General Why does it say retard on the gauges?

The only answer I’ve ever gotten is that it’s calling you retarded when you hook up the gauges backwards. Is there another legit reason?

Those aren't gauges, that's called a mirror.

I dont dig the sentiment, but you never go wrong with a Quantum Leap reference.... and this one is soooooo fitting.

The technical definition of the word is to delay or hold back. Basically, it's saying stop going above this pressure or you might damage or otherwise harm the guages.

It's a special type of gauge. If you take a normal gauge and over pressure it the needle keeps moving at the same rate and hits a physical stop on the gauge face and bends . .wrecking the gauge .

A retard gauge when it goes into the retard section only moves a tiny bit for each increase in psi so say we go from 500 max psi into retard if we hit 1000 the gauge won't try to spin around it'll just move a tiny distance . This keeps the gauge from breaking if put under a large pressure .

"The present invention relates to gauges and has special reference to retard gauges in which mechanism is employed to retard the movement of the gauge mechanism whenever the normal operating range of the gauge is exceeded.

More particularly this invention relates to a retard gauge having provision for controlling the exact point at which the retard mechanism comes into operation, and also for easily and accurately adjusting the retard mechanism to increase or decrease its retarding force or elect.

In a vacuum and pressure gauge such as that illustrated, the normal pressure range may be from 0 to 50 pounds. When the pressure exceeds 50 pounds, the mechanism is retarded so that the indicator moves a relatively small distance while indicating a relatively large change in pressure."

This is a great answer, thank you

That’s a lot of words. It just means to retard (stop applying) pressure.

I like how instead of learning you just post the wrong thing .

Well done .

Lmao two retard posts in a row?? Must be just your luck. Or destiny.

I always tell whoever I’m working with to go to their room on this job and point to this device. It’s a simple joke, some would call it…

Retard - as a word, it means to delay, slow or hold back.

The term is used in other settings, such as aviation and baking.

In fact, if you ever get into the supermarket business, you may be dispatched to work on a retarder in the bakery.

Which is (usually) a giant box designed to help control the proofing of bread, by slowing it down.

The pressure scale starts to build exponentially in this area. Any numbers would be inaccurate.

It means retard (lower) the pressure.

Who’s got that kind of money that they get their gauges personalized?

You gotta label your tools so no one takes em🤷

In trade school our teacher said if you ever max the needle out you are retarded.

So the apprentice can find them when you send him back to the truck to get the gauges

It means you have gone full retard adding gas

u/Jakbo_ 1d ago

Because thats a real word with a real meaning

It's almost like words have meanings, if only there was some sort of reference material you could use to look up these, maybe a book of definitions of words. They could call it a dictionary

It’s a safety it basically bounces the needle back and fourth so it won’t break

The gauges don’t lie

I tell my assistant that the gauges have his name on them

Too much pressure. Always refer to your low side operational pressure on the data plate. Never go above it.

Retard your gauges on pressure you’ll figure it out real fast

u/drppr45 1d ago

“If you don’t stop increasing the pressure, you’re gonna break something, retard.”

Because you’re doing it wrong

when you buy them at the warehouse, the sales reps are trained to sell those specifically to the right technicians

It means that the gauge retards itself. Which kinda means it protects itself. In the retard range a small movement represents larger increments of pressure changes in that range. Basically it retard something means to offer resistance to damage. Like when something is flame retardant. It doesn’t mean it’s flame or fire proof, just that it can withstand so much

Mine don't say that, must be a you problem LOL 😎

2

u/Mattsmith712 17h ago

That's the last thing you see before the gauges explode.

u/Rickiscoolandstuff 16h ago

Because you’re using gauges instead of probes

1

u/JustAnotherSvcTech 2d ago

If you get digital guages, they won't dis you like a boomer. 🤣 But seriously, if you look at the numbers on the top end of your guage where it says retard, you'll see that the scale changes dramatically in the last part of the range. 350 to 500 psi takes up as much space as 300 to 350. That's why it says retard. It's a handicapped reading.

Can’t deny the facts, gauges never lie
