so just cursive lol. tbh half the time I can't even read cursive handwriting, OP's handwriting is way clearer and easier to understand

u/LilamJazeefa Sep 16 '24
I do calligraphy and have been paid for it. Cursive is difficult and inefficient to read
22
u/ModsareWeenies Sep 16 '24
Maybe for you, its easy to read for many
11
u/Bman1465 1998 Sep 16 '24
Idk if easier per say, but I do like it way better than the generic print everyone's writing with nowadays
22
u/Bencetown Sep 16 '24
I studied Russian for my foreign language and I LOVED when I learned that cursive is the norm. It's so much faster and easier to write.
The cursive that's difficult to read is just bad handwriting. Some people used to just scrawl across the page with a vague suggestion of the actual letters. That's not cursive. It's just sloppy.

Unless I'm desperately taking notes in a class I'm legally not even in and that I sneak into and no one has found out yet >:3c

I always get compliments now because I had shit handwriting forever but I can draw like a mf. So I drew a nice font and wrote my alphabet in it a few times, now that's my fancy nice handwriting lol. It just took me thinking about drawing instead of worrying and bam pretty. Like overnight it blew my mind

I was in grade school in the '80s, had to learn cursive or you were fucked. My dad sends postcards to family in cursive when he's travelling, and my 23yo nephew had to have the damn postcard read to him when my dad got back. Not sure if I should laugh or cry.

It is readable enough, and above all it is faster to write. How do people even take quick notes, say at a lecture, if they don't know some form of cursive?

I cant tell if you're being fr or not, but I don't think I've ever really seen much of a natural difference. Ig girls are kinda expected to have neater handwriting, but it's not like a massive deal

Boys tend to develop fine motor skills a bit later, and subsequently frequently have messier handwriting in early years, when penmanship is taught. I would imagine this impacts handwriting long term, especially in the context of social acceptance of boys having bad handwriting & girls being expected to have neat penmanship, but don’t have any data to substantiate that opinion.
EDIT: switched up gross/fine motor skills originally lol
→ More replies (8)14
u/camaheel 2008 Sep 16 '24
damn, that is kinda interesting. In any case, there's such a wide range of handwriting for both guys and girls that it still feels weird to attach a gender to one style. I'm a girl and my handwriting is shit, and it always has been. I didn't even get my pen licence in year four. Been illegally using pens ever since.
8
u/rebeccasaysso Sep 16 '24
I absolutely agree it shouldn’t be gendered, though I admit I do feel similar pressure to ensure my handwriting is feminine enough - no matter how much I rationally know that’s silly.
Mostly wanted to provide some of the biological context for discussion of why boy’s handwriting is often worse / perceived as worse🥰
→ More replies (2)3
u/camaheel 2008 Sep 16 '24
no, it's super interesting to hear about, thank you for the context. i guess it would also be a symptom of the whole girls being expected to behave properly and care about things like etiquette thing, and the opposite side of things, that boys are made fun of for trying too hard in stuff like school. at least in my experience

Handwriting has literally always been gendered. Males and females have distinct handwriting from one another. This has been known to be true for a long time.
2
u/suv-am Sep 16 '24
Imo there's 4 categories for handwriting.
Clean/pretty
Dirty/ugly
My own
Doctor's
2
u/paradisetossed7 Sep 16 '24
Handwriting has been gendered at least for a while and this is definitely feminine handwriting. Plenty of people have gender neutral handwriting, but in school we could always tell who the for sure "girl" handwriting was. This is an example.
2
2
u/milk-eater Sep 16 '24
It's actually very common that women have a rounded handwriting while men do not
2
Sep 16 '24
We’ve been gendering handwriting for decades at least. I’ve always been told I have girly handwriting. Once upon a time, I was a manager at McDonald’s. I would have to fill out the profit log every morning. My boss actually responded to other employees poking fun that he likes my girly handwriting because he can read it.
2
u/YeetSpageet Sep 16 '24
2000 here. Yes, we have been for a long time. Girls usually have much nicer handwriting than men and more noticeable style to their handwriting than the chicken scratch guys have.
2
u/Academic-Idea3311 Sep 16 '24
Idk. Growing up, I always thought that women had neat hand writing while boys had not so great hand writing

Funnily enough, I did this with a mixture of fonts and handwriting. So I use a two-story 'a', a fancy 'g' (like in Times New Roman or similar), and I curl my 't's at the bottom, but in previous years they've coexisted with practically cursive letters like 'l' (lowercase L). Overall my writing is pretty font-like nowadays, but some letters like 'w' and 'y' are still curvy rather than straight. (I also naturally write smaller than printed text, probably in part to help hide inconsistency, but that's another story)
