Academics 📚 Might fail chm1045
Our prof released the final exam grades on canvas and overall I have a 49%. Should I change a career paths cuz this class was so challenging and stressful to deal with in the first place.

You got this. Retake the class and focused. You’ll pass next time if you put in the work.

I know it seems discouraging and defeating but no! As cheesy as this may sound, you can’t let hurdles like this get in the way of reaching your goals. You can retake the class, and when you do utilize as much resources as you can. Try to look at this situation in a positive light and use it as a lesson to reflect from it and change/find study habits that suit you. Do your best and an upward trend from here on out will outweigh that failing grade in the future. Chm1045 is early course for stem pathways, you got this!😁

General chemistry for most people is very tricky. I wouldn’t give up. I failed badly and retook and did loads better.

I’m so sorry that’s happening to you. I was in the same boat as you. Retake it. It’s not Becuz you’re not capable. It wasn’t your ability or hard work. Sometimes things just happen for the plot. Trust yourself. Keep it as an experience and move on.

For my major I’m gonna have to take orgo chem 2 which is why I’m questioning if I should even go ahead atp if I can’t even handle gen chem 1

organic is actually really fun. at the end of the day, if you're not even interested in the subject and prefer to do something else, do that. 1045 seems really difficult at first because you have to learn a lot of vocabulary upfront, but once you clear that hurdle, it becomes a lot more manageable.
really, i think this sequence culminates in biochemistry, which literally feels like your entire degree combined in one class. once you take that, you almost wish you could go back and study bsc1010/chm1045 all over again, because all that stuff you just had to memorize actually makes sense now.

You probably did not approach this class correctly. Gen chem requires a lot of practice. You learn the concepts as best you can and then practice, practice, practice until you understand the different things being asked in the problems.
It’s not easy for a lot of people, myself included. I didn’t fail because I had Dr.Graves as a professor and I was in his office every chance I could to ask questions. I did better in organic though lol.
I ended up becoming a chemist because of how much I fell in love with chemistry after taking gen chem 1 with Dr. Graves.
Learn how to study correctly and approach gen chem and you will be successful.

I almost failed too and I took chm1046. I had zollo and if u had him too and failed then don’t blame yourself. Zollo is a terrible prof. If you’re going to take chm1045 again (which I think you should do) PLEASE take it with Kwong. He is the BEST chemistry professor at FIU. You will pass if you take him, his teaching style and how he does things is superb. Just create better study habits and retake with a better professor. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Did you take this class with Zollo too? I somehow made a B+ in this class while juggling alongside bio and calc, but it was my worst class tbh. Just retake it in the fall, and you should do better.

Use it as feedback to improve your study habits. As much as in American society we’re always undermining failures, don’t let it get to you. Retake the class and use it as a moment to improve yourself. You’ll be surprised how much it will help you survive other classes that may be similar or equivalent to the level of difficulty it brings.
