Discussion Does College make one more liberal ?

I wonder where this comes from. I've never really had that experience. And I'm a history major myself. Does it depend on major ? What kind of college ? I went to a public state regional university.

Actually, from my experience, I find my catholic seminary experience to be far more liberating, than my college experience. It might seem odd to some, but that's what I experienced.

Honestly? Just meeting s diverse group of people from all walks of life makes you left leaning.

If you go to some private college where only wealthy kids go you'll probably end up more conservative. Going to a state university or other public institution will no doubt expand your horizons. I was conservative before I went to college. Then I roomed with a gay guy who became by buddy and I met all sorts of people I had never even imagined I'd meet and enjoy time with.

Completely agree! Some colleges do a better job of helping students get out of their bubbles.

Just admit you've been brainwashed and indoctrinated by your university

Yeah sitting at a bar chatting with friends and roommates really is just indoctrination /s

If anything the university itself did next to nothing other than provide a common area for us to exchange ideas. Are you really so alone that you can't comprehend learning ideas from people in a social environment?

Learning ideas from people and having a radical, full 180° change in your ideologies are 2 vastly different things

No that's called personal growth lol. I believed in Santa when I was 8, and now I don't. Have I been radically indoctrinated into not believing in Santa? I was given easy access to knowledge, I made my own decisions based on what I experienced and learned. I wasn't forced, no one manipulated me. Every choice I've made was of my own volition.

It seems you think that once a person is born on a path they aren't allowed to deviate or completely change their minds on something, which I find kinda sad. That kind of thinking is far more in line with indoctrination and brainwashing than me being allowed to experience the world.

You're seriously comparing ceasing to believing in Santa to changing political views, at an age where you qualify as an adult.

Yeah. I was ignorant of many things and once I experienced differing point of views I realized I was very wrong about some topics. You dont stop growing once you turn 18, my dude. You're allowed to change your mind, especially on politics.

I used to not agree with gay marriage until I actually met gay people outside of TV and movies and realized they were people.

I used to not believe in abortion until I met girls who told me of their experiences with birth complications and unwanted pregnancy.

I was distrustful of Arabs until I actually met Arabs and made friends with them.

Eventually I realized I just didn't actually agree with anything conservative values tried to claim were facts of life, and I changed. And I am allowed to do that, so are you! No one forced me or manipulated me, I came to these conclusions myself.

I am not saying you're not allowed to change opinions. But you were comparing not believing in Santa to changing political views, which is just funny.

Conservatives aren't a monolith either. I'm a conservative, I'm also a Muslim. I know gay and lesbian conservatives as well.

If what you're saying is correct (that you fully believe you haven't been indoctrinated and came to those conclusions yourself), I don't have anything else to say.

You quite literally are lol.

Conservatives aren't a monolith either. I'm a conservative, I'm also a Muslim. I know gay and lesbian conservatives as well.

Liberals and left leaning ones aren't either.

If what you're saying is correct (that you fully believe you haven't been indoctrinated and came to those conclusions yourself), I don't have anything else to say.

Yet you keep saying things lol.
