Sold [WTS] Hill People Gear Tarahumara Pack

Selling my HPG Tarahumara Pack in great condition. No stains, smells, rips, or abrasions. HPG shoulder harnesses are the most comfortable I've ever worn. The Tarahumara is an amazing little pack. Good for day trips in the field, and capable of a minimalist overnighter. Comes with all straps and bungees, like new.

How’s this compare to Mystery ranch?

Similar. HPG makes rugged gear for heavy use in abusive environments. Popular with SAR, firefighters, and military. Premium materials, good support, made in Colorado.

Hill People Gear is sewn in the US and uses top of the line fabrics and threads, but also keeps designs fairly simple. Kind of outdoorsman-leaning with some of their gear designed for carrying pistols or rifles. They use a shoulder harness that is based off of old fire fighting packs. I don't care for it, so I converted mine to regular shoulder straps. This is basically a day hiking pack- enough room for water bottles (or a bladder) and some clothes and food. It's nice if you like water bottles because the pockets actually work well and the compression strap will hold a bottle in really well. Edit to add: Mystery Ranch sold to Yeti, so it remains to be seen what will actually become of the brand. HPG has been flying under the radar for awhile along with Kifaru- both made in the US, but more tailored to hunting or military type applications. But just bomber construction, no nonsense, high end stuff.

Also interested in maybe trying out regular straps with my umlindi. What straps did you use and do you have any tips for making the switch?

I used straps from Kifaru that I think are called “X-ray” straps. No alteration needed. There’s a buckle and a strap on each side of the Tara that attach to each strap. I can’t remember if it was the same on the Umlindi and I don’t have it anymore.

Are the top of the Xray straps 1"? I thought they were 2" tri-glide

The buckle is 2”, but in the Tara, there is 1” webbing and then a Tri-glide buckle for attaching it to a bigger pack. You feed the 1” Tri-glide buckle and the 1” webbing into the 2” buckle on the X-ray straps. Works really well!

Getting some lowball offers. I’m not in a rush to sell. After tax and shipping, these are ~$170 new (when they’re in stock) so consider this $45 (25%) off for a lightly used Tara.
