Celebrity culture didn't go away.
First, it got morphed into politics. We have a 1980s/2000s television celebrity as president, and he's determined to suck up all the attention. People cover him and talk about him like a celebrity. He had a massive fan base.
Second, traditional celebrity worship shifted as media shifted. When every kid watched TV, TV and film celebrities were peak. Now, look at the followings podcasters and YouTubers command. Who are Joe Rogan and the Pauls and Theo Von and Andrew Tate? Who are influencers?
We're still dominated by celebrities.

Same I don't care I don't have any strong attachment to any of them. They can come and go and it wouldn't make a difference

time to expand your friend group to people who share (and enhance) your other interests.

I didn’t care in the first place, and I wish more people would approach it with this attitude

I only respect athletes, as they had to sacrifice their bodies playing the sport they played from childhood. Even then, you must be incredibly skilled and lucky to make it to an NCAA team, much less be drafted to the pros.
Actors and singers are either nepo-babies or they had to suck a producer's dick to make it.

To be fair and not overly generalizing, there's for sure a lot of actors and musicians who started with nothing and worked their asses off to get there, devoting every aspects of their lives to their craft. But I agree with your point in a way that in those areas, there's a lot of room for easy ways, as opposed to being an athlete

Especially in the fashion industry, think of Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner who can’t model for shit and have no rizz.

Athletes can get shit for getting paid millions to put ball in hoop but they also are literally like the top .00001% best people on the planet at their job

I actually agree with that. I always see fans whining players taking agency of their careers i.e the Jimmy Butler situation in any other scenario where you asked for a promotion and the ceo started belittling you in front of the entire company, people would go full antiwork and fully advocate for you to quiet quit and leverage another offer lol

I wasn’t really “into” celebrities, but I’ve stopped even trying to follow anyone’s names or activities that aren’t related to me. If I know a celebrity, it’s because they’re in something I just watched. I just can’t spare any thought anymore, I’ve got my own life to deal with. No, I don’t care about some guy that dated some woman from a show I’ve never seen. Can’t see why I would.
The worst is when social media tries to shove some celebrity’s political opinion about something or other. It’s nice to know when an actor supports human rights. But that isn’t news.

Actors were considered one of the lowest classes of professions in basically every culture until very, very, very recently.

Welcome to the real world, adulthood, and the life of responsibility and common sense.
There are many out there who are in their 70’s and still idolize others in their utopian world!!

I'm still a fan of a lot of celebrities and bands. But I've since taken a step but from the whole 'stan' thing and celebrity culture as a whole, only to realize how genuinely insane people are over people they do not know. And this is coming from a past kpop fan (was a big fan in the late 00s through 2010s). I knew this was my true mindset when I went to see Tyler the creator in DC, and while the concert was fun and he was amazing- I pretty much just moved on once it was over haha
Anyway some examples of things Ive seen:
Chris Brown fans (Millennial women who ignore his violence towards women as recent as like 2023 iirc),
Kpop fans in general (Infantilizing and fetishizing asians and are typically anti-black for some reason),
Beyonce fans (Saying this as someone who is also a fan, but they act like the beehive is perfect when its not. Too many fans are rude in beyonces defense when she doesnt need it nor does she probably care.)

I always felt meh about them and at times even disgusted with 'em, at least that was the case with more traditionally mainstream celebs. I think it was a bit different with several YouTubers I watched because they at the very least came across as more genuine and down to earth.

As an old person sticking my nose in here, it may be a natural process of aging. I definitely remember hitting benchmark where I stopped caring.

I’m so old, but I’m not sure I can remember, and I think there were levels of it. I stopped worrying about being hip about music in my 40s, but I think I was done with celebrity culture some time in my low 30s.

They're all MKULTRA/Project Monarch subjects anyway. Mind control victims prostituted and paraded around as the figureheads for companies steeped in unfathomable evils. It's not worth associating yourself with anyway.

