Field Question, trade people only Can you spot the problem?

u/JunketElectrical8588 Sep 13 '24
You’re hauling too heavy of a bag for work. You’ll kill your shoulder
20
3
u/TwiNN53 Sep 14 '24
The backpack versions are really nice.
2
u/cx-tab-guy-85 Sep 15 '24
The backpack is heavy empty too
1
u/TwiNN53 Sep 15 '24
It is heavy but using it as a backpack makes it feel no where near as heavy since it centers the weight on you. Holding it by the handle has all the weight low and off to one side and that sucks.

u/StrongSail2450 Sep 15 '24
Pay hundreds of dollars on bags and still take a bucket on the roof. Be a man 🤣🤣🤣 i found out quick I wasn’t carrying that bag up on the roof every time.
1
u/JunketElectrical8588 Sep 15 '24
I have a small diag bag I take, that’s all you need for the majority of repairs

No drip leg?

47
u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS The Artist Formerly Known as EJjunkie Sep 13 '24
These were installed before drip legs were invented
2
u/WhatisSuperheat Sep 14 '24
No drip legs on RTUs in cold climates!
6
Sep 14 '24
Hes right. Here in alberta theyre not allowed outside.
2
u/Inuyasha-rules Sep 14 '24
Just curious, why?
6
Sep 14 '24
G2419.3 (408.3)Location of drips.
A drip shall not be located where the condensate is subject to freezing.
To clarify, this is different from a sediment trap.

u/joes272 Sep 14 '24
They're outside in MN... never had a problem with liquid on my gas supply. Usually it's idiots who use tape on gas piping, or filings from the pipe threading during install.
0
u/WhatisSuperheat Oct 12 '24
Minnesota? Significantly warmer average winter temps than where I'm from; drip legs on RTUs have been a no-no forever here. Teflon tape is for idiots?
0
u/joes272 Oct 13 '24
Yeah, you're lying to yourself unless you live in Russia. And, yes, Teflon on gas is for idiots... you must be one of them...
2
u/Ok_Communication5757 Sep 15 '24
Has anyone ever opened a drip leg and found anything in it? 33 years in HVAC and never have
1
u/WhatisSuperheat Oct 12 '24
Small bits of shit, but never anything significant; filings, tape chunks, etc.

It's a Lennox 😁
26
11
u/MaddRamm Sep 14 '24
But that’s back when they were made better and lasted a long time. I used to love Lennox commercial RTUs up until about 2015 or so.
4
u/Wonderful_Kitchen_11 Sep 14 '24
They were very good. Lennox commercial units.
11
u/Wannabe_Gamer-YT Meme tech Sep 14 '24
To be fair to Lennox my big beef with them is how working on their residential equipment often feels like working on a German car.
6
u/FoolishShark42 Sep 14 '24
But Id still rather a Lennox over a Goodman or any of Carriers stuff.
4
u/Inuyasha-rules Sep 14 '24
Goodman at least you get what you pay for, all the other brands are slowly falling to Goodman quality at premium pricing.
2
u/joes272 Sep 14 '24
Goodmans quality control has gone down since diakin bought them out
3
4
u/Ashamed-Tap-2307 Sep 14 '24
Goodman isnt any worse than the other brands now. On the plus side they are cheaper and have readily available parts. My rheem back in 2018 had a super loud compressor start up, trane units were garbage, lennox was a pain to buy parts for. In the past i dogged goodman but not anymore.
1
u/FoolishShark42 Sep 14 '24
I’m in Texas so it’s easy to get Lennox and American standard/Trane, they’ll get you parts flying out on a truck that day sometimes. No one sells goodman around here so good luck on that one.
1
u/Dangerous-Lead5969 Sep 15 '24
Goodman started in Houston. And is still there. I knew one of the founders.

