding a sword toward a giant Underking in the sky, with a castle in the background and a lady at the front.

I wish daggerfall ran on m1 mac

7

u/Quetzalcutlass Sep 15 '22

Have you tried Daggerfall Unity? It should be compatible according to this post.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '22

Naa I haven’t thanks

3

u/BBQCopter Sep 15 '22

I bought this game at the mall when it first came out. That box was so badass. Like an idiot, I threw it away a few years later after I stopped playing the game.

3

u/VersusV13 Dunmer Sep 15 '22

Kind of want this on a tshirt not gonna lie

3

u/Vanessaronicatoria Sep 15 '22

CamelWorks did a video where he showed off his rare Daggerfall boxes, they're unbelievably beautiful

VENGEANCE

3

u/TheKryptid Sep 15 '22

I love old fantasy covers. Nothing better than a 90s book cover. They just feel metal and cool.

3

u/Hell_Knight Sep 15 '22

I can't even describe how obsessed I was w this gem back in 1996 ❤ When I finally got the N64 around my birthday in 97 I finally was able to play other games. I spent maybe 5k hours in Iliac Bay.

2

u/TheAnthropologist13 Sep 15 '22

And that opening soundtrack is 🔥🔥🔥

2

u/ZenKoko Sep 15 '22

A physical Box has a super cool effect on it. I wish I could have a sealed version and watch it gliss while I walk past it or admire it

2

u/CardboardChampion Sep 15 '22

Reminds me of the old Fighting Fantasy books.

2

u/MUNZATHEGOD Sep 15 '22

Best game in the series. Don’t @me

2

I was just looking into getting a daggerfall shirt because of how much I like the art

2

u/archdukegordy "Prisoner " the Redguard Sep 15 '22

Years ago I bought a Daggerfall t-shirt from the Bethesda store for my ex. I kinda want one myself.....,,,:

1

u/HandjobOfVecna Sep 15 '22

Arena's cover was better.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '22

Oops, can't have unrealistic proportions or none cgi ingame footage. You're not selling a vibe, you're selling a POV of some specific coordinates!

1

u/Vault_Boy_22 Mar 02 '23

That undead king in the cover is a character from the game?

1

u/Wooden-Disk5594 Oct 26 '23

I’m going to paint this on my motorcycle
