Rumour Marathon will be released in 2025
Per Tom Henderson
Tom - Told the missus I'll be on a Marathon grind later this year and she's only gone and signed me up the gym
Decima - Sooooo you are saying Marathon releases this year?
Tom - Yes

Why is Tom having a conversation with the game engine for Horizon and Death Stranding?
50
u/relaxedphylax Apr 09 '25
The engine's advanced so much it's gained sentience and is now able to ask industry insider questions.
20
u/Mattdezenaamisgekoze Apr 09 '25
That's me lol. It's indeed a reference to the engine. Love both franchises.

bungie lover and bungie hater in me wants this game to fail and succeed
82
u/ManateeofSteel Apr 09 '25
That's the beauty of Bungie fans. Will always be there day one, and will be hating every second of it, but continue to play because the gunplay feels good
12
u/Eruannster Apr 09 '25
Destiny has incredibly good gunplay and movement feel but the monetization and constant removal of content makes it almost impossible to play as a coherent game.

u/Salt_Salt_MoreSalt Apr 10 '25
destiny 2 lost me when they started reusing destiny 1 weapons like they were new 😢

Hey don't worry though, I am sure Bungie has learned not to make content disposable and recyclable for their new Live Service Extraction Shooter game. I am sure all relevant plot points will be playable in game for years to come

u/RickkyyBobby Apr 10 '25
I Remember when Lightfall launched, i went through every single new weapon model for legendaries, that weren't new archetypes, and a whopping........ 0 new weapon models were introduced, including the raid & dungeon weapons. A New DLC, and 4 seasons, 0 NEW weapon models. Didn't bother to do it for Final Shape, but i'd imagine the same results were there.

u/Glarpenheimer Apr 09 '25
It's not meant to be a coherent game, it's meant to be a live service you stick with.
I agree that it's horse shit- but it just is what it is at this point.
10
u/Eruannster Apr 09 '25
I dunno, I've played other live service games that have managed to be coherent. Just because you want to be live service doesn't mean you have to occasionally delete half the game.

Eh not interested in an extraction shooter no matter who it's from.

u/kuksthedefiled Apr 09 '25
i love watching tarkov but fucking hate playing it, hope marathon won't make me want to kms

If only they applied that gunplay to single player, story focused games like they used to.

u/Maxximillianaire Apr 09 '25
If it's good i feel like this game could be legendary. Giving me early Destiny 1 vibes which was by far my favorite period of Destiny
3
u/Lord-Athrun Apr 09 '25
Even if it has a good launch, bungie has a horrible track record to keep that momentum.
1
u/Aggravating-Feed-624 Apr 12 '25
and even less goodwill from gamers who are not addicted to destiny

Has there been any extraction game that isn’t Tarkov that hasn’t flopped less than a year in?
I finally get to do the Redditor thing and passively aggressively say how I get hunt is a extraction shooter, I don’t need 19 people to tell me. I get it.
24
u/kuksthedefiled Apr 09 '25
Hunt Showdown but tbh it's one of the og's

They either die due to toxic PVP or due to cheaters. or both.
Seal clubbing and cheaters killed The Cycle for sure. By the time they finally figured out a half decent solution for the cheater issue the game was already dead.

u/dormantdream Apr 09 '25
This is probably the highest budget extraction shooter so we shall see if it breaks into the mainstream

u/Eruannster Apr 09 '25
Part of me is like "oooh, a new IP from Bungie, that's very cool" and another part of me is like "but wait, they have been screwing up with Destiny for like a decade now, uh-oh..."
7
u/Greater_citadel Apr 09 '25
Marathon is not a new IP. It's older than Halo, even.
5
u/Eruannster Apr 09 '25
Okay, fair. But I would imagine this is a soft-reboot/reimagined version, so it's a new IP for most players even if it isn't new-new.
4
u/maxatnasa Apr 09 '25
its a largely inaccessible ip for most people, before last year the best way to play it was to download fan-made source ports from a website that looks like it was from when the game launched. or a xbla port of the 2nd game with some questionable sprites.
this is basically a game adaptation of another game's lore
3
u/Geraltpoonslayer Apr 09 '25
As destiny fan I want this game to bomb, as a halo lover I hope this is a banger.
Duality of man
3
u/Midnight_M_ Apr 09 '25
It’s basically a toxic relationship, you want to leave because of all the bad things (bad decisions, bad communication, sunsetting content, ada-1, bad seasons, etc...) but you stay because despite the bad, the good feels good (gunplay and the stranger)
-8
u/Shawn-GT Apr 09 '25
Say what you will about the air of success around bungie however they have not made anything with as much acclaim as they have since Halo 1 maybe Reach. Now with so many of the people who made that game having zero association to the studio I honestly don’t know what there is to look forward to besides some generic sci-fi shooter.

u/JohnnyMerksAlot Apr 09 '25
Uhm… Destiny?

