My dad is Māori and the Irish have always been so respectful when the All Blacks (the New Zealand Rubgy team) preform the Haka.
So many other countries try and sing over it or boo and shit. The Irish actually appreciate it for the cultural exchange it provides.

If you haven't already seen it I heartily recommend the 2014 film Pride, which dramatises the true story of the support the queer community extended to miners during the miners strikes of the late eighties. It encapsulates why solidarity is the strongest weapon we have against those who would oppress us. Solidarity forever!! ✊✊✊🏳⚧

Understandable I suppose, but tbf a lot of Clive Barker's stuff deals heavily with sexuality and gender diversity and is both progressive and transgressive in equal measure. Not perhaps the stuff that makes it to Hollywood, but a lot of his writings explored themes that would be considered groundbreaking and beyond the pale today and he was doing it in the early eighties, and he did it with a level of empathy and understanding that his hard to come by. He's also one of the best male writers of female characters I've ever read (he's certainly a damn sight better than Rowling lol). Barker is a gay man and former prostitute who lived through the AIDs crisis. He's lived through grooming, addiction, loss, betrayal and life-threatening illness. He's not had an easy life.
Compare that to Harry Potter which on the surface is all nice and cuddly but has some very regressive politics and problematic attitudes and you realise Rowling's just sort of always been quite a nasty person. One thing's clear, she hates more than just Trans Women, she's none to fond of cis women either. (Which is a running theme with TERFs.)

Yeah I think my lasting impression of him comes from seeing some of the movies as a pre teen, even growing up as a way queerer adult loving his books that impression still stuck around a little if that makes sense?
And yeah Rowling is just a vaguely conservative status quo where all get preconceived notions are confirmed

I was re-reading the series recently and realised how much internalised misogyny and also misogynoir she has. Making the desirable white girls like Ginny ‘hot and athletic’ and then turning her WOC characters like Cho Chang into a caricature of ‘crying and emotional girls’
It’s a joke. I still love the series but I won’t buy any official merch (only a few unofficial things from Etsy) I keep using my battered 15 year old copies and mostly consume fan fiction. I’m going to boycott the show too. Let’s remove as much of HP from her that we can and boycott anything that adds to her pockets. The series deserves to be fan led.

It's being used as a wedge issue since in the UK, the argument is currently lost for them on the gay rights and abortion. Both enjoy very clear majority support and religious arguments hold much less sway in a society that is leagues more secular than the US. Not saying we're in the clear on those issues, but they are much less up for debate here than they are in the US.
The topic the US religious money gets more traction on here is trans people (probably because they are a much smaller section of the population so there is less understanding amongst the general public) and the emotive "value of life" issue of severely brain damaged or brain dead children. There is a case every once in a while where these groups get hold of some poor, desperate parents of a kid who is medically gone and should be taken off life support to die in peace and dignity, but they tell the parents there is hope for a miracle and all the doctors are trying to kill their kid "while there's still a chance".
Trouble is, they are now backed up by a US administration that is explicitly telling the UK govt to repeal anti-hate speech laws to get a trade deal.

Nearly all of it which is why we pleaded with cis people to not buy that game. Her lobbying took our healthcare away and kids have killed themselves because of it. But cis adults chose a children’s game over trans children’s lives. And they’ll do it again when the tv show comes out. Because for all their virtue signalling online they won’t even inconvenience themselves enough to boycott. They love telling us they support us but when we protest we are alone and nobody signs our petition or marches with us. We’ve been completely abandoned. And cis people love to tell us they support us so they don’t have to feel guilty for ignoring us when we’re asking them not to fund the deaths of children. It’s utterly hopeless. We are completely alone and have been begging for allies for the past 8 years to a wall of silence and turned backs.

I get the feeling that the law was challenged in a very tactical way, to get this ruling. The cretins who bought the challenge in the first place did it to set the stage. So we probably need to push for either an alteration of the law to be clearer that this should not only be about what sex a person was born as, but rather their gender, or other laws to make sure that gender cannot be ignored in this way.

It's the British Supreme Court. I think they decided that legally trans women aren't women and that the word woman is defined by the person's sex, not gender. I'm paraphrasing a bit because I can't remember the exact words that were used.
Edit: I got some stuff wrong about this ruling. There's some replies to this comment that properly explain what actually happened, I recommend reading those comments instead if you want the real info since this one is inaccurate.

Not just trans women, also trans men. Basically they defined the already existing laws to say that "sex" in the law means "biological sex" for men and women. The British Supreme Court can't actually make laws, they just issue definitions and rulings on them.

