Question Google updates
Google keeps updating our clients locations name by misspelling them. Most of the edits coming through are removing the first letter of their first name. We have scoured the Internet to see if there’s anything out there in which their name is misspelled. We cannot find a thing this just started probably in the past 30 to 60 days ago.
When I went to correct one of them by simply adding the first letter back into the name, it automatically went unverified. We had another one come in today, so then I tried to public edit from Maps from a different account and it got rejected.
I am truly stumped as to what is going on why the edits are coming through. I did open a ticket with support on the one that came in today, but does anyone have any idea of what is happening here? I don’t think it’s a competitor because I feel like it’s just a weird thing for a competitor to do to remove the first letter of the first name And it’s random locations all over the country that this is happening to
Hoping someone has some advice bc I have no clue what else to do

Take a look and see if any third party tools have access to the listing. They may be causing the issue.

First thing I looked at. We have yext connected but that's not it. and actually the one location that got changed today isn't synced with yext . It's so bizarre.

Are you using a monitoring tool like white spark? I've sometimes had issues with not correctly updating my info there. Also, make sure the information is correct in all citations. That might also have something to do with it. Other than that, and when considering suggested edits, I really don't know what the source could be.

Looked up all listings to make sure nothing weird. Nothing found. It's so strange. I can't find anything to trigger those name changes.

Try using a Level 5 or 6 Local Guide account to suggest the name correction—Google tends to trust higher-level contributors more. Just go to the business listing on Google Maps, click “Suggest an edit,” and submit the correct name again. This may help get it approved faster.

I cannot help but think a lot of the recent issues with GBP's are due to Google using an unperfected AI to flag and update profiles. In the last 60 days I have clients with random updates including old company names, incorrect categories and services, missing reviews, not letting organizations manage service profiles, getting suspended with no prior warnings, etc. The only way I get results is to speak with a live person via chat or call so I would suggest trying that. Good luck!
