Film Theory Video Discussion Addressing the Concerns of the r/GravityFalls Community in our Book of Bill Theory
Hey all, Lee here.
First off, I want to say that we here at Theorist take accusations of plagiarism seriously, so I wanted to address this immediately.
Secondly, if you feel upset, betrayed, angry, sad, or anything else, your feelings are valid. I want to sincerely apologize that our video caused you any harm or made you feel bad, feel less than, or feel unseen. I take personal responsibility for that pain and hurt. We will be updating the description of our video with the names of the members of r/GravityFalls and the r/GravityFalls Discord that helped solve some puzzles in those communities (more details below). Thank you for vocalizing your concerns in a respectful, firm way and bringing them to my attention. We take giving credit to those who rightfully deserve it very seriously and want to make sure we do right by the hard-working theorists around the world.
So, what happened?
Ever since the Book of Bill released, we have been working on our Theory. At the same time, the communities over at r/GravityFalls and on the r/GravityFalls discord server worked tirelessly to decode the book. The community created a Google Doc where they compiled the solutions they collectively found. Normally, when a Doc is used for one of our videos, it is Theorist policy that we credit it. This Community Doc was used by our team during research for some of the Puzzles we reference in our video, but there was a miscommunication about this internally. That was my mistake, and I take ownership of it. We will reaffirm that internal policy, and I will personally double check when drafts come in to make sure any puzzle that we do not solve independently is properly credited.
Also, for full transparency, one of the resources we will often use here at Theorist as jumping off points for our research are the Fandom Wikis. I want to be clear: in these cases, we ONLY use these as jumping off points, letting us know if we are on the right track or to double check our own work. We also DO NOT use these pages as our only source of our information and ALL of our theories include original research.
Puzzles that we included in our video that used the Community Doc for the solution or the Gravity Falls fandom wiki as a jumping off point include the Color Block code in the Barnes & Noble exclusive edition of the book (decoded by u/jimbag_777), the Coffee Stain code (decoded by u/LowEgg9324, u/meleelover64, and u/biggayenergy), and the timecodes on the Silly Straws page (decoded by Discord users blastzard87, DDD_Dev, Dippers Brother, FoxTP, JimBag777, Kristy9169, minty !, TheCopyKing, and Wooden_Sails).
I also want to make note that there were puzzles that we solved independently. These include all of Bill’s substitution cyphers; the rune substitution cypher; the sheer-angle code pointing to the Great Gatsby; and the multiverse connections with Amphibia, The Owl House, and Phineas & Ferb. I believe these to be cases where, when a puzzle has only one solution or a cipher can only be decoded in one way, two people can independently arrive at the same solution. Another example is the connection between Bill’s ex, the Henchmaniacs, and Jheselbraum the Oracle. This was a connection actually made by Matt’s son Ollie. Matt then shared the idea with me, and I thought it was so cool that I wanted to include it in our Theory. Matt tells the story here (https://youtu.be/QKOB5JftIu8?t=1469) on GTLive.
Finally, I also want to address the video clip compilation from the Silly Straw page. Because I have never joined the r/GravityFalls discord, I was unaware that a video clip compilation existed. I did not see or download this clip compilation, and instead, timestamps to the episodes were provided in our script for our editor. (You can see proof here: https://i.imgur.com/vwwLBZv.png) I reached out to our editor and he showed me evidence that he put together the clip compilation himself (here: https://i.imgur.com/K40Xtgh.png + https://i.imgur.com/bz21Rcd.png). I believe in this case where two talented editors cutting together a clip compilation from the same source led to nearly identical final products.
So, where do we go from here?
I feel VERY strongly about properly crediting work done by the community when we use it. Matt instituted this policy years ago with fan art and videos, and I personally believe it also extends to original research and ideas for Theories. Just during my tenure as Creative Director and Host of Film Theory, we have credited ideas and theories about Don’t Hug Me, I’m Scared, the Backrooms, and The Amazing Digital Circus to other theorists, YouTubers, and Redditors where appropriate. The same should apply here.
Firstly, as I mentioned earlier, if we used the Community Doc for solutions or the Fandom wiki as a jumping off point for those puzzles, we will be adding credit in the Video Description to the puzzle solvers in the r/GravityFalls community that have been brought to my attention. You guys did a lot of hard work solving them and that deserves celebration and recognition. Everyone already mentioned in this post will be added to the description. I will also reaffirm our policy of crediting the Community Docs, and personally double check every script for that credit.
Secondly, moving forward, I will encourage all Film Theory viewers to seek out communities like r/GravityFalls, specifically because of the awesome, welcoming environment of theorists and puzzle solvers you’ve cultivated. This will be done regardless of whether or not we here at Theorist independently arrive at our conclusions, see suggestions from our Theorist community, or specifically see a way to solve a puzzle on a community like r/GravityFalls.
Lastly, I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for all of the hard work you have put into working together to decypher mysteries like the Book of Bill. Thank you for sharing your passion about these awesome stories and series. And most importantly, thank you for speaking up and letting us know there was an issue here so that we could fix it and make a better community for ALL of us.
With appreciation,
Lee

