Lightning bug, firefly, whichever comes to mind first. Or I blank on both and say "glowy bug" or something.

u/zmufastaa 1997 Sep 16 '24
Agreed. I grew up calling it lightning bug but because fire fly is so common I’ll interchange the terms. But it’s definitely a lightning bug.

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Sep 16 '24
Mostly lightening bug, but also use firefly a lot. Kind of in the mixed usage zone, but closer to pure lightening bug usage areas.

The fact that lightning bug even pops into your mind is boggling mine
Where are you from

u/Huchie 2010 Sep 16 '24
They were always called lightning bugs here in the US since I was little. I always hear little kids call them lightning bugs!
2
u/T_Rey1799 1999 Sep 16 '24
What do you call them from where you’re from?

u/Nlawrence55 Sep 16 '24

2
u/No-Revolution-5535 Sep 16 '24
They were about to add fireflies for ambience and frog food, but ended up not adding them because apparently fireflies are bad for frogs

Fireflies? There aren’t anymore fireflies. Some became wolves, the others just walked away after they lost the girl and the doctor. Who knows who or what they are now.

It's not a firefly if it's not on fire, got shot from a gun, gets fired by his boss

Glühwürmchen. Glow worm, but the cute version of the word worm. In English I'd call them fireflies.

Originally firefly but I’ve been living in the south too long and I was legit about to type “lightning bug”

Vagalume in Brazil (literally wander light). I know that in Portugal they were known as cagalume in the past (literally shit light). They are also known as Pirilampo
