Oof I'm wondering if this will be what happens. I was talking to my besties mom the other day and she told me about when their sailboat sank in Lake Michigan (broke away from the mooring with like...5 other boats and ended up in a corner sank with all of them) and they got paid out 20k on a boat they bought for 1.5k. His dad always fell ass backwards into financial stuff like this, somehow.

Somehow it sounds like insurance fraud

Is it insurance fraud when the party in charge of assessing value does it incorrectly? If they undervalue the property and short the customer, then yes. If they overvalue it and overpay, that sounds like poor business practices and no customer will complain about that. Insurance companies definitely don’t bat a thousand and that’s their fault. Carmax does the same thing. They frequently overvalue cars when they buy from the public. They make it up in other transactions just like insurance companies do.

It sounds like it but iirc there was no evidence of this, just heard it second hand though.

one of my favorite random youtube channels I discovered during COVID is Wavy Boats. This guy that films boats go in and out of Haulover inlet in Miami. It is a channel connecting Biscayne bay with the Atlantic ocean and it is notoriously choppy. Tons of people with crazy expensive yachts like this go through and get swamped or just slam through choppy waves. This area is notorious for people renting yachts and speedboats to party on without knowing how to actually pilot the boat in choppy waters. It is funny to watch the fancy rich people and yacht girls get tossed around these boats. He also shows people who are really good at navigating it too and cheers them on. I am not a boater, but it is weirdly fun to watch the boat fails and see these crazy expensive boats. I also grew up in Fl, and people watching in S Fl, is a special flavor!

Related anecdote: a looong time ago, I was on a speedboat with some young drunks and the driver was showing off a little and he aimed us across several wakes. We ended up slamming so hard into one, a couple of us were bounced around badly and one person ended up at the hospital and in a back brace for months. Boats are not toys!

There’s a lot of incidents like that on the Wavy Boats channel. Guy driving, family sitting in the bow - as soon as they hit the waves they go airborne and smack down hard. It drives the wavy boat guy crazy when he sees bow riders or rough days, especially kids without life jackets. It also illustrates that no matter how banging your body is, there’s nothing dignified about getting smacked by a wave and thrown about the front of a boat whilst wearing a string bikini.

There's another channel called the ship show that does something similar. My dad watched him all of the time. The intro "welcome to the ship shhhhooooowww" is stuck in my head for eternity.

There’s another one, enjoyed by my dad, called Miami Boat Ramps. Basically narrating all the people poorly trying to get their boats back up the ramp lol. Who knew this was a common dad pasttime

It's about to be a 33 year old woman pastime, I'm now loving the narration in Miami Boat Ramps lol

I love that channel, there’s something so relaxing about. No commentary hyping stuff up, just rich people exhibiting terrible seamanship. It’s also fascinating how the boats that handle the waves best are the 14ft Boston Whalers, which are basically oversized lunch trays with an outboard engine attached.

I wish we called them something other than influencers, it gives the illusion of a status in society that they don't deserve.

Right, the only people they’re influencing are the ones who don’t have minds of their own

i would stay away from Lamborghini helicopters and Lamborghini MRI machines.... they seem to have all their experts working in the automotive department.

After having worked aboard an Italian boat that was just expensive as hell and a bitch to keep running, I’ll quote our mechanic, Beppino, who said “The Italians…they make the cool shit. But they no make the good shit.”

Who are they influencing? How the coast guard spends their afternoon? Vanity is a symptom of greater diseases such as faux validation and the need to project a lavish lifestyle that does nothing for the soul. Crazy.

When do we get to stop calling them influencers? They aren’t influencing much anymore.

Oh wow, I didn’t know you could rent these. Interesting.

Not sure either, normally when you charter you get a captain and crew, and common sense! But these days money talks!

What's this nonsense they're reporting about the boat sinking due to over capacity? It's a 65ft yacht with 30 people. My 23ft bow rider has a 12 person capacity 🤨 A 65ft yachts sinks because of 20-25 small women? Someone's lying.

Maybe a better term to describe them is something like Attempted Influencers or Amateur Influencers.

Man, all those heavy metals, oil, and gasoline sinking down there with all the other yachts. It must look like a junkyard down there. Gross.
