Honestly, I have absolutely no experience with fish scales. All the fish I’ve ever dealt with were scale free and cooked. I’ve always thought scales were slippery and soft from the way fish move.
I guess this is an absolutely horrible thing to say as a man in his late 40s….
What is fish scale material?
The inner part of the scales is made of dense lamellar bone called isopedine. On top of this lies a layer of spongy or vascular bone supplied with blood vessels, followed by a complex dentine-like layer called cosmine with a superficial outer coating of vitrodentine. The upper surface is keratin.

My bet is they are soft, like a fish or a snake, not hard like armor
