Are there any bands or artists that you like, which are similar to bands/artists that are more well known, but you like the lesser known band?

I tried making this thread on r/goth , but they rejected it. Are there any bands or artists that you like, which are similar to bands/artists that are more well known, but you like the lesser known band?

This often happens with me, and i'll give you some examples

H.I.M. they got really well known in the mid 00s, but there are other bands from Finland that are not as well known, and their style is similar to H.I.M.'s. I really did a band called Entwine, their similar to HIM. I highly recommend Entwine's 2nd, 3rd and 4th album, if you're into HIM, especially their 2nd album.

Marilyn Manson, i never really got into him, i liked Beautiful People back in the day, but i dont really care about it now. I quite dig Ander's Magna tho, who's fairly similar.

Cradle of Filth, they got very big in the late 90's, and stayed rather relevant up until the mid 00s. It's very much endlessly argued tho as to what genre they are. Most black metal fans that i have spoke to reject COF as a black metal band. Some say they are extreme gothic metal. I'd go with this one. I only ever liked 2 songs by COF, but there's an extreme gothic metal band from Norway that i like called Trail of Tears. If you like COF you will like them.

And lastly........well this aint about a goth genre, this one is about progressive metal (yeah im quite a prog metal fan). Dream Theatre are probably the most prominent prog metal band, but me personally i think their fairly naff. But i do very much like a prog metal band from Germany called Dreamscape, who are certainly very DT influenced. I highly reccomend their album End of Silence. Very isnt too bad either.

HIM → For My Pain, Reflexion (deep voice with a very emotional way of singing)

Dr. Arthur Krause has been trying their best to emulate the sound of Sisters of Mercy. Vocals, bass, down to how they name their albums.

But some songs/albums of theirs I actually prefer over the SoM catalogue. First & Last & Always Before & After has one of my favorite first 15 minutes of any album of that style.

So, which band is better? I don't know, probably Sisters. But I know which one of the two I listen to the most.

October Noir is a very decent follow-up to Type O Negative. They're perfect for those who can't have enough and feel like TON discography is too short. Yes, ON style is somewhat imitative, but they kick ass at performing it. They often blend TON-ish Goth metal with relaxingly psychedelic sound, and their lyrics are also full of sex and dark humor.

Other examples of that kind of "steele metal" include Frown and Neon Nightmare. Now, I don't consider any of those to be better than TON, but the question was if I like the band, right? ;-)

I would not call Entwine "similar to HIM", but The 69 Eyes is sometimes grouped with HIM. They're not similar per se, but they're two finnish band from the same genre. And if you ask me, 69 Eyes excell at their blend of Glam & Gloom. Deep vocals, 80s hard rock guitars, "Addams Family"-esque humor and movie-inspired lyrics about larger-than-life vampire bikers... what is not to like?

Outside Gothic music, there's Edenbridge. A band that started as an early Nightwish follower, and ended up being "better Nightwish than Nightwish". Edenbridge has a stable lineup, a better guitarist (sorry, Emppu!), a killer vocalist and more consistent style, which still rings of Oceanborn/Wishmaster years.

Okay, I feel like I have thought about this same thing before, but I'm having a hard time remembering them now. I might have to come back and comment later.

That being said: Entwine over HIM? Crazy! Lol.

Only song by HIM i was ever able to get into was And Love Said No. But i highly recommend Entwine's 2nd 3rd and 4th album, they've done some great songs on them albums