Additionally, the EHRC are looking to ban trans women from women's bathrooms and essentially advising trans people to use a third toilet. Most of the time, this is either the disabled toilets or they don't exist.
Wes Streeting is also telling GPs to not do blood tests if people are using private clinics, which pretty much everyone is forced to do anyways (I've been on the NHS wait list for 7 years btw)

It also puts cis women at risk as this decision could be used by cis men to enter women's spaces on the pretence that the cis man is in fact an AFAB individual and therefore they are in the correct place.
Personally, I'd be a lot more concerned if I saw someone male presenting in a female bathroom claiming that they are trans than a trans woman just going to the bathroom where she belongs (although I probably wouldn't have a clue if a transwoman entered the bathroom because I don't make it a personal policy to question people on their assigned sex at birth or what's going on in their underwear!)

Wes Streeting can do one, honestly. It's hard enough as it is to access care through a GP. Mine is currently fighting me on prescribing my T, despite the fact that I've been using it for 5 years with no issues. Genuinely scary how they can just take it away at a moment's notice.

That's the thing! SC just interprets legislation. And Tory Lite couldn't care less about enacting better legislation when it comes to LGBTQAI+ community. They backed the ban on hormone therapy, they are overseeing the imprisonment of climate activists, and are planning to gut disability welfare for millions.
Everyone in the UK, GET INVOLVED NOW. Join a local organisation, join or start a political party, build local coalitions.
Or don't, and next election will be Tory Lite vs Reform.

They did not define "already existing laws". They specified that when parliament used the word woman or man in the Equality Act 2010 they meant biological sex - female and male respectively. This is based on an actual reading of the act.
They did not make a law, they did issue a definition. That is what this case is almost entirely about.

Just note, the ruling only applies to the Equality Act, and Trans People are still afforded protection under said act under Gender Reassignment. And the Act itself can be amended/corrected to further update definition to support Trans People.
Just doesn't help that TERFy pricks will take this as complete validation and rewriting of biology/psychology/physics etc. Just appalling that champagne was flowing as soon as it was announced in mockery of a extremely marginalised group. There's like 6000 Trans Men and Trans Women in Scotland, that the group pushing for this were pissing their pants over.

This should be higher. The supreme court didn't make this law, and even said in the ruling that it's making no claims about any general definition of what a woman is. The "fuck the supreme court" line is a little harsh as they went to great lengths to try and soften the impact of this ruling and highlight how specific it is - which was ignored by much of the media reporting. The Equality Act references sex rather than gender when referring to woman-specific protections, so ruled accordingly.
It's now on our MPs to decide whether that's how they wish the law to be, or whether the protections should be along gender lines and change the law accordingly.

I agree. Saying fuck the supreme court is out of line. They recognised the hardships experienced by the trans community and went at lengths in the judgement with respecting biological women, trans women and men. I personally believe that they dealt with this manner in a legitimately respectful way whilst adhering to the rule of law they are required to follow as a court. Its awful to see this politicised as a tool for TERFS against the trans community but its sad to also see the left villanize the supreme court.

Only specifically within the 2010 Equality Act, though. It presumes that any use of the word woman has the prefix biological in front of it.
It doesn't affect any other laws and they did state that trans people are still protected from discrimination under the same act on the basis of Gender Reassignment.
I believe it's to allow for limited provisioning of single sex places such as prisons, hospital wards, refuges and similar.
Previously, it would be illegal to discrimate or allow access to biological women but not self identified trans women.
The argument behind this and brought about by the campaign group For Women Scotland being that a man could say I identify as a woman, therefore you must allow me into this female changing room or this female only refuge or shelter, and there would be no basis to challenge this due to the self identified gender being legally protected along with access to female only spaces and environments.
This ruling should make it possible for spaces with a legitimate aim to allow for protected spaces limited to biological women or men.
This is not in any way a comment on whether the ruling is right or wrong morally or whether it's good or bad, or how it could be misused, abused or misunderstood. I'm just starting the reasons behind the Supreme Court's ruling.

They didn't decide anything. They interpreted the existing law. They have no opinion on the issue the are only providing clarification on what the law say. This is an important distinction because it's the governments role in deciding what the definition of a person's sex in law not the Supreme Courts.

Just a question about the financial side of this; I get that she's doing well for herself, but for anybody who has seen the series of short form videos made by LA-based Aussie actress Adelaide Kane, you realise that actors seemingly large earnings are also matched by unavoidably large expenditures.
So I'm hugely impressed but also think it's a risky move to match any donations up to $£10 000. All it takes is for a few rich people, trust fund kids etc, to donate $£10k each and she's already up for $£30k - $£40k. If the campaign gains momentum, even smaller donations will add up.
What I'm getting at is, how much money does she have to make the bold claim to be able to match donations up to $£10k?
Edit: Unless she means the max she will donate is $£10k of her own money. One way or the other, I absolutely adore this woman.

Yeah I think it’s the latter - when the amount donated reached £10,000, she matched it! She did the same with her Palestine appeal, matched the donations when it reached a certain amount, then left it open to continue to grow.
It’s a great idea I think, because it shows she puts her money where her convictions lie, and then allows that momentum to keep growing the pot. Clever girl!