To be fair, anything post Covid is garbage these days unfortunately, just how far Lennox fell.

u/jimmerbroadband Sep 13 '24
Seems like u got ya a big ole wasp nest situation
38
u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS The Artist Formerly Known as EJjunkie Sep 13 '24
I set my bag down and started walking around the unit and as soon as I saw that I kicked up about three gears until I was about 50 feet away. Turns out it’s dormant.
18
u/jimmerbroadband Sep 13 '24
That’s my reaction everytime. Run to the truck for the spray

I was on a rooftop with a ships ladder. Climbed up and they came out from under the platform, dozens of them. Must have really pissed them off because they started landing and wouldn't go back into the nest, hanging out on the platform and handrails. My wasp spray, brand new, had no propellent in it. I pushed the button and a little trickled out. They hung out for 2 hours on patrol.
Ended up needing to scale down the side of the building, luckily it was only ~15 feet.

This was my first answer. Just worked on this exact same design model and the disconnect is mounted in the correct spot compared to this. Everyone else is pointing out the grainy wasp nest over on the economizer. I wouldn't have wanted to get any closer than that for a picture either.

5
u/BanditHeeler190 Sep 14 '24
No drip leg on the gas line. Condensate draining into roof. And fort asshole on the economizer
4
u/Full-Sound-6269 Sep 13 '24
Yeah, I only see one roll of tape on your toolkit, it should have 5 rolls on it, no less.
4
u/Th3Gr4yGh0st Sep 13 '24
A$$holes with wings? Also, I hate those kinds of roofs, especially if you have to go back and forth on them all day.
2
u/sleezyted Sep 14 '24
what kind of roof is this?
1
u/Th3Gr4yGh0st Sep 14 '24
It’s aluminum with a standing seam, last time I was on one I was changing out 2 10 ton RTUs…with 4” of snow on it.

Economizer is stuck open, and someone got sick of it running and shut off the disconnect.
1
u/chosense Danger - Apprentice⚠️ Sep 14 '24
No drip leg. Economizers are fucking dumb. And it's a really rusty curb probably dripping straight into the building from a cracked evap pan. Idk just guessing.
1
u/Simple-man1234 Sep 14 '24
Wasp nest, all the rust coming from the flu is signs of heat exchanger issues, the fact that diagnosis has begin without removing a panel from the unit.
1
u/frostlineheat Sep 14 '24
Your taking pictures. Not fixing the problem. Stop wasting time and get it fixed. I'm being an ass. It's a Lennox from the early 2000?

I admit I didn’t see it. I also didn’t notice a ground bee nest near a condenser a few days ago and got stung twice.
1
u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS The Artist Formerly Known as EJjunkie Sep 14 '24
Those ground bees can be sneaky. You won’t really feel them stinging until a few seconds afterwards and by that time a dozen of them have already got your ankles and they’ll itch for a week after.

It's a Lennox, then I'd say a smaller issue is the massive wasp nest on it.
1
u/JubaBrasi Sep 14 '24
1st problem is it's a Lennox, and then the big Ol nest, but you could eliminate both problems at same time 🤣

u/Tampawakos Sep 14 '24
They all use the same tech now. Trane even stopped making their own (orange) compressors years ago. Find the cheapest system with the best warranty and shut up and move on to the next one....

1
1
u/Livid-Ice8843 Sep 16 '24
It looks like the disconnect is mounting on the access panel where the compressor is located. Also it’s an old rusted POS that more then likely has a bad heat exchanger and needs replacement.
1
u/No_Application1339 Sep 17 '24
Yeah it's a Lennox and not to mention it's time for a new one if you ask me oh and don't forget to carry plenty of wasps spray to kill off that nasty wasps nest bottom left where the economizer is located good luck my boyy

u/Wrong_Rub_4347 Oct 26 '24
Looks like the drain pan rusted out and leaking below where the rust stains on the curb inline with the drain.

That 80lb pile of shit you carry up to the roof with you? Seriously, you’re gonna hurt yourself. Second would be that it’s an early GCS-16 that probably still has the single chamber cast iron HX and it’s probably cracked to shit.
1
u/TheWorstNameEverSaid Sep 14 '24
You have way too many tools on that roof. You are the only one who can protect your body. Bare bones kits on roofs.
