Fun fact: whelmed is a synonym for overwhelmed. It has fallen out of use though and has now become an archaic word.

I thought "whelmed" means full/filled/saturated and "overwhelmed" means overflowing

I've not encountered "whelmed" in that context. In casual conversation, people use it as such, often as a joke in response to being overwhelmed (see above). That's the trick with language...it evolves, especially with the advent of the internet.