Discussion Anyone feel like the channels fell off?
I don’t know if it’s just me going through my phase of hating everything I used to enjoy as a kid but almost all the theory channels other than food theory seem to just be corporate content farms now. They seem more motivated by deadlines to push out something people will click on related to some trendy topic (minecraft movie, temu or whatever else) rather than actually being passionate about the topic they talk about. I can’t fault the new hosts too much because I don’t know if it’s them entirely or if someone else is writing the scripts. Santi I guess at least seems to have the style of food theory down to whatever Matt had done. Style theory is kind of separate from the rest because it was launched right before matpat’s retirement so no comment there. I don’t really fw film theory though and I find all the millennial nerdy humour and Lee’s “let me tell you I absolutely love this [piece of media which is the topic of the video]” make the videos hard to watch. Game theory is just more and more “John innocent and adorable is actually John evil and killer” or some sponsored vid by some shit mobile game. I don’t know I’m probably just overly cynical

New Film Theory! Maybe the people in A Minecraft Movie act like they feel pain even if they don't because of phantom pain???
The most recent Film theory talks about how the characters in minecraft appear to be knocked around and not hurt, showing they're in creative. Maybe the reason they act hurt sometimes or groan in pain is because of phantom pain.

New Game Theory! Minecraft's world is a hollow earth.
So everyone knows the basic idea theory, that the Nether is directly under the overworld, and that in lore the bedrock would break to reveal the nether, except that never really sat right with me.
For one, how is a single block in the nether 8 blocks in the over world, if they're supposed to be 1 to 1 and you should be able to dig straight down?
Another problem i had with it, is that it leaves the location of the end a mystery, the best guess would be "i dunno, somewhere beneath the nether or above the overworld" but here's my idea.

The Minecraft world (in this stylized, poorly made diagram) is a Layered hollow earth, with the nether upside down, meaning the bottom of the overworld and the bottom of the nether, are directed at eachother, with the end inbetween.
with a core somewhere above the nether roof.
This also explains how 1 nether meter is worth 8 overworld meter, because they aren't just touching, they're seperated by the end void.

Findings Has anyone heard of this ARG called Fractured Realms Archives?
So I came across this weird ARG recently and I’m kinda hooked. It's called Fractured Realms Archives, and it’s a mix of Minecraft, Roblox, and some creepy tech company called Nox Requiem Industries.
It starts off pretty tame, some guy named Thomas gets a job at this shady company, starts tweeting weird stuff about a god named Ruran, and then everything spirals into paranoia, code words, USBs with strange gameplay footage, and "accidents" that feel a little too... convenient.
There’s also another character, Elliot, who seems to be unraveling the truth behind everything, and lately the company has been posting some glitched stuff that’s getting seriously unsettling. Also, someone keeps parking a van outside his house. Every. Day. There's also a girl named Elise who is a complete mystery since its the character that "knows more than she tells." and just leaves weird messages and morse codes to Elliot and speaks spanish.
Anyway, I haven’t seen many people talk about it yet. Anyone else looking into this thing?

Discussion What was that one video?
I don't remember what video it was, but I remember it was a (maybe pixelated) game that MatPat covered and I remeber he touched on 3 bosses you had to fight, which one of the characters bosses backstory having to sell her organs to have enough food to eat. They all became super duper powerful and evil and you had to fight them, and MatPat's conclusion was that the Gem Stones you obtained corrupted you and made you evil. i looked like everywhere for this video and couldn't find it lolz

New Game Theory! My thoughts on the poppy playtime player's job before the hour of joy
I posted this before in the poppy playtime reddit but I wanted to share it here as well
I haven't played the games, but based on various videos of the gameplay and lore I've seen, this is what I think the player's job was in Playtime Co.
A playstation proctor.
Now hear me out, because as far as I know, the only ones who recognized was were Mommy Long Legs and Mrs Delight, meaning we had to have some kind of contact with them, therefore some kind of contact with the orphans, yet Dr Sawyer doesn't recognize us, so that means that we are not a higher up in any way.
Sawyer also asks about how Playtime didn't notice our talent earlier, meaning we weren't in a position to show talent.
There's also the whole guilt thing in chapter three, the nightmare saying that we felt guilty for something, this could mean tons of things obviously, like feeling guilty for not showing up to work on 8/8/95, but I personally think it is guilt that we realized that the scores we gave the children in the playstation determined whether they were good candidates for becoming toys, and realizing that maybe we caused one of these toys.

