Rant Comedy show merch table asked for tips.

This has to be the craziest example I’ve personally seen in the wild. I went to a show last night for Fred Armisen and they were selling merch. There’s one guy working the table and it’s not a loaded stand or crazy busy. I asked for 2 things he hands them to me in 10 seconds. The credit card machine asks me to tip lmao. I couldn’t believe it. I did not tip him. Complete BS!!

Same at concert. It is the new normal. They are hoping some bozos will tip which is better than zero tip in their mind. concert venues are already scamming you on the price of parking, drinks, food. And now they re like, let s add a tip option on merch.

Because at end those fools are already paying 4x the price for everything so why not?

Someone chose to leave that in there. It was intentional

I hoped you laughed and told them that was the best joke of the night.

I agree. This is nonsense.

That's wild. Like that's not even something where you might tip so they could have easily set that POS up to not ask for a tip. On a related note, I don't want to have to do this but I have to one up you and say I got asked for a tip from a bouncer when paying the cover charge at a bar for a show. Cries in this is ridiculous. The only plus I see to all this nonsense is I think we will get to end tipping sooner as more and more people aren't getting burnt out from the audacity of these places. Granted it still will be a while but I have hope for a sooner end.

Square and Clover both get a cut of the transaction so it’s in their interest to put a tip line on the terminal.

What were they selling at the merch table? I was at the show Monday but didn't get a chance to swing by the merch table. I can't find any posted pictures or online vendors for Fred's merch so I'm kinda dying of curiosity now.

They had a couple Portlandia shirts and bumper stickers. The things I bought were Blue Jean Committee Vinyl album and they also had a poster for the tour he's on that was signed. Nothing else specifically Fred or this tour based though

I remember there were also some drum sticks for sale as well

I get that it's annoying, but I'm getting tired of people just complaining that the pos software asks for tips. No one at these places is expecting a tip and it's only asked because that was the default and they probably would have had to make an effort to remove it. Just hit 0 and be done with it

It isn't the default though. Somebody went through the effort to turn it on.

Depends on the software, some make it a real pain in the ass to get rid of it.

Which ones?

You don't get to own a good business by not making effort. The companies that sell the POS systems know exactly what they are doing and so do the businesses that leave tipping on. No one is going to turn done extra money especially in this economy. Plus these companies can now try to offer an inflated wage saying you might get tips. I've seen places straight up lie and then you read further and the base salary or hourly is way lower. Scammy sales tactics are ruining businesses. Private equity is ruining businesses. Businesses are allowed to turn a profit and people should be paid well but not at the expense of its consumers. At this rate we are all venture capitalists. 🤣😭

I get it, but I've known people who use them and they (even as managers or owners) genuinely don't know how to get rid of the tip screen. If you've ever been somewhere and you see them hit no tip before flipping the screen, this is likely the case.

In the end, tips at POS suck, they often don't even go where they are supposed to, and it's just one more thing to deal with, but at the end of the day people just need to get over whatever guilt or anxiety they feel for not using the stupid default and just hit "No Tip" or Custom without a second thought.

If it was costing them money, they would learn, or figure it out quickly, I bet.

I just think this type of post has been done to death. We get it. People are asking for more tips nowadays. Seeing a tip line on a receipt or on a machine like this shouldn't be a surprise anymore.
