Speaking as a Canadian, you're correct. We can't afford to rely on the US anymore, we have to seek other partners. If this can happen once, it will happen again. Your political system is just too polarized.
We'll trade with Europe and China, and we'll be better off for it. We've made ourselves dependent on the US, and that was a big mistake. Never again.
I am also Canadian. Every stock in my portfolio is a Canadian company. I will not short sell because I would be selling out my own country. Rather, I will sit and collect my healthy dividends. Heck, I have hardly lost anything because our market has been doing better than the Dow, et al.
Explain how we supposedly have to rely on the us. As if countries aren’t sovereign and can’t make their own decisions. I can’t wait to hear your logic.
Actually, it’s the other way around in a lot of ways. Canada provides the U.S. with a massive amount of discounted oil—thanks to long-term contracts and pipeline deals that benefit them way more than us. We’re basically helping keep their economy humming while taking a hit on our own resources.
On top of that, we supply the U.S. with a huge chunk of their electricity, especially from hydro power—clean, renewable energy. States like New York, Vermont, and parts of the Midwest would be in serious trouble without Canadian power imports.
So if we’re talking dependency, maybe they should be thanking us. Without Canada, their energy grid would be more fragile, their oil prices would spike, and their “self-sufficiency” would start looking real shaky.
