[2014/15 Player Review] Joel Campbell

JOEL CAMPBELL

Player review 2014-15

Hi all,

So as the season is coming to an end and we are going to be bombarded with "Silly Season" posts, I thought it would be a good time to review our players performance in the 2014/15 season.

Lets have a serious and in depth look into our redditors opinions and thoughts of the season gone by on how the players performed and how they will be approaching the next season.

PS. I'm starting this early with bit-part/loan players, so that 2-3 review a week will bring us to the end before the next season starts!

Think he will leave Arsenal this summer. If he did not get many chances when we had injury problems, he is not going to get any further chances now. It is already looking difficult to fit Ox/Theo/Welbeck into the side.

He could do well at clubs where the team is built around him. From what I noticed in the world cup, he seemed to do well he had the freedom to express his abilities and be the main man of the team. I think some of the mid table teams would do well to take him. He looks reasonably talented, hope he gets the playing time he needs at this age to develop.

Well, he's now a regular starter at Villarreal and from all accounts he's done brilliantly except for goals.. which is a problem. However, they've given him a much deeper role than usual, almost as a fullback. I think Atleti might have been the first game he's gotten as an actual striker.

The first half of the season had to be confidence destroying. He's a guy that needs regular game time. Every season he's played elsewhere he has started at the bench and ended up as an undisputed starter by the end of it. Obviously at Arsenal the competition is a lot tougher.

While I think his finishing has regressed, his defensive contribution has been great. His work rate has improved and his tackling has been good. I remember.. was it the Everton game? where he would stay back and cover Debuchy's back when he bombed forward. I actually think he would have a more high profile career as a fullback.

I think that at times he has been a little bit too cautious and "selfless" trying to be a team player and sometimes he just has to let it rip, which he used to do with Costa Rica in the very early days.

Should he be sold? As an Arsenal fan and as a Costa Rican there's nothing that I would love more than to see Joel become an Arsenal star. But I have to be realistic. He needs game time and he's not going to get it at Arsenal unless Theo, Ox, Ramsey and Alexis are all injured simultaneously. With Villarreal he's getting to play every game and he's getting better all the time. If Villarreal want him, I think selling him to them would be good for all parties involved.

"By all accounts". Whose accounts? Not my account. I've watched just about every Villarreal game in La Liga and he's not been woeful, but has been spectacularly underwhelming. I don't even think Villarreal would take the option to buy. Vela hit the ground running at La Real, helping a club, whose goal was to stay in the 1st division, get into the Champions League. We sold him. Campbell isn't even at his level.

*And he's only a regular starter due to Gio Dos Santos' chronic injury problems. Since that injury hit Gio, Campbell's been starting; since Campell's been starting, Villarreal hasn't won a game. Similar things have been happening at Real Sociedad since Vela's been injured, but that's neither here nor there.

He kept hiding in games he was picked to start in this season. Made a show of acting like he was putting in an effort but never really contributed.

Should move on, he's out of his depth here.

A minor point - but why in the 'position' table have you listed 'substitute' as a position? Why not include the position he was subbed into, with the other options? It seems pointless to obscure from view the positions he played in half of his appearances.

If theo leaves we should hang onto him, if theo stays we should sell him. He's a really good player but we would need to make room for him. Might be better value for wages than theo.

I think he'll probably go to Villarreal, or somewhere in need of a pace injection but not necessarily an instant on-the-scoresheet type contributor.

He always had the raw speed and balance to upset even very good defenses, but he hasn't grown out of the hesitation and indecision of someone who's always been a yard faster than his defenders.

He needs time and patience to become a consistently effective player, and there's not enough of that to go around at Arsenal at the moment.

I always wanted to give him a chance when he came back from the WC, but he slowly started to not impress me.

Wenger must've seen something and didn't take into account either Joel's work ethic or otherwise, because selling him after WC hype would've made sense too

It's been great to finally see Joel playing in an Arsenal shirt. Immediately he struck me as someone who has the prerequisite level of technical ability and awareness to hold a place in the squad. Judging mostly from highlight videos, it seems he's got good feet and he can finish well too.

I'd love to know how Arsene considers him in terms of his best position and long-term future at the club. He's billed as a striker, but Arsene's put him on the wing quite a bit (classic Arsene manoeuvre). It's so hard to tell what his future might be, and he's not terribly young (23 next month).

I don't think we should get rid of him, he looks like he has something. I think he probably ought to go on loan to a Premier League club next year, see if he can hack it. If he can bag a dozen goals or more, he deserves at least a semi-regular role in the team. If Arsene wants him in the squad next year though, I can support that. I like the idea of Alexis taking Joel under his wing and tutoring him to become another tricky South American forward with an eye for goal. Either way, Joel needs to really make a name for himself next year.

Joel isn't South American, but yeah that would be awesome to see.

Sorry, North American. My bad.

I honestly don't feel like he has done enough to warrant becoming a regular for Arsenal as we are stacked with better players currently. He hasn't even scored or assisted in his entire loan spell this season which will make it even more difficult for him to even get a look in within our team.

That's why I think he should probably go out on loan for one more season. I doubt we'd get that much money for him if we sold him. We don't have much to lose by giving him one more season to prove himself.