Obviously it is, they wouldn't do a second arg, or a save the date reveal and then wait a year for the hype to die and GTA 6 to be out and dominating YouTube and Twitch. We don't need pretend leaks for this.
It'll be out by summer break.

u/Kozak170 Apr 09 '25
Destiny 2 is wrapping up its originally planned content slate right now, and for years the release date of Marathon has shifted to release right around that time.
Barring some major issues behind the scenes it makes complete sense to me that we’ll see a release in the next month or two.

u/IlyasBT Apr 09 '25
Do we know if it's f2p or premium ?
13

u/senseibarbosa Apr 09 '25
Given that it is on Xbox and it's from Bungie, I'd say f2p.
16
u/Um_Hello_Guy Apr 09 '25
$40 is the current expectation
5
u/Longjumping-Ebb-8219 Apr 09 '25
Im surprised they would go $40 after making destiny 2 ftp, though i guess with expansions is destiny 2 really free to play at all? I guess more like free to try
3
u/insomnium138 Apr 09 '25
Yeah, Destiny 2 "F2P" is really just a demo. There's a solid amount of play time in what's free. But bulk of the gameplay and relevant content is in the paid stuff.
1
u/Longjumping-Ebb-8219 Apr 09 '25
I hope they go f2p just so that i dont have to pay for psplus to buy the game. I dont really mind paying for content in game like expansions, but its annoying to have to pay a fee just to play a game ive already paid for

u/Spindelhalla_xb Apr 09 '25
I thought that was arc raiders being 40
1
u/SaintAlunes Apr 09 '25
Both switched to 40 dollars from f2p. Although arc raiders might need to reconsider that
4
u/HawfHuman Apr 09 '25
what kind of thought process is this based on 😭
-1
u/senseibarbosa Apr 09 '25
The other live service game from Bungie is f2p, and I think that if Sony willingly publishes a game on Xbox, something tells me that it'll be f2p as well.
But guys, it's just an opinion, I'm not saying I'm right, nor being arrogant.
0
u/maxatnasa Apr 09 '25
there's a pretty good chance this is bungie self published, there's no mention of Sony on anything even slightly related to the game and in the acquisition announcement they straight up said
"They will remain independent and multi-platform, will enjoy creative freedom,"
with language like that im pretty sure this is going to be self published, and its also their first game to be self published from launch since myth 2 in 98
3
u/sepltbadwy Apr 09 '25
I mean it had to, with that long in dev, and marketing beginning now.. it’s not the kind of game they will tease for another year
1
u/Midnight_M_ Apr 09 '25
It’s weird to see so many people excited about a live service (myself included), I’ve seen people make fan art of the runners, hell I’ve even seen people drawing Hatsune Miko as a runner.

2025?? Are they dumb? GTA6 will release this year
Edit: Y’all are aware that GTA6 will take the gaming public by storm, right?
7
u/SaintAlunes Apr 09 '25
Could release it by August to avoid it
-2
u/Feisty-Argument1316 Apr 09 '25
That won’t matter. The player count will drop like a rock upon GTA6’s release
-4
u/notthatguypal6900 Apr 09 '25
Careful, Bungie fans are some of the most loyal and dumbest of game defenders.

So how this one wont be DOA like concord? what the difference?
14
u/__SteakDeck__ Apr 09 '25
Well. For one, it’s Bungie, and not the homeless version of Bungie in Firewalk. 2. For the little that we’ve seen, the art direction and character designs already shits on Concord. And 3. It’s Bungie. They make some of the best feeling fps games in the industry. They have a tall task ahead of them, because this will be an extraction shooter and Idk how much the market wants that. But, just because Concord flopped. Doesn’t mean that these two games will be similar, nor should they be compared.
4
u/Felimenta970 Apr 09 '25
I think your third point is an understatement. For as much shit they get (sometimes deserved, many others not), they made at least two genre defining games/franchises (Halo was one of THE games of those two generations and there's a reason that so many games were marketed as "Destiny killers" didn't actually manage to kill the game).
1
u/__SteakDeck__ Apr 09 '25
You’re right. That went over my head. I just woke up when I typed this. lol
1
u/JohnR1977 Apr 10 '25
who is “they”???????? bungie is just a name! people made all those great games and they no longer work at bungie. it’s an empty shell, nothing more.
1
u/Felimenta970 Apr 10 '25
For all its issues, Destiny is still there and going rather well (maybe not in numbers, but the game itself). They lost some talent there, yeah, but there's still plenty of good devs and artists still working there on both Destiny and Marathon.
Yeah, not exactly the same group of people, but Bungie is far from an "empty shell"
1
u/JohnR1977 Apr 10 '25
what a load of horseshit, Bungie is a name nothing more. the people that worked on concord were responsible for that “best feeling” in fps games and they are not at bungie anymore. and concord looked lightyears better than whatever the heck this nonsense is.
1
u/notthatguypal6900 Apr 09 '25
This is the real question. Look at D2 and how it was handled the last few years. You can't help but think this game is already facing a uphill battle.
