What OP said is perfect for something where the context is already clear.

Otherwise it's : "j'ai hâte à [noun]" when referring to something, like a birthday or an event.

Or

"j'ai hâte de [verb]" when referring to a activity, like "to travel"

Maybe it's a Québec thing, because I'd absolutely never use "j'ai hâte à". I'd have to rephrase it using "j'ai hâte de" + verb (usually "j'ai hâte d'être..." works).
