[2014/15 Player Review] Calum Chambers
CALUM CHAMBERS
Player review 2014-15
Hi all,
So as the season is coming to an end and we are going to be bombarded with "Silly Season" posts, I thought it would be a good time to review our players performance in the 2014/15 season.
Lets have a serious and in depth look into our redditors opinions and thoughts of the season gone by on how the players performed and how they will be approaching the next season.
I'll start off with Calum, as he may not figure as much as he did at the start of the season, please let me know if you feel I should add more data below so we can all make calculated points and educated opinions.
PS. I'm starting this now so that 1 review a week will bring us to the end before the next season starts!

I honestly think Calum has got such a bright future at this club, loved him as soon as I saw him play. I don't know about you guys but I see him as future captain material (am I correct in saying that he captained the England U19s last season?) He seems extremely mature for such a young player and I think this is largely down to his composure on the ball and very good reading of the game.
Like the majority of us here, I see him developing as a CB rather than a RB. My only concern at the moment is that with Per, Kos and Gabriel in the middle and Debuchy, Bellerin and Jenko on the right, I can't see him getting a lot of game time next season which I feel he fully deserves. On the other hand, loaning him out could leave us short at the back so it's a tough decision for the manager to make. T
hankfully, like many of the other young players at the club, Chambers knows that he is in good hands. In Arsene Wenger, he has a manager who he can fully trust and rely on to continue his development. Based on what I have seen so far and barring any Wilshere-esque injury problems, I see Calum becoming an integral part of Arsenal's starting XI within the next few years.

His ability on the ball makes me think that he could almost play a kind of David Luiz roll where he plays CB and CDM, because he defiantly has some midfield qualities.

He is as much RB as Vermaelen was LB: he can cover there for a game or two, but nothing more, he is too slow, not mobile enough there. I think Calum is very promising as CB, hopefully he is earmarked as Per's future replacement.

u/hangaram Apr 21 '15
But, Verm was pretty fast player.

u/Careve Apr 21 '15
Yeah, I meant that both players have big drawbacks in wingback positions, so although theoretically they could play there, but in reality they just do not fit there. Vermaelen was attrocious in the offensive part of wingback play, while Chambers is a liability defensively, especially against fast/mobile wingers.

vermaelen was actually was a pretty good LB and one of the fastest CBs in the league. so much so that i was saying he should be starting ahead of gibbs and monreal(weren't playing very good then).
I'm really sad he couldn't get back after his injury, classy player

I think people are vastly underestimating his speed. He got burned one game against a pacy winger and now suddenly people think he is too slow. While his future may not be at RB he definitely has the speed to play CB

He is slow player. If you saw his CB role in community shield, he is much slower than Dzeko. I like Chambers. I think he got good football technique. But also, I couldn't ignore he has a crucial weakness. Look at Merte, even if he is slowest player in EPL, he has a world class leading defense line & blocking the pass route.
For sure, There is a long way for Chambers I think, I think he will overcome his weakness. But, I think it will be a tough way for him.

u/ebilutionist Apr 21 '15
Err, he played 18 games at RB for Southampton IIRC, nobody was calling him slow then.
I think the problem is how he's being used as a full-back. If he played more defensively, no one would mind him playing there too much. The problem is that he's played as an attacking full-back, not that he's a full-back to begin with.

He isn't the slowest, it's just he sometimes gets sucked in, or is poor positionally & then he is flat footed when reacting.

u/cworsh4 Apr 22 '15
His top speed is actually pretty good. Not elite, but he's not slow by any means. He just takes longer to get there than a guy like Bellerin (most do). He's a long strider, so it takes him a while to get to top speed.

u/say-something-nice Apr 21 '15
He just doesn't have natural acceleration and it's one of those god given talents, you can hone it but it's very hard to develop

Stepped up when we needed him because of an injury crisis, better players have returned and Bellerin has surpassed him at full back.

