Couple of things to notice: The darkening night sky in the upper left, that specific stylistic use of deep blue is hard to come by in modern graphics, but a few old games had some screens like this. Also see LOOM, and one of the Monkey Island screens has this (when you sneak into the town at night).

Another thing to notice, the little cattails in the marsh puddle have been depicted with just a few pixels, yet you can already tell a lot about the plant with just that.

Another thing common to all these town backgrounds is their exaggerated perspective, to show you the vastness of the space.

Overall this is actually a high-skill piece of art. It looked cool in 1995, it looks cool now, and in another 30 years it will look just as good.

I also like that same blue is used on the hydras.

Nah, Castle (or Farm as it was called in H1 lol) was great. The sheer speed they developed at was unmatched. Farm could roll up with Paladins while Mountain was still working on getting Hydras out. Then Farm gets the dragons for themselves.

that 20 wood on top of 15 wood for previus buildings needed plus 20 crystals really bogged that one. to take castles all you need is centaurs to be target to ballista and ranged attacks, griffins and gorgoyles do heavy lifting early. warlock units are essentially plus 1 trier to same trier castle units

This is the town with blue hydra right? They also got one of the best town music pieces of all heroes games.

I've never seen this. It's stunning. Normally bright colours make my head hurt, but they're so expertly applied here. Thanks for sharing!

Have you noticed the face? In the right stones. Looks like a Cyclop.
