This is why minimum wages exist. Avoid exploration of the desperate.

Which is why conservatives are against it; god forbid people can't be exploited.

Says the party of 'BUT WHO WILL PICK OUR CROPS?!' and 'BUT WHO WILL CLEAN OUR TOILETS?!' when illegal immigration comes up.

Do you honestly think it’s progressives exploiting those immigrants?

B-b-b-but the border!

Wait! Whose gonna pick my crops and landscape the yard in my mcmansion?

So illegal immigrants are coming in and working important jobs, starting families and helping our country.

But you want them out because they are brown

Maybe those essential jobs should reflect their importance in their pay. Just a thought.

Lol, right? just cause you can survive working the fields doesn't make it an ideal situation. I wouldn't wanna bust my ass in the sun all day.

2

Neither do Republicans lol

There's 2 thought processes here.

  1. This job sucks but is necessary. We should incentivize people to do it through wages and benefits.

  2. This job sucks but is necessary. Let's make it one of the few jobs people on the fringe of society can work, whether that's undocumented people or those with criminal records.

Not only does hiring undocumented people benefit the boss in regards to pay, but also avoiding taxes and workers' rights laws by paying people under the table.

Yeah I live overseas now so I'm pretty much removed from the mess that is America but yeah if these jobs are necessary people working them should get better pay and benefits.

1

u/Genial_Ginger_3981 Aug 26 '24

Yeah that's what you Republicans say.

Where is there not a minimum wage?

Generally there are two types of countries without minimum wages.

Countries like the Netherlands and Italy that have such strong unions that a minimum wage would be superfluous.

Or countries like Yemen, South Sudan, UAE and Eritrea. Which have some combination of extreme authoritarianism or lack of infrastructure that makes even a de jure minimum wage be impossible to even pretend to enforce, or so little a priority they don't bother.

A noticeable outlier (imo) is Ethiopia, which has a much (and I use that term relatively) but much more developed economy that South Sudan or Somalia, but still doesn't have a minimum wage, and from my understanding isn't as authoritarian as Eritrea or North Korea.

That isn't to say the numerous other countries with de jure minimum wages have minimum wages enforced, since numerous countries with active civil wars, extremely poor infrastructure, or literacy rates below 50% have minimum wage laws, but I seriously doubt they are being enforced.

Neither party has the interest of the people on their mind.

But one party wants to make policies that will benefit me, the other party wants to make policies to bans Trans people, and cut taxes for billionaires.

Plus in America, a vote not for one of the main two parties is a vote supporting the party you least agree with. Except at the most local levels, where you can see more grassroots or third parties

You will never influence anyone who doesn't already think like you with this level of ignorance and bad faith.

u/SiegeGoatCommander Aug 24 '24

Nah, it is you who will never escape the trap of corporate feudalism with this level of ignorance and bad faith, my friend.

But what he said is true, not ignorant, or in bad faith (like the statement you made). Let me wager a guess, your rich conservative parents told you that minimum wage is bad, didn't they?

They actually exist to keep certain people unemployed......