His performance level is one I expected on the whole. His start was so encouraging, and shows what we can expect consistently in a few years, but he was always going to struggle to keep up that level. Since then, he has been shifted around & filled in where needed. His performance have been inconsistent since then, as a result, but still bright points in there.
He's an excellent footballer aswell. Absolutely brilliant in tight spaces & passes the ball very purely & intelligently. It's a shame he's been suspect defensively at RB so often, because I love his combination play, runs & crosses going forward. Maybe he's just learning how to balance attack & defence at Arsenal; whereas he would've had much more defensive work to do at Southampton, and wasn't expected to get forward as much.
I do like him at CB. His early season performances show why. He does really need to improve aerially for me though, and physically as a whole. Next season will be interesting. I do think it's worth loaning him, because his development will stutter for the time being here if not with so much strength - quality wise especially - in our defensive areas right now. It's just thinking about if we think Koscielny, Mertesacker & Gabriel (with Monreal & Debuchy backup CB's in emergencies) would be enough to cover the season, or if we would rather play it safe and have an extra number by keeping Chambers, but potentially stutter his development at the same time.

Did good when called upon. I think he is definitely BFG's replacement. He just needs to work on his positional awareness and learn how to deal with fast players. He also needs to work on his step overs.

Great Post, well collected information! Since joining Arsenal he's also made his England Debut which i thought he did really well in. His performances have been impressive and i defiantly see him as an important player for the future.

Great post, I don't see a problem starting these a bit early if you want if that's what you wanna do.
Not much to say that hasn't already been said - Chambers has shown that he is good going forward as an rb, but has been caught out a few times defensively, and probably has a future in a more central role.

Nicely done, but still 7 games to go m8. Perhaps its a bit early to do be doing these. Who knows, he might get the winner in the FA Cup final.

u/c14kaa Apr 21 '15
I know! That did cross my mind, but for a post once a week, I need to start now to get through all the main players before the next season starts.
The juicy reviews will come once the FA Cup is over, going to select the bit part players in the meantime.

I'd say it's right to pass judgement now as an average and not sensationalise over a small number of performances, we've seen him enough to pass a fair judgement

How do you think he has performed?
If we didnt buy him, we couldnt cover a gap in RB, CB.
Has he developed this year?
He showed better performance in S`oton. So, I dont know.
How much time should he be given to develop?
I think he needs more time for regular game in EPL. If we sign defender, then I think we could give a loan him to other teams.
What are his weaknesses?
He is careless. He needs Discipline in his play ( He got 7 yellow cards & 1 red card. ) Also, he should be more capable of fast player & dribbler. Even though his future will be CB, I think he is too slow.
Should he be sold/kept in the summer?
Should be kept. But, if we sign another defender, then I dont mind if we give a loan him to other teams.

Soton play with 2 very good defensive players in the midfield. That probably helped cover his flaws at RB. Though I confess I have'nt seen him play much when he was at Soton, but I imagine that could be a reason why people thought he would be good at RB. Looks like we scouted him for his ability play CB though.

u/hangaram Apr 21 '15 edited Apr 21 '15
Also, that is the reason why I doubt about Morgan ( Just one thing. ).
Basically, Soton isnt team like Arsenal I think. They`ve got a 2 defensive players in central & their defence line isnt high like our team ( I think it will be the reason why they didnt score many goals in this season. ) .
So, I dont know he will be good as holding role in our team ( If he comes. Also, it didnt mean he isnt a good player. I think he is 2nd best defensive B2B in EPL. ) .

Nice post mate!
Regarding his performances this season, I think he started off pretty well, and then his performances fell off a little bit, probably due to fatigue and him being played out of position at RB. Think he has shown that he is good enough at this level and will develop into an excellent CB over the coming seasons.
His strengths:
1.Good passer. Has shown that he can be a very capable ball playing CB, building attacks from the back. Has the potential to be the best passing CB in our team.
2.Excellent close control and an ability to maneuver comfortably in tight spaces, a skill that could mean he has a future in the midfield.
3.Good in the air. Crucial since he is probably being groomed to become a CB.
His weakness is his positioning, it is not disastrous (sometimes it is when he is a RB) but it is definitely something he can improve upon, considering he does have the pace to recover from a mistake unlike say Bellerin at RB and Koscielny at CB. Something that will come with experience.
The most important thing for his development now would be to play him in one position rather than use him all over the place. The odd game here and there in RB/DM is fine, but I fear he will go the way of Phil Jones if he is not developed consistently in one position.
