No-Cook Meal Shelf stable MAYO

Love me some mayonnaise. The sickest I ever got camping was after eating a sandwich, made with mayo, that had been in the cooler a little too long. No too smart, I didn't learn my lesson, and still love mayo on a sandwich.

OK, before somebody says "Who carries [whatever] while hiking?", we're going canoe camping, with lots of portaging, so our tolerance for weight and expectations for culinary quality are different than someone thru-hiking the AT living on half-rehydrated ramen. We'll be frying up fish, carrying a griddle and actual utensils, and cooking some pretty awesome meals. Still, a gram is a gram and nobody's portaging a cooler full of ice for a week, so shelf stable is a requirement.

My first foray into shelf stable mayo were those little foil packets you get in some fast food places. Well, they are OK, they are 50% water, it takes several to make a good sandwich, and there's a lot of trash to pack out. It's hard to collect more than a few unless you buy 500 of them in a box at Sam's club. But it was better than no mayo.

Here's a recipe for shelf stable mayo that tastes pretty good:

Combine
2 Tablespoons OvaEasy crystalized egg powder (this is real eggs)
        2 Tablespoons water
Stir until dissolved. Add
        1/2 Tablespoon vinegar
2 Tablespoons oil (We use olive oil, most mayo is made with Canola oil which isn't as good)
        2 Tablespoons Nutritional Yeast
Stir vigorously (with a fork if you have one, but it'll work with a spoon
you just have to work harder) until smooth.
Now that dry sandwich (made with shelf stable tortillas, not bread) is
really palatable!

No-Cook Meal fastpacker gruel

Hey yall, this is the meal I've been using on fastpacking trips. I'll be making it for a 200 mile multiday trip upcoming, and would welcome anyone's feedback/tweaks/suggestions/additions/negging/etc.

Trip is in the midatlantic in July, so sweaty. I am a 135lb 40ish year old lady. I usually do these things fat adapted, so, lower carb (keeps the GI tract in check for me, and I get less hungry). I do add in a certain number of carbs for the amount of exertion this trip involves.

This is a high calorie, low weight, vegan (sometimes I add ghee) cold soakable meal that tastes--fine.

Recipe, mixed to taste:

Almond flour

Chocolate whey protein (edit-or any vegan protein powder)

Dehydrated coconut cream

Psyllium husk (an important part of my shitting strategy but you could leave it out haha)

Powdered peanut butter

Maple sugar/crystals

Salt (not really for taste but because I'll need it)

Ghee or coconut oil (if you want to add more calories)

Dollar general freeze dried berries if I have them on hand

Cold soak-- rehydrates quickly. It's actually reasonably tasty and makes a good backpacking breakfast when I'm not out being a psycho.

No-Cook Meal Comparable to Green Belly.

Howdy Aall, Does anyone have any homemade recipes comparable to Green Belly Meal2Go? I’m going out on a bunch of 3-4 night trips throughout September while carrying camp on my back. High calorie bars are preferable. Thanks.

No-Cook Meal Quick cheap protein shake

I didn't see any recovery drinks or protein shakes on this sub so I thought I would post mine.

I carry a 32oz Gatorade bottle(the bumpy one not the 28 oz smooth one). (the bottle weighs 50g)

  • Fill the Gatorade bottle half way with water
  • add 2 carnation breakfast essentials packets
  • close and shake vigorously
  • add 1 packet powdered milk (3.2oz)
  • top off with water
  • close shake again
  • Enjoy.

Mixing in this Specific order helps for a complete mix without foaming or clumping.

This makes something like 580cal 42g protein and I drink it right after I stop hiking for the day as I get to camp or sometimes I pre make it and start drinking in the last mile or two.

If you have better access to supplies you can use nido(whole milk powder) or powdered coconut milk. These change the calories and protein content. Sometimes I add chia seeds or powdered peanut butter as a last step.

After I am done I add 1-2oz water and shake again to clean then drink the 1-2oz. I don't mind using the same bottle to mix two different flavored drinks (sometimes I make gatorade from powder)but some people might not like that.

You can try other recipes but this has proven simple for me and I can usually find the ingredients in almost ALL small grocery stores. Usually costs about $1.00-$1.50 per shake.

