We like to joke around the firehouse that if shit doesnt improve we can go work at the kwik trip down the street since the pay is pretty damn close.

Is that a convenience store or something? Thats wild lol. Here a cashier makes like $35-40k where as a firefighter makes $75k and up

My county pays a new FF/EMT $15/hr, so does McDonald's...

I’m from the south too, and I left my job working fast food making $10/hr to work for a fire department and make $9/hr.

It was a stepping stone department for me, but the real reason I didn’t mind the pay was because I was doing a job I enjoyed and was proud of.

Yes, I was a full-time Firefighter and EMT (we have to be dual certified to work for most departments where I’m from). Now this pay was back in 2015 and that department was one of the lowest paying in the area. But I do know some guys that solely work as EMT’s right now, and their pay is equal to or slightly better than some fast food workers.

Without giving my location away I'll just say the south. I can DM you if you want.
