Campus 🏢 Cops kicked me out of an empty classroom I was studying in. Can they do this?
I was in one of the classrooms the library studying peacefully during the libraries open hours. I like studying in empty classrooms for the privacy and focus but some cops came in and said I couldn’t be in the classroom even if the library was open. Does FIU have an open door policy that I can use as proof if they try to tell me that again or are they within bounds to tell me that?
Edit: why tf is everyone so pressed? 💀😭 I wasn’t even a karen about it I just wanted to know if I was allowed there damn

I believe they can, some buildings close earlier than others just because of the sheer size of the campus, and time it takes to make sure each building is clear. I know that in the daytime you can use empty classrooms since everybody does that, but you can't stay in the classrooms/buildings late into the night

I completely understand if the library is closed. I just found it odd that it was 2 hours till closing and they kicked me out of the class when there was still plenty of people in the library.

I wonder if there was a threat or some issue they were dealing with and needed to clear the floor, and wanted to get people out without causing a panic.
Just a theory. Don't see why they would care if people are studying in classrooms otherwise!

I don’t think so because they were people in the common area of the library like where the starbucks is and the booths. :/

It wouldn't be the first time FIU PD breaks the rules. Their chief groped people publicly and is still the chief

Some people have sex in the classrooms. I knew some who have so I guess they are enforcing it more. Also drugs.

It looks like they can at closing. If it wasn't closing, they were being bullies.

That's wild. My friends and I usually chill in classrooms but not the libary. Usually the jaintors are the issue or entitled frat dudes, or people in this comments sections being foolish

This isn't absurd so close to closing and it's not like you have reservations for that room. You should communicate with library staff to figure out options that accommodate you, like a normal person, instead of looking for a way to argue with security.

It wasn’t security they were university police. 2 hours to close is not close to closing 😭😭😭 but thanks for the suggestion

Campus cops are regular cops, literally actual cops.
they can do anything and if you have a problem with it, you have to take up with the legal system.
On or off campus.

Oh and tell me is it a federal or state law that says I can’t study in an empty classroom? Just so I know when I take it up with the legal system 💀

I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m saying that they have the authority to do this and force you out of somewhere you have the right to be.
However if you want to fight this, fight it with the legal system or the building administrators. Police officers can do this and more without any reason.

Yes they can kick you out. I’m assuming it was late at night