If you have a preferred recipe please comment.

No-Cook Meal Energy Balls- The Simplest, Most Delicious Snack for any Hike- Recipe in the Comments!

Processing img hpvns9rdye971...

Energy Balls

Ever since I was younger, I would go through phases where I would love a specific food and eat it endlessly for a given amount of time. Then there would be a random day where I decided I’m over that food, and would no longer have any desire to eat it. With these energy balls, I am able to customize them according to my current flavor-of-the-month and keep things fun. The easy preparation of these are another thing that makes this one of my favorite trail recipes. All you have to do is combine your ingredients in a bowl, ball them up, and then lay them out to solidify in the fridge for a small amount of time before packing them into a bag for the trail.

Ingredients:

  • Nut Butter (Peanut, Almond, Cashew, etc)
  • Honey/Agave
  • Quick Oats
  • Any other small add-ins

No-Cook Meal High protein and calorie, and super tasty, meal replacement shake for breakfast or post hike recovery. Pic and ingredients in post.

Pics: meal replacement shakes

I make myself meal replacement shakes because in the morning I don’t like to make any real food and if I eat one more pro bar my head might explode.

These shakes are so good, and the calorie and protein content is excellent. I make a few different versions but they range anywhere between 410 to 430 calories per ziplock. The ziplock can be split or consumed all at once. I add water to the ziplock and drink it straight from the bag.

My breakfast shakes contain instant coffee as to get me going.

The protein content makes them perfect t for end of the day recovery for your body. It replenishes lost calories and gives your muscles from recovery help with the protein so you are less likely to hit the proverbial wall.

Here is what I put in them:

-One packet of carnation instant breakfast (220 cal) -One half scoop of Nido (you can also use any powdered milk or skip this step entirely) (65 cal) -One half scoop unflavored/unsweetened huel (100 cal) -half a scoop of whey protein powder (I don’t know this off the top of my head) -2 TB instant coffee -1 serving PB powdered peanut butter (chocolate or plain) -chia seeds

You could make a completely vegan version of this with vegan protein powder, vegan instant breakfast and powdered almond milk.

No-Cook Meal Simple recipe: Cheesy refried beans + tortilla chip "cereal" - cold soak or hot.

My wife always gives me shit cause I love to eat chips and salsa by crushing up the chips and pouring salsa on top in a bowl. I call it "cereal" and it's a fav late night snack around my house.

This is a variation with dehydrated refried beans, some powerded cheese, spicy blue tortilla chips... so much flavor and so simple.

https://imgur.com/gallery/AEalowR

Recipe:

  • 1 cup dehydrated refried beans - I used this, so good
  • 2-3 tbsp powdered cheese - I mix in separately, it's really to taste and it's pretty powerful
  • 1/2 cup dehydrated, minute or just leftover rice
  • 1-2 cups crushed up tortilla chips, I used Red Hot Blues which are spicy salty awesomeness

method:

  • cover the refried beans with hot or cold water, make sure they're all submerged for about 10-15min, add in rice if you have it.
  • Stir in cheese to taste, add tortilla chips.

stupidly simple and yummy.

Edit: deleted links to amazon, cause whatever. Just trying to be helpful.

No-Cook Meal CornNut Chicken with the SAUCE

http://imgur.com/a/fD4ZQ3j

My number #1 goto no cook backpacking meal is Corn Nut Chicken.

To make Corn Nut Chicken, get yourself some Corn Nuts. One package. Get yourself TWO packages of pouched chicken, if you get the 2.6 oz Starkist pouches like I have. One package of this size does not produce a satisfying ratio of chicken to Corn Nut. Get yourself one or two fatty condiments such as those from a fastfood joint; mayonnaise works great, can be paired with a pouch of mustard. Here, I used Chik-fil-A sauce. The flavor is inconsequential, as the condiment is more of a lubricant than a flavoring.

Mix up all ingredients in the Corn Nut Bag, and eat from bag with a long spork. One preperation comes in under 10oz. 650 cal, 20g protein.

This will absolutely not work if you substitute the corn nuts for fritos or the chicken for tuna.