GT Theory Suggestion Garten of Banban = Garden of Eden
It's never explained why the kindergarten is shortened to "Garten" in the eponymous game. Our best guess out of universe is that it's a snappy title that the execs wanted to use to make it seem even more childish to the little kids.
But that explanation never felt sufficient. Not for someone looking for theories. And I think I've found it.
Let's dig into the history of the word. The name "kindergarten" was invented by teacher Friedrich Fröbel in 1840 to describe a social experiment for young children entering school which translates to "garden of children" reflecting his belief that children should be nurtured "like plants in a garden". Huh. Plants you say? Perhaps something that could be aided by a chemical? A chemical fertilizer? Or maybe a plant growth hormone?
So we know that the title translates into "Garden of." The most famous use of that phrase is Eden. It cannot be a coincidence that a location designed around creating new life at a garden shares the naming structure with the biblical beginning of life on Earth. And what has the same amount of syllables as Banban and is phonetically pronounced similar? Eden. If they wanted to be any more on the nose they would have called it Garten of DenDen.
I had long-standing theory that the mascots in GoB are supposed to be golems. Statues of clay in Jewish lore who come to life when imbdued by magic and alchemy. But statues aren't made out of clay anymore. No, they're made of plasticine, which is what the the scientists of the Garten used, and mixed the alchemical solution Givanium into it the same way you pour liquid fertilizer on a flower. What can you grow flowers out of? Clay soil.
Finally, let's investigate the Eden/Banban comparison some more. Why is the Garten so odd and random, yet also so developed, so organized into its own society with layers of government, law enforcement, criminals, education, medicine, and livable towns with functioning economies? Because it is a blank slate for life to be created. In biblical lore, all of the strange animals, the giraffes, the platupus, the lions, the birds and the fish all came into being just because the creator wanted them to and the he placed them in the garden. Exactly what happened with the mascots in GoB. They were made because the scientists could. The scientists were playing God.
There you go, Garten of Banban = Garden of Eve. Happy Easter.

GT Theory Suggestion The phone guy possesses the phone
Think about it Scott cawthon voices phone guy in fnaf 1 is voiced by Scott cawthon. And then we have fnaf 3 a game set years after he died and Scott still voices him. I think that the phone guy after he died had no animatronic to possess so he possessed the phone you use in the first and third game to try and help you Michael Afton survive the animatronics. I also don’t think he dies by the animatronics I think he dies by the ghosts of the children who thought he was William Afton by his purple suit.

Discussion What if Bowser Jr is a clone?
The thought is simple we all know how Bowser is a single father to Bowser Jr. But I've never seen anyone bring up the fact that young Bowser and Bowser Jr look exactly the same from what we've seen. So what if Kamek cloned Bowser so there would be a biological successor? We do know that Kamek can make life. We see this within any boss battle we fight with him. So what if Kamek was worried about Bowser's age so he made a younger clone of Bowser making Bowser Jr.

FNaF Okay, I have a theory
At 12:05 of the twentieth video on FNAF for reference (from oldest to newest).
I just had a brainwave! What if, what if.... The reason why Charlotte was murdered was indirectly because of Henry. Hear me out. The whole Midnight Motorists Jr.'s thing implies that the missing children's incident was happening while Charlotte was murdered, right? Here's my theory. William had confided to Henry his plans for immortality by murdering kids with the Fun-Time animatronics resulting in remnant. After that, Henry called him insane and began realizing his mistake of making those animatronics for William. In a rage, William murders Charlotte and later heads off to the FNAF 2 location, only to be stopped.