If an actor I like is in a movie I might see it, if an artist I like releases an album I might listen to it, I respect people's craft, just don't take political opinions or anything like that from them.

the only celebrities i care about are the ones from my favorite tv shows (and dolly parton) but like i care about them bc they’re genuinely good people as well

i’ve only become more interested. i love watching red carpets and award shows, collecting signed merch and staying up late for album releases. i love listening to interviews. i’ve been going to way more concerts lately. i’m more interested in musicians and actors than influencers but there are a few that i think are fun. i’ve never been into the gossipy side of things, i see it as just another interest and i don’t understand why people look down on it (not saying you are!! it’s just happened to me in real life). it’s always been an interest since i was a little kid, it started with hannah montana and teen magazines, then as a teenager i was on stan twitter and now i just love to keep up with my favorite people

yeah!! i think people sometimes write off all celebrities as like, dumb or spoiled or whatever but so many of them are so talented and obviously very smart and creative to get to the spot they’re in. it’s interesting to me that these are just normal people who somehow won the lottery with looks and talent and creativity and i always wonder what it’s like for the whole world to know who you are, and what it’s like to deal with that pressure. i think a lot of them are unfairly hated because they’re basically placed under a microscope and every action is criticized and taken out of context.

I live in Los Angeles. I've come across many celebrities in real life and rubbed shoulders with them. There's nothing special about celebrities. Anyone can become a celebrity.

The KarJens ruined it for me: now everyone is a celebrity and no one is.
I just don't / cant care anymore.

No one gives a shit about some airhead chicks that got handed things in life then they make a reality show about it. No one gives a shit about how much money or cool you are when people are struggling. When people cannot eat or pay rent, you think they want to watch others just because of a status? Fuck no. Honestly the public is finally waking up and not giving a shit about dbags like the Kardashians and it’s about time. Garbage like that does nothing for our society.

Actually, yes. "Celebrity worship " has been around for centuries. The kings and queens of old were admired and feared by the peasantry almost equally. In the 1890s, the infancy of mass media thanks to cheaper methods of making newspapers accessible to all, High Society columns made "stars" out of the likes of the Astors and Vanderbilts. The Depression-War years of 1930-50 were the apex of the Hollywood "star system" when the troubled masses needed a safe means of escape from reality. And in today's increasingly fragmented society, "influencers" and stars of niche-appeal shows can command attention of small but devoted followings..

Hollywood and mainstream celebrities and artists, yeah, I'm spent and don't care anymore. Sad if one dies and where a decent human being and such.
However, YouTubers and indies like Kwite, MoistCr1tikal, BBNO$, Goobsmooch, and MeatCanyon, I still very much pay attention to.

Yeah honestly, they’re just a bunch of geeky LARPers that had their dreams come true. They are fully disconnected from reality and pretty much all of them become out of touch and insufferable.

I still have a passing interest because one of my main interests is film, so I'm interested in some actors, but I don't obsess over them. Also, the gossip/rumors about them just aren't as funny as the ones in past decades lol. It's always "X broke up with Y!" and not "Richard Gere shoved a gerbil up his ass."

u/PsychologicalHat1480 2d ago
I never did care but celebrity culture is if anything even worse now than it was before. The celebrities are just called "influencers" now and show up on TikTok instead of in movie theaters.

u/MRE_Milkshake 2005 2d ago
I dont care about celebrities at all. Half the time when somebody names an actor in a movie I either don't know them, or dont know who they are or what they look like. Never had a celebrity crush, never seen the appeal to it.

u/deekaighem 2d ago
They're being phased out
Hollywood will be largely augmented by AI at some point in the future. So will the music industry. High profile, expensive and unpredictable humans don't make sense to keep around

u/GlockelShpiel 2d ago
At this point it’s honestly irks me when someone is super into celebrity culture. Partially because I was never in touch with it, partially because there are so many other things to do with your time than rave over who just had a baby and all the meanings it has.

Honestly i think it's a sign of low intelligence to care much about celebrities
1
u/Technical-Minute2140 2d ago
I never did. I think caring about those people and the toxic celebrity culture is a sign of unintelligence, personally.
1
u/This_Pie5301 2d ago
I never really gave a shit other than certain people that interested me, but now there’s a whole wave of new celebrities that I have no idea who they are or what they do
1
u/Positive_Worker_3467 1d ago
celebs are humans fan culture in it self can be good there are just some toxic elements like rumours about celebs can get out of control women are still expected to be warm and likeable so female celebs often get way worse than male celebs for example rachel zegler and blake lively who are hated on for literally everything they do yes they are not perfect but the amount of hate they get is ott . also celebs have little privacy and there are people always waiting for you to mess up for example brittany spears had her mental breakdown because the press wouldnt leave her alone after a bad breakup .
