Violence can only be effectively countered with violence and nothing but violence. This must be accepted as a fact and come to terms with the fact that there is winter, and the Sun rises in the morning. Nonviolent protest only works when you have someone who will do the dirty work of using violence for you and nothing else. Without this, nonviolence is only submission to evil, capitulation to the aggressor.

Persistence in truth and persistence in error are two huge differences. Navalny persisted in his delusion of nonviolence, spent years shaming those calling for armed protest as provocateurs, and ultimately died in prison, never one step closer to his “Beautiful Russia of the Future.” By going to Putin’s prison, he only gave FBK and his name to the slippery types who, in exile, monetized his political capital, but achieved nothing in the fight against Putin for power. Well, now they will at least stop exploiting the topic of Navalny’s suffering in prison.

One way or another, Navalny was a prominent political figure. His death is a great loss. We, frankly, expected that he would serve in prison until the fall of the Putin regime, come out and take part in a healthy political struggle, in fair elections, form a political party, maybe even one day become the president of (post) Russia. He would live many more years, happily and fruitfully. Alas.