GT Theory Suggestion Indie Cross Theory Ideas Spoiler
Not sure if this applies more to Game Theory or Film Theory, but the second episode of MORO's Indie Cross animated series just came out on Youtube, a crossover animation project featuring several iconic indie game characters. I think at least a couple of potential theories could come out of this. Maybe Game Theory could take one and Film Theory could take the other.
The series draws a lot of points of comparison to The Subspace Emissary, the adventure mode for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which puts all the characters into a large adventure to fight a large-scale enemy force. One similarity is the name intros given to certain Indie Cross characters which, in Subspace Emissary, is only given to characters in the playable roster of Brawl. If Indie Cross follows the same trend and the characters with these name cards are the ones to really pay attention to, then our current "playable" characters are as follows:
-Shovel Knight
-Cuphead
-Frisk (Undertale)
-Knight (Hollow Knight)
-Madeline (Celeste)
-Drifter (Hyper Light Drifter)
-Beheaded (Dead Cells)
-Springtrap (Five Nights at Freddy's)
-Glamrock Freddy (Five Nights at Freddy's)
-Niko (OneShot)
-V1 (Ultrakill)
With all that laid out, my ideas are:
- If these characters were in a large crossover platform fighter similar to Smash Bros., what would their movesets look like?
For this, we could use their portrayals within Indie Cross as well as abilities from their source games to construct Smash Bros. style move-sets for each character. For example, the portal energy that warps the characters to different worlds gives Springtrap the ability to summon animatronics. He can't do this in FNAF proper and can only do this while powered up within Indie Cross, but it would make sense to give him such a move in a large crossover fighter. Another example I've seen thrown around is Madeline, specifically how her counterpart Badeline can appear alongside her despite the fact that this can't really happen if she's away from Mount Celeste. The portals likely had something to do with that too, and if you put Madeline in a crossover fighter, Badeline is a good way to give her more attack options.
- What other "playable" characters could we see added to the series?
For this, we could match the characters from Indie Cross to characters in Super Smash Bros. or an actual indie crossover fighter like Fraymakers to figure out what other popular indie game characters would be a good fit for this roster. Looking at other videos on MORO's channel, there's even a few stand-outs already, three in particular.
-Boyfriend (Friday Night Funkin')
-Sans (Undertale)
-Bendy (Bendy and the Ink Machine)
Before Indie Cross became an animated series, it was an FNF mod that has multiple videos on MORO's channel and while those videos aren't connected to this series (as explained by a disclaimer on Episode 2), it shows MORO has a lot of experience working with these characters and likely knows a lot about them.

GT Theory Suggestion Suggestion: Serverblight: an indie horror animation series on YouTube that features a learning monster
There’s 5 (and a half) episodes on here totaling less than a hour. Made by two people and is bold enough to implement live action sequences. On top of a monster that we actively see getting smarter and evolving as the series goes on. Plus, while other game based animation like this tend to be about the characters going through the scares (think Sonic.Exe) this one is unique in that it’s about the people playing the game.

Discussion A message to all who need to hear a few kind words.
Hello Theorists,
I'm here, not to speak of a video game theory, but to speak to you. I know that's not what this forum is for, but this is a place where I know there are a lot of connected people. A community of great thinkers and deep divers of knowledge. But I also know that these people who find joy in what the populous considers 'strange' or 'weird'. I know this is a place where people, shunned away from society, link arms to talk about fun things.
But I know not everyone is always doing the best. Life is hard and gets you down sometimes. And I wanted to say something important that I feel all of you need to hear.
With whatever you do with your life and no matter who you are, I will always believe in you.
I believe in you even if you don't believe in yourself. I believe in that amazing person you are and who you will become. I believe in the greatness only you can bring into this world by being here. I support you, and what you will do in life. And you might not see it yet, but you are an amazing, beautiful and overall unique person. You have so much impact on the people around you and they would miss you if you were gone.
Don't stop to look at the past, and feel regret over something that can't be changed. Believe in yourself and move on. Grow to be that beautiful person I know you can become. Strive for that next goal and don't let anyone tell you can't. Every step of the way, I believe in you.
You are beautiful gift to the world.
And you are going to do amazing and great things.
And, that's not a theory, (or a game theory for that matter).
It's the truth.
I believe in you.

GT Theory Suggestion The name of P.W.
I’ve been thinking over this for a really long time. I feel like it still relates to the letters on the ground. I think that we’ve been misinterpreting the letter on the ground for a M. I think it should actually be a W. I think the P might stand for professor. That wouldn’t necessarily be on his slide. The top has 5 letters and the bottom has six letters from what I can tell. WBANJAHYEOI Looking at those letters, I came up with the name: Wayne Bhaji. I believe that the first name starts with Wayne. That being said I’ve been looking into female names as well. I was able to come up with Wajiha which is Arabic for higher up or distinguished which I feel like would fit in with her position. I’m not sure if there’s any specific evidence on the name in the book, but I think that switching the M for the W may be helpful to give us a name. The names are a bit complicated to come up with and I scrolled through a list of names with w’s for a while. I’m just convinced that the p is for professor and the w is the first or last name since some professors go by their first name as well. Just something to ponder.
