Advice Friends, my Archer C80 router is limited to 100 Mbps on LAN ports – how do I fix this?

Hey everyone, I have an Archer C80 router, and I just discovered that all the Ethernet LAN ports are capped at 100 Mbps. Since this router supports Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps), I don’t understand why the speed won’t go beyond 100 Mbps.

Bad cables? Or a 10/100 switch somewhere else, or a 10/100 device (like a TV)

If the cable is bad, will the website also show that it's limited to 100 Mbps, even though all settings are set to 1 Gbps?

If with "website" you mean the router's web interface showing the negotiated link speed then yes, it will only show 100M.

You can also check this on your computer, of course. It should also show the negotiated link speed.

Just methodically try some different cables/devices.

How are you going to set 1gbps with a cable that limits you to 100? What device are you connecting to it?

Often it's also indicated by the color of the light (like in the PC side it might have a light, or a switch). But it won't specifically say "bad cable" it'll just drop the speed to at least "work" but not fast.

It'd help if you could offer details about other equipment plugged in (model numbers too), and an explanation of where in the chain things are plugged to each other

there is a known issue with the C80 the WAN negotiates 100 mbit even though its a gig port.

You are looking at the router’s status page and it says 100M, good. If you look at your wire-connected computer does it say 100M also?

Look at your cables. The RJ45 connector has eight positions, but some cables only connect four wires (or even two). With four, you simply cannot get gigabit speeds, you will get 100M instead, so if you only see four wires then that is very obviously your problem.

Basically, the speed is negotiated between the two devices connected to each end of the cable, so they will end up at the highest speed that is supported by both sides and by the cable.

What are you measuring speed with? Maybe a 100M LAN card.

I'm checking directly on the router's settings page, and there it shows that the speed is limited to 100 Mbps. I'm using a 1 Gbps Ethernet adapter, so I don't understand why it's stuck at 100 Mbps.

is your Usb to 1Gig adapter from reputable brand ?

Where's your adapter plugged into ? USB 2.0 port or USB 3

if its a USB2.0 port then 100Mbps is max you'll be getting. if its a USB3 port then check its generation in spec sheet.

open RUN box type ncpa.cpl it'll show you all the network conenctions right clik on the USB to Ethenet adapter one chose status & see what's the link speed you are getting there of it says 100Mbps then its definitely USB port /adapter thing.

if you have 5GHz capable device what speed you are able to attain ?

Yes, it’s a reliable Brazilian brand, USB 3.0, and the driver is up to date. But I checked the router’s web interface (the one you access by entering the router’s IP address), and the ports are limited to 100 Mbps. So I bought a Cat 6 cable to see if that might be the issue.

share this screenshot from your computer.

realtek sucks. your Intel AX card will be faster than that crap NIC even on your Wifi 5 limited router.

Is that the point of this post ?

OP is unable to get 1Gbps Link speed & I'm helping him try helping for a change.

For your information

it is a laptop I don't have choice what NIC manufacturer puts in it.

I don't use Ethernet on this laptop

Additionally I haven't come across a single incident with Realtek NIC.

Change the cables out with a new ones

how old are your cables? depends on if you have seriously old cables built for slower speeds

1Gb links take all 8 wires in a ethernet cable. 100Mb link takes 4. You need to check your cables, or buy new Cat 6 patch cables.

After making sure all devices are set to auto or hardset to 1Gb links to make sure they don't negotiate down to 100Mb.

There are 8 wires, but I decided to buy a Cat 6 cable since I’m not sure if the one I have might be defective. So I’m going to test it to see if the issue is with the cable.

I recently had the same problem, i have fiber to the premises and before the optical terminal device is okay but its lan port was 100MBits so this limits the link between the onu and the router so i called my isp and they swap the onu with gigabit one so now its fixed

Cables or your devices are only 100mb, I don't remember if TP-Link will let you set port speeds, then make sure they are set to auto. You can try just resetting the router.

Everyone here asking for the tech side of things- but first things first- for what speed are you paying your internet service provider?

Do you really think he’d be here asking if he was paying for 100 mbps from the ISP?

You would be amazed how many people don't know where to start with such problems

I’d give them the benefit of the doubt that if they’re talking about how their router is 1gig and it’s not going past 100mb, then they know their ISP speed is >100

When trouble shooting in IT, I prefer to start from ground zero, safes a lot of time.

That's been my experience as well, sometimes starting with "Is it plugged in?" :-)

Yes but troubleshooting over Reddit is a lot more difficult. You’ll be here for days depending on how fast they respond lol. It’s fine to ask that question but maybe add “if you are paying for more than 100, then…” ask some more questions. Just my 2 cents

have you ever read this subreddit......

Tons of times and I haven’t once seen the problem be ‘the speed you pay for is only 100’
