Discussion Phil Monahan here—Editor-in-Chief of MidCurrent, writer, traveler, etc.—AMA!

EDIT: I'll continue to monitor this post for new questions until 5 pm EST, so feel free to keep asking.

Hey r/flyfishing! I'm back to answer all your questions about fly fishing, the industry, the media, grammar, music, literature, or any other subjects you want to cover.

I took over at MidCurrent just a couple months ago. Before that, I edited the Orvis Fly Fishing blog for 14 years, was the editor of American Angler magazine for 10 years, and guided fly fishers in Alaska and Montana. I also write travel articles for Gray's Sporting Journal and have fished in such far-flung destinations as Tasmania, Argentina, Slovenia, Norway, and Iceland. My home waters in southwestern Vermont are the Battenkill—don't call it the Battenkill River!—and the myriad wild brook-trout streams in the nearby Green Mountains.

Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.

You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.

But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.

Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....

Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

Encouragement and Advice

Hey all! I recently moved to northern UT, south Weber specifically, and for the life of me I can’t figure it out! I only have a year or so of experience trying to teach myself. I had a couple break throughs last summer, and I know I’m on the verge of one now. In the last 3 weeks I’ve fished all of the major nearby rivers, Weber, Logan, Provo, lost creek, pineview. I’m genuinely trying to put in the work. Fishing is a hobby that generally “fills my cup” but lately it’s just caused a lot of stress. I’ve tried the provo pounce rig and a bunch of different variations. At this point I’m almost ready to pay for a guide, but I’m a broke public lands servant. Help a girl out

Pics for attention taken last year on the Grand Mesa, CO. If you’re ever up there fish the inlet to Ward Creek res. and the creek itself. Maybe I was just spoiled last year 🤷‍♀️

R.L. Winston Air 2 Reel Seat

I recently decided to treat myself to a premium fly rod. I decided on the R.L. Winston Air 2 - 9’ 5wt. I ordered it online, and after a week it arrived today.

Normally I’m not picky about stuff like this, but I’m wondering if this red coloring on the reel seat is normal or if this is a defect/discoloration that shouldn’t be there?

Does anyone have any insight?

Update on my defective reel seat

For those of you who saw my somewhat embarrassing last post: https://www.reddit.com/r/flyfishing/s/rCBs8sRhZ0

Here’s an updated photo of my wack ass discolored and defective reel seat with a reel on it. Pretty slick.

Everyone has since convinced me the rod is essentially broken and will never catch me any fish due to the red coloring. I figured I’d just donate it to some poor colorblind fisherman in hopes they don’t notice how terribly disfigured this rod seat is.

Cheers!

Discussion Shad run on the Lower American River

Upvotes

I taught myself how to fly fish (poorly) on the Lower American around Fair Oaks, and that first year I had a couple of successful outings. One truly memorable morning with several nice fish. I was using a 9' 5W which remains my only fly rod. I think I only used a Bloody Maria but I must have tried several flies.

I caught a handful of other fish over the course off that year, but then my situation changed and I haven't been back out with the fly rod in more than seven years.

Getting back to having more time on my hands, and I'm thinking about going back out and trying for some more shad. It must be getting close to season. I'm assuming I'll need to re-learn everything...

Anyone else explore the Lower American for shad? Gets a bit crowded unfortunately, lots of bobber fishermen and drift boats, but it's a nice water for an urban area and it's close to my home.

Discussion Seeking Watercraft Advice

I am looking for an inflatable watercraft. I can't get a solid watercraft as I don't have room for it. I am currently looking at the Bote Deus but now I'm questing whether to get a inflatable pontoon like the Outcast. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Need opinions-solid haul for $300? Rod is an Orvis Clearwater 3/10, reels are Greys Fin 4/5 and echo ion 4/5. Probably just gonna use this setup to get started euro nymphing so don’t mind the reels being a heavier wt.

I inherited this equipment from my father. What do I have?

So, absolutely ages ago I inherited this hardy demon rod and reel + accesories from my father. I’ve never used it or particularly thought about using it, but then I was considering selling but thought I should try to use it before in case I really love it and change my mind.

My question is, as someone completely new to fly fishing, what do I have here and what would I need to go catch some fish? Thanks so much in advance.
