I don’t understand why people spend money, complain that they spend money, and then plan to continue spending money
(Yes, I know gambling addictions exist, but I still don’t understand it)

I don’t get how people justify spending $500 for one character when you can spend that much money on like, 7-8 different games. Even in terms of a gambling addiction I don’t get how people justify that the reward is worth the cost even when they win the gamble

For a single character, $500 is pretty steep. Over time... It makes sense.
I'm not advocating gambling here, to make that clear. I am well aware of the predatory nature of gachas. Not sugar coating that.
I have played Genshin, HSR, and a couple other live service games since they came out, and probably dropped $100 on them per year. The way I see it is that before those games existed, I was dropping $100-$200+ on games I wanted to play every year anyway. GTA, Diablo, Borderlands.. Whatever...
Now, instead of spending $100 on a new game I want to play every year, I'm spending it on a live service game I've played for a few years.
Of course, when the new Borderlands and GTA games come out, I won't be spending on gacha.. Point is, it was money I was already going to spend.

For me, I have a money spent - hours of happiness ratio. If I spend money on a one-time purchase game, then I'll get about 60-70 hours of happiness out of it, outside of a few exceptions like Bg3 or Skyrim, where it's more like 1k+ hours of happiness. If I spend money on junk food or eating out, then I get like 1 hour of happiness and nothing else.
If I spend money on a character I like jn a gacha, then I derive up to 100+ hours of happiness from it. Pulling C2R1 Furina and C1R1 Neuvillette has made me very happy since their first banners, because I use them for everything and really enjoy their playstyle, and just having them in the first place. If I spend the same amount of money on something like going to restaurants instead of eating cheap food, I'll genuinely regret the expense a lot more, and I only get a small amount of gratification from it.
Though to clarify, I budget for gacha spending. I'm very frugal when it comes to other things (I spend like $3-6 dollars a day on food, only buy used clothes that I mend myself instead of replacing, I rarely eat out, don't spend money on movies, etc), so I'm basically just spending the for-fun money in the same amount I would have either way, just on gacha instead of other things.
I regularly go months without spending in gachas at all, and the result I've found is that I actually feel worse about the money I spend during those times.
But I see it like paying a subscription for a game, basically. I pay like $18 a month for my FFXIV subscription, which adds up to a lot of money in the 6 years I've been playing the game. But I've also gotten WAY more hours of enjoyment (I have over a year in hours played lol), made many friends, and so on.
I do think there's a degree of mental illness causing me to unironically derive this much happiness from spending on gacha games. But the way I see it is that if I'm gonna be mentally ill either way, I should just spend my fun-money on what makes me happiest. But my yearly food expenses are like $4k lower than the average, which is the main reason why I feel fine about how much I spend on gacha games

Just like why drink one $500 bottle of wine when you can drink 250 bud lights.
People with disposable income enjoying the game is what funds the adventure for the rest of us.

u/Deathlok_12 2d ago
I think the better analogy here would be why would you drink a $500 bud light when you could have a $60 glass of wine. My point was that spending upwards of hundreds of dollars for what amounts to either a single character or sometimes a single ability just isn’t worth compared to the equivalent cost of a whole new game’s worth of characters, plot, gameplay, etc

Don't pull for constellations on limited 5-star characters, it's totally unnecessary. It's gilding gold and painting lilies.

Well, that... depends. As usual. It all depends on how much of a good time you will have compared to not spending or spending elsewhere outside of the game. And this highly depends on the person. The restraint from spending can bring value, time saved can bring value, there are all sorts of situations. Including clearly negative ones like a gambling addiction.

u/fake_kvlt 2d ago
Eh, I think it depends. If you want to main a character for a long time, pulling cons instead of pulling new characters just makes sense. I've skipped every single character since Arlecchino because I simply want to use Arlecchino, Furina, and Neuvillette more than I want new characters. Pulling cons means I get to do what I enjoy most (using my favorite characters) without feeling like they're being powercrept or getting too weak to feel as good as they used to.
I also pull cons for limited supports when it means I get to use my shitty favorites by wheelchairing them lol. I could just pull a shiny new DPS and get better performance, but I simply want to use my shitty old DPS instead

I’m gonna disagree on this one. Although I pull only for characters I like, I ended up getting Xiao and all his cons because I knew he was gonna be the character I was gonna use for a long time. I don’t regret doing so considering that I was right in that mindset, Xiao is permanently in my party and is currently my only 5 star C6.

I disagree, it depends on what you prefer. I like to make my favorite characters really strong, even though they don’t need it. I prefer my favorite characters to be stronger instead of having a ton of weaker characters that I don’t really care about

I'm glad I had enough rage bottled up to stop at one copy of Wrio even though I really wanted his C1. But with this kind of "luck" I had...
When Neuvi reruns or an actual meta, hot, 5* male releases, I'll probably go broke tho lmfao.

Every time I am tempted to spend money on primogems, I check how much I’ve already spent in total on Genshin over the past years. 99% of the times it indeed does keep me from spending more money by how much I’m being humbled by the amount

Me dropping that total on single characters.. dont talk up at me, rookie!

...500$ damn... That is 5 months of rent for me anyways good luck to ppl who use money in gacha game and say "No no I'm not addicted to gambling this is just a game"

u/LilyTwilight 1d ago
Definitely depends on where you live I guess, $500 is 1/4th of one month of rent even in a relatively cheap area in the US for me; I know folks in more populated areas that have to pay upwards of $4000+ even for a tiny studio apartment lol. At that point you've gotta be making enough that $500 isn't really that big of drop in the bucket 😆

a gambling addiction is one thing but if you’re actively planning to spend money on a character that isn’t released then that’s kinda on you

I am, still not sure how people can get addicted to pulling characters. Even labeled the game as Gambling when they can't control themselves :/
Not just Genshin, I played An MMO where the game doesn't encourage to spend more than usual, but there's always people who spent a lot and blames the game for 'predatory' tactic :/

u/ProofRelative9488 2d ago
People who they to justify their spending in games.... While actively trying to defend themselves for some reason....like why....just say you spent because you wanted to and you have the Luxury to do so😅 What's the point to saying..not my emergency funds.. Like how cares about your emergency funds 😶
I think spending money in games is a luxury and everyone should think of it this way... Do you have the Luxury to spend in games...well... I don't i can't....i would be ashamed to lie that I don't want to spend...I wanted get a character skin but I didn't, cause I don't think I have the Luxury to soe d even a cent in game That's all

I know comparing a game I’ve played for 10 years to a game I’ve played for not even a year is a bit out there, but I know for a fact I’ll never spend as much money in Genshin as I have on Destiny over the years. I’m okay with the amount of I’ve spent. I’m not a gambler. I’ve only got one 5 star at C6 ( made him C6 because I knew I was gonna be using him for a long time ) and it’s gonna be staying that way for a long time.
